Just a little over a day since the trailer for this summer’s Guardians Of The Galaxy made waves on the internet and they’re already sending us more. After the jump, I’ve been provided with some clips introducing us to our heroes of the film. This is a pretty brilliant movie on Disney and Marvel’s behalf as this is a much lesser known property that they’ve brought to life. Also at the bottom you’ll see what they’re calling the “teaser” poster for the film. It opens in August and the trailer has already got most of us here at Why So Blu even more excited for the film (Gerard will come around, don’t worry). Today go ahead and meet the Guardians! Welcome to another Thursday of my wish list picks. I’d like to quickly point out that I’m posting these in no sort of preferential or ranking order. I’m merely going off of what I’m feeling about discussing for the week. And of course, it’s a title I think should be put out on the format. I’m also trying to kind of vary my choices when it comes to genre and the like, because I could easily fill this with horror title after horror title. But I want some variety. I hope you’re enjoying this as much as I am. And as always, feel free to leave suggestion of titles you want and I may choose to discuss them in the near future! So, with all that “blah blah” off my chest, let’s hunker own down and get to this week’s pick. Continue reading ‘Brandon’s Blu-ray Wishlist – February 20, 2014′

2013 marked the passing of 50 years since one of the darkest days in American history; the assassination of the 35th President of the United States of America John Fitzgerald Kennedy. In light of this (is it in good taste to call it a “milestone”?) half century of time passage, a film based on the event and leading up to it was put into commission. The film, Killing Kennedy, was aired on The National Geographic Channel back on November 10 and was produced by acclaimed filmmaker Ridley Scott. The film received rather mixed reviews, but garnered star Rob Lowe a Screen Actors Guild award nomination for his portrayal of the fallen President. Now, it’s coming to you on Blu-ray courtesy of 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. Continue reading ‘Killing Kennedy (Blu-ray Review)’

The calendar year of 1996 saw a lot of big feature names get released such as Independence Day, Fargo, Trainspotting, Jerry Maguire, The Rock, Scream, From Dusk till Dawn, Twister, The English Patient, Primal Fear and many more, but perhaps none more transcending for two young actors than the movie we are gathered here to discuss today…a blast from my past…Normal Life. This film may possibly boast the single greatest performances from both Ashley Judd and Luke Perry, but the cold reality of the situation is the fact that it’s also probably their most obscure and least-seen film of their careers. Now that blanket statement doesn’t hold true as it relates to myself, as I consider Normal Life one of my favorite Ashley Judd films of all-time (and Luke Perry for that matter), but I’d be hard pressed to ever talk to anyone that has seen the movie before, even in the reviewer community that I keep myself so actively engaged in. The Wind Rises is a wonderful addition to Studio Ghibli’s impressive library of anime features. With only a hint of fantastical elements, which mainly come in the form of dream sequences, The Wind Rises is really an animated biopic of a man responsible for designing Japanese fighter planes during WWII, but with a fictionalized focus on his personal life. There are numerous themes that the film attempts to explore, but even while it has a sense of melancholy to go with the main character’s own sense of discovery, it stays back from the messy politics of it all. Really, this is a story of a man who had dreams of creating an ideal design and how he balanced his goals with the reality of life.

Baggage Claim has come from a long line of romantic comedies featuring impossibly beautiful women with problems finding love. It is annoying to have to say something like, “take my words with a grain of salt, as this is not my preferred genre,” but it is true. Baggage Claim is definitely a film that is made for an audience that is into these kinds of clichéd romantic comedies, which feature attractive casts and the bare minimum requirements to develop a premise that slightly differs from those that came before it. One can throw the “hypocrite” label at me all they want, when I recommend a horror movie that feels ever so similar to another one and does not do a whole lot new, but what can I say? Some movies just do not work for me, especially when I have examples of similar ones that do. Baggage Claim may work as easy entertainment for some, but there is very little here that had me legitimately enjoying the film.

Written and directed by Ronald Krauss (Amexica), and starring Vanessa Hudgens in “the best performance of her career,” (NYC Movie Guru), the theatrical release Gimme Shelter depicts the story of Agnes “Apple” Bailey (Hudgens) a tough, street-wise teen who flees life with her drug addicted mother to find the wealthy father she’s never known. But when her father’s new prim & proper family find out Apple is pregnant, she is pressured to conform to their expectations and runs away again. Apple must rely on her own survival skills on the streets, until she meets the kindly Father McCarthy who helps direct her to a shelter for pregnant teens. Apple’s unbreakable spirit enables her to fight against the odds to find redemption, and ultimately create a family to finally call her own. Continue on to learn more about this upcoming release.

Chan-wook Park’s Oldboy from 2003 is one of my favorite films of all time. It came highly recommended to me by my good friend John Rocha. He refused to tell me as much as possible about the plot and didn’t want to discuss anything aside from it being “terrific” until I saw it. And when I first saw it, my mind was freakin’ BLOWN (overused term, I know, but how else do you describe it?). It was an incredibly engaged movie that hooks you from the first frame and has you on the edge of your seat trying to piece together and figure it out before the film does. It also had some really cool action, including a memorable one take confined space fight with a hammer. And then, the biggie, the jaw dropping “HOLY SHIT” ending. I immediately knew I would never forget this film. No matter how hard you try, you’ll never forget 2003’s Oldboy. I began immediately forcing the film upon my film buff friends and spreading the good word. Everybody seemed in agreement; Oldboy was a great film and one of the best of the decade. Honestly, when this came out theatrically last year, I wanted nothing to do with it really. Then, surprisingly, mostly positive reviews poured in. I kind of felt like it’s a spoof on the Rocky franchise as well as Raging Bull, two legendary boxing sagas, so that’s kind of why I avoided it. But that’s childish, right? I think so. Oh what the hell. I want to give it a chance! It does have two “legendary” actors in the title role. It has to be good, no? Well thankfully, I don’t have too long to find out due to Warner Bros. press announcement today where they announced an April 8th Blu-ray release date for…Grudge Match. Check out the full press release below for more information! Continue reading ‘Fight It Out With ‘Grudge Match’ on Blu-ray This April!’

Alexander Payne’s Nebraska had been making the rounds in 2013 winning many accolades based on the performance of long time acting veteran Bruce Dern. Come time for the Academy Awards’ picks for the best of 2013, Nebraska proved even moreso winning nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor (Bruce Dern), Best Actress (June Squibb), Best Director (Alexander Payne) and Best Original Screenplay (Bob Nelson). While it may not be a clear frontrunner for any of these awards, these nominations are recognition enough for this terrific little film. And just in time before the awards are handed out, you can check out the film people have been raving about on glorious Blu-ray as it will be release on February 25th (the Oscars take place on March 2nd). After the review, get you copy in time by pre-ordering using the link below! Continue reading ‘Nebraska (Blu-ray Review)’

Thanks Jimmy Kimel? Those are not words I use often, but hey, the man (well technically his show) is responsible for releasing the debut trailer for the upcoming Marvel film, Guardians of the Galaxy. This obscure Marvel comic property is the biggest risk Marvel Studios has taken since basically Iron Man, when Marvel pretty much started making their own movies. ‘Guardians‘ may be a bit of a trickier feat to pull off, given the mixed amount of star power in this cast, the darkly comedic/quirky style of former Troma director James Gunn, and the very premise, which may not be as easy to stomach as Robert Downey Jr. building a metal suit in a grounded reality. All of that said, all of the ingredients in this film have me excited by said risk and the ambition involved. Now we have the first full trailer, which at least does a good job of teasing the tone of the film. We have several months to see the end results, but I am no less excited for this movie. Check out the trailer and some new images from the film by continuing on in this post.

It’s always great when you’re called upon to review a former winner of Best Picture. This time I’ve been tapped to look back on 2002’s Chicago. The film was quite the sensation back in 2002, racking up 6 wins on 13 nominations at the Academy Awards (including Best Supporting Actress for Catherine Zeta-Jones). It didn’t stop there, the film was big with movie-going audiences as it lit up the box office with just under 171 million dollars in the US and over 306 million dollars worldwide. It was even such a significant dent that the Academy Awards celebrated its tenth anniversary with a few tributes to it during the 2013 Oscar ceremony. Lionsgate is reissuing it with the “Diamond Edition” that includes a new, almost two and a half hour, documentary taking a look back at the production and sensation of the 2002 Best Picture winner that was Chicago. I was able to check this one out this past Saturday night before leaving for Cupertino. Admittedly so, I had a pretty good time with it. I was obviously drawn to it by the flick’s cover art (I’m talking the film’s theatrical poster) and promise of what’s inside, but more so because of my involvement with it at AFM a few years back when I was first introduced to the concept. I thought I could easily get on board with this one and rightfully so I was able to. So check it out. Just in today comes an announcement I’m happy to hit you all with…Nurse is coming home to the Blu-ray format on April 8th courtesy of Lionsgate!
