Locke Rides Solo (Movie Review)

locke whysoblu thumbWatching someone attempt to control chaos can be a very exciting thing. Fittingly enough, in recent years, I have now watched two major Batman villains attempt it. Obviously Heath Ledger did his best to wreak havoc on the fictional Gotham City, only to be nearly outdone later by Tom Hardy’s Bane, but now Hardy is attempting to control a far less grandiose form of chaos: the destruction of his own life. Locke is a wonderfully gripping drama about a man attempting to remain calm and coherent in the midst of his entire life falling apart. Set in what amounts to a singular location with only the physical presence of one actor, it is not just control on the part of the character, but the filmmaking in general that makes this film so compelling, despite its minimalist nature.

Godzilla’s Bark Is Worse Than Its Bite (Movie Review)

Godzilla 2014 Movie ReviewIf you were asked where would Hollywood be without another reboot of the famous Japanese film monster, Godzilla, how would you answer?  I guess if someone asked me that, my initial response would be probably making another attempt at Freddy Krueger.  But since things didn’t fair all too well for the slasher’s last go around, I would gladly have Godzilla back any day, that is until they reimagine Michael Myers.  However, as usual, I digress.  Strolling into this past Monday night’s press screening, despite the few negative reviews I had read, I was actually looking forward to seeing the big green guy stomping around like nobody’s business on the giant IMAX screen.  After all, American audiences haven’t had any Godzilla sightings since Roland Emmerich’s take in 1998.  Wouldn’t you say it’s kind of about time to welcome back our monstrous friend?  I think so!  I’m a big fan of the recent collaborations between Legendary Pictures (minus Jack the Giant Slayer) and Warner Bros. so why not?  Let the good times…um…smash! Celebrate the best “Spaghetti Westerns” with The Man With No Name Trilogy on Blu-ray June 3

eastwood_good_ugly-001We have seen Sergio Leone’s masterful western trilogy – The Man with No Name Trilogy – release on Blu-ray a few times and in separate forms, but now we have a new upcoming release largely centered around the new remastered edition of The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.  While the features may largely be the same, a new transfer for one of the best westerns of all time is a good enough reason to get excited, as films like Robocop and The Terminator, among others, have certainly been done proper justice with their new remasters, as of late.  Continue on to learn more about this upcoming release.

Bippity Boppity Boom: Live-Action CINDERELLA Teaser

Cin_Tsr_1-Sht_v2_lg-001I honestly forgot this was a thing, but director Kenneth Branagh continues to explore blockbuster filmmaking with a live-action feature inspired by the classic fairy tale, “Cinderella”.  It will bring to life the timeless images from Disney’s 1950 animated masterpiece as fully-realized characters in a visually dazzling spectacle for a whole new generation, Disney hopes.  There is now a teaser poster and teaser trailer to accompany this upcoming March 2015 release, along with some basic information about what will occur in this film.  The plot is no surprise, but the film does star Cate Blanchett and Lily James, among others.  Continue to on to find out more.

Transformers 4 Gets A New Trailer, Poster, And More!

trans4mers dinobots whysobluAs we head closer and closer to what I am sure Michael “Boom Boom” Bay refers to as T-Day, more and more marketing materials are going to pop up to get people excited for yet another giant F-ing robots movie.  It is almost like we haven’t had much of a break, given the arrival of Pacific Rim last year, let alone Hugh Jackman’s father-son rock ’em sock ’em robot sports drama Real Steel from a few years back, but Transformers: Age of Extinction is sure to be a pretty big event, given that Transformers films tend to be just that.  The addition of Mark Wahlberg and Dinobots only seems to make things more of…well, something.  Anyway, continue on to see the newest trailer for the film, some new pics, and a final theatrical poster. About Last Night (Blu-ray Review)

About Last Night (2014) BluRay LabelSomething that I notice does not get enough attention regarding comedies is editing. I am not talking about the pace of a film necessarily, which I see brought up a lot; notably with Judd Apatow-produced comedies lately, which tend to feel a bit shaggy. When I say editing, I am referring more to the structure of scenes and how to create a sense of rhythm that comes from both the delivery of dialogue and actions from the characters involved and the way shots cut back and forth to best achieve a certain level of spark that makes a film click. About Last Night does not rely on much that is new in the realm of romantic comedies, but what it has is great editing that really sells the work done in the script and by the actors to show the chemistry on screen and keep things moving with a near screwball level of zaniness at times and an effectively biting tone at others. As a result, About Last Night easily won me over earlier this year and now I have a review of the Blu-ray to share as well.

‘Million Dollar Arm’ Fouls Out (Movie Review)

million dollar arm whysoblu thumbIt is easy to see the main issue with Million Dollar Arm, as it is all over the poster. I like Jon Hamm, I look forward to seeing what he does, once Mad Men ends and he can really delve into some much better film roles, which he is more than able to handle, but his character is not the interesting part of this story adapted from reality. Still, we follow this sports agent in a film that takes the Disney sports movie formula (which has worked many times before) and applies it to this “Jerry Maguire heads to India” story. Unfortunately, while there are commendable elements, the film has little desire to really delve into the more interesting material involving the two kids with the million dollar arms.

Jake Gyllenhaal Stars In Psychological Thriller ENEMY Arriving On Blu-ray This June

ENEMY_BD_3D-001Here’s a movie that I most regret missing, while it was in theaters.  From everything I have heard, Enemy will likely be a film I end up loving, but I just could not make any of the screening dates, or catch it while it was in theaters or on VOD.  Now I will have the chance, as the film hits Blu-ray on June 24th.  The film reunites Jake Gyllenhaal and Prisoners director Denis Villeneuve in a story about encountering another version of one’s self.  It sounds fascinating and I am exited to finally be able to check it out.  Learn more about this upcoming release in this post.

Crocodile Dundee/Crocodile Dundee II – Double Feature (Blu-ray Review)

Crocodile-DundeeIt’s kind of funny, had this been 1986 and local newsletter mag called Why So VHS and Crocodile Dundee come across the table for review, us writers may have been chomping at the bit and fighting each other for the chance to review the tape.  Instead, its 2014 and the double feature release of not only the first one, but part 2 included as well, comes as sort of an afterthought.  I think it came across as sort of a conceded “sure, I’ll do it”.  And that’s wild for a pair of films that were great big hits when they came out.  The first film was an absolute phenomenon when it came out.  While the box office number on it might make the youth of today shrug, it was massive back in 1986 and made the film sort of a phenomenon with a catch phrase that still gets used today (“That’s not a knife.  THAT’S a knife.).  How would these two films hold up today?  And would I be blinded by any sort of nostalgia viewing them? Napoleon Dynamite – 10th Anniversary Edition (Blu-ray Review)

Napoleon-Dynamite-10-YearIt’s really been ten years since Napoleon Dynamite came out and we all had a Jamiroquai song stuck in our heads?  Ten years since people were quoting and accenting Jon Heder as Napoleon like kids in the 90s were “Yeah, Baby” and quoting Mike Myers’ Austin Powers character?  Dang, ten years ago I was in college with a ton of adventures in life ahead of me.  But, hey, that’s where we are.  Happy 10th birthday, Napoleon Dynamite.  This phenomenon even had a short lived cartoon series on television that regrouped everyone involved in the film a couple years ago.  Fox is celebrating that landmark with a new edition of your famous film.  Well, lets take a look and see how exactly “new” this is.  It does have sweet new liger-skinned packaging though, that’s for sure!
