Break Out of Jail This Summer With ‘The Raid 2’ on Blu-ray!

The Raid 2 TNJuly 8th just became very special to me today for two reasons now.  First, it’s my dog’s 13th birthday.  She’s getting old (sad face).  And second, with two fists pumping in the air screaming hell yeah…The Raid 2 comes out on Blu-ray that day from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.  After the bad experience I had seeing this film at the Alamo Drafthouse, which I vow to never go to again for a first time movie, I finally get to see The Raid 2 in all its glory uninterrupted at home without servers standing in my way while I am trying to read subtitles or drunk people stumbling over feet because they serve beer while you watch a feature length film.  How ridiculous.  Give me a nice Cinemark theater any day.  LOL.  However, I digress.  Wanna know more and what you can expect from this July 8th Blu-ray release?  Sony has you covered below.  Venture on! I, Frankenstein (Blu-ray Review)

I Frankenstein - www.whysoblu.comFrom the producers and creators of the Underworld franchise comes the next step in monster evolution: I, Frankenstein. I missed this one at the show but was looking forward to the Blu-ray just for the fact that it’s been severely bashed since those first awful looking trailers debuted months ago. I usually don’t judge a film by a trailer until I have actually seen the film for myself. I am also not familiar with the graphic novel series it’s based off of, so my levels of familiarity the world of I, Frankenstein is limited. Let us see how the end product fared.   Continue reading ‘I, Frankenstein (Blu-ray Review)’

The ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Have A New Full Trailer Out, You’re Welcome

guardians thumbFor those either still on the fence or excited enough to want to see more and more footage leading up to the cinematic debut of what is sure to be everyone’s favorite raccoon and a bunch of other chumps, here is a brand new trailer for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.  Naturally, this trailer explains a bit more beyond who the hell the Guardians of the Galaxy are made up of, with more emphasis on the plot of the film and world that these characters inhabit.  Given the weirdness of it all and the involvement of writer/director James Gunn, along with the rest of this cast, I continue to be excited about what could come from a movie like this, especially since it’s a Marvel film straying far from the norm.  Guardians of the Galaxy opens August 1st, continue on to watch the new trailer, see the new poster, and see a number of images from the film.

Anchor Bay & Scream Factory Team For HALLOWEEN THE COMPLETE COLLECTION On Blu-ray Sept 23!!!

Michael Myers thumbI think its to no surprise that I’m a massive MASSIVE fan of the Halloween franchise.  If you read my blog, last October I did 31 straight days of Halloween material in celebration of the original’s 35th anniversary entitled “31 Days Of Halloween”.  For years and years fans have clamored for a complete box set of the films.  And I always told them it was pretty much impossible.  There were WAY too many studios that held rights to different sequels.  Anchor Bay had 1,4,5 Universal had 2,3 Disney/Miramax had 6-8, Weinstein had Zombie’s remake and Sony had Rob’s second outing.  Somehow, some way, some MASTERWORK has led to some sublicensing GENIUS and collaboration between Anchor Bay and Scream Factory and they’ve combined forces to release the full set.  This might be the most exciting thing Anchor Bay has done in like 10 years.  This is incredible.  And to top it off…the friggin’ PRODUCER’S CUT of Halloween: The Curse Of Michael Myers is FINALLY coming!  Holy crap!  I am beyond excited to be once again owning these films for like the 12th or 13th time!  CANNOT WAIT til September!  Bravo! Weekend At Bernie’s (Blu-ray Review)

Weekend At Bernies - www.whysoblu.comHilarious performances by Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman make this comedy a “good old, knockdown slapstick” (The Hollywood Reporter)! It sounded like a great weekend away at their boss Bernie’s beachside pleasure palace. But when working stiffs Richard and Larry (McCarthy and Silverman) arrive to find a real stiff – their murdered boss – they’re forced to concoct a crazy scheme to avoid being implicated and/or dead themselves! With Bernie propped up and his death effectively covered up, Richard and Larry’s weekend escape becomes exactly that, as they dodge curious babes, a curtain of bullets and one confused hit man!

Grand Piano (Blu-ray Review)

Grand-PianoIt’s funny how film genres, trends, styles and such tend to come and go.  A film like Grand Piano would have possibly or even likely been an A-List title in the 90s.  It definitely would have been tops in the Hitchcock era of thrillers as well.  Now, this high concept thriller film is best suited to be a festival darling with limited theatrical release and its big wide viewing coming in the Video OnDemand format.  For someone like me who still loves this type of film, its sort of bittersweet.  I’d like more options like this in the theater, BUT this type of material is only enhancing the VOD new release catalog and making that option more of a force to be reckoned with.  Times are changing, and films like Grand Piano are making sure we pay more attention to and take the VOD market a bit more seriously.  Some of the year’s more interesting stuff is now falling to that avenue. Dan Curtis’ Dracula (Blu-ray Review)

Dan-Curtis-DraculaI’m pretty sure I’d never seen this version of Dracula prior to this review.  A few things seemed familiar to me, but I wasn’t sure if it was this film I was being reminded of, or just that it was the Dracula story that I knew and other similar Dracula films that were in my brain.  Anywho, this televised Dracula classic starring Jack Palance just got a brand new 2K transfer and is coming to your Blu-ray players in the next couple weeks.  The Dan Curtis film was a hit when it aired on CBS back in 1974.  How does it hold up in the sea of many takes on the legendary Count?  How was legendary film actor Jack Palance in the title role?  Come along with me as I take a look at this piece of horror television history in the new edition coming May 27th from MPI Home Video. Journey To The West: Conquering The Demons (Blu-ray Review)

Journey-To-The-WestMagnolia Home Entertainment is releasing the action-packed adventure, Journey To The West, on Blu-ray and DVD on May 27. I was a fan of both Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer, so I was interested to see what Stephen Chow brings to the table this time.  I never saw CJ7 so I really haven’t seen anything from the guy since 2004 with Hustle.  Journey To The West definitely has that same vein that Soccer and Hustle had, but heads off for a bigger, more fantastical, more supernatural adventure this time around.  I had bit of a problem with the CGI in this one, but I think the idea behind and choreography of the fight sequences was impressive enough that the film is able to overcome some lackluster effects. Crack the code with Dom Hemingway on Blu-ray July 22

domEven knowing what this film is based on the trailer I have seen, my gut reaction continues to be, “What the hell is this?”  Jude Law playing a jerk and bringing along Withnail & I‘s Richard E. Grant for the ride seems like it could be a lot of darkly comedic fun, but who knows.  The film also features a neat cast, including Game of Thrones Emilia Clarke and The Bridge‘s Demian Bichir .  I will find out soon enough what to say about this film, as it arrives on Blu-ray on July 22.  Read on to learn more about this upcoming release.

New ‘Interstellar’ Trailer Presents Nolan-Style Wonder

interstellarteaser1-sht-001Easily one of the most anticipated films of the year, Christopher Nolan is following up The Dark Knight Rises with a film that is surely going to wow in some way.  With a fantastic cast that included Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway, and Michael Caine (apparently contracted to Nolan for life), this is a film that is slowly revealing its true nature, but remains ever so intriguing, based on how grounded all the footage seems so far, with only hints at the extraordinary aspects that will surely be revealed in due time.  Continue on to see the new theatrical trailer and poster for this upcoming film, releasing in theaters and IMAX this November.

Martial Arts Movie Marathon (DVD Review)

Martial-Arts-Movie-MarathonI’m a pretty big fan of Shout! Factory’s “Marathon” series they’ve been putting out.  Usually four films with typically a common thread between them.  Its films that maybe wouldn’t be attractive by themselves per se, but when they get lumped together they suddenly make you go “OOOH!  I GOT TO HAVE IT!”  I’m hoping one day they take these talents of Movie Marathons to the realm of Blu-ray, but for now they’re only on DVD.  And, its not four movies crammed on one disc.  No, no, its two discs with two movies on each.  This time we’re getting the first of two (announced so far) Martial Arts marathons scheduled.  This first one’s highlights include plenty of Sammo Hung and the second feature film from legendary Hong Kong action director John Woo. He’s ‘Godzilla’, Hear Him Roar (Movie Review)

godzilla whysoblu thumbIt is great to see a movie like this treated with a level of respect. While Godzilla can be boiled down to a giant monster causing a rampage in a city, the fact that the film (as well as its marketing) has a level of restraint in how to actually depict the sort of chaos that comes with this sort of film territory is impressive. This new Godzilla movie has a lot more in common with a disaster movie than a science fiction/adventure story, but it respects the legacy of the 60-year old franchise. The film is incredibly satisfying in the way it confidently builds up to huge reveals, maintains a level of pacing fitting of the more memorable summer blockbusters, puts a great deal of faith in letting the atmosphere enthrall its audience into the story, and still be a lot of fun to watch. While the human-based drama leaves something to be desired, this is easily the most enjoyable Godzilla film since 1989’s Godzilla vs. Biollante.

Win ‘3 Days To Kill’ on Blu-ray!

Win '3 Days To Kill' on Blu-ray!So tell me.  If a movie is billed like the following, wouldn’t you want a chance at winning a free copy on the Blu-ray format?  “A stellar cast” (Jeffrey Lyons, Lyons Den Radio), including Oscar®winner Kevin Costner*, Oscar® nominee Hailee Steinfeld** and Amber Heard, lead this “undeniably entertaining” (Frank Scheck, The Hollywood Reporter) action-thriller.  Costner plays a daring International spy with lethal skills and a hard-earned reputation for tackling the most dangerous missions imaginable.  But when a seductive CIA operative (Heard) makes him an offer he can’t refuse, he’s forced to juggle his two toughest assignments yet: looking after his rebellious teenage daughter (Steinfeld), while hunting down the world’s most ruthless terrorist.  OF COURSE YOU WOULD! Locke Rides Solo (Movie Review)

locke whysoblu thumbWatching someone attempt to control chaos can be a very exciting thing. Fittingly enough, in recent years, I have now watched two major Batman villains attempt it. Obviously Heath Ledger did his best to wreak havoc on the fictional Gotham City, only to be nearly outdone later by Tom Hardy’s Bane, but now Hardy is attempting to control a far less grandiose form of chaos: the destruction of his own life. Locke is a wonderfully gripping drama about a man attempting to remain calm and coherent in the midst of his entire life falling apart. Set in what amounts to a singular location with only the physical presence of one actor, it is not just control on the part of the character, but the filmmaking in general that makes this film so compelling, despite its minimalist nature.
