The Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them (or Fantastic Beasts) series of adventures to continue the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, while ducking in to the events prior to the flagship story, hasn’t caught on as the folks behind them probably would have hoped for. The first film was generally received well, but its sequel seemed to fall off for most audiences. The Secrets of Dumbledore is attempt to both right the ship and to tie things up a bit in case the ship is too far underwater to get ashore. Warner Brothers is putting it out on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray with an Atmos track and a nice array of bonus features on June 28th. Time to get hooked on a classics 90s slasher all over again as Sony celebrates the 25th anniversary of the first Scream descendant I Know What You Did Last Summer with its debut on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray on September 27th. This release will rock a brand new transfer and Dolby Atmos track, carry over previous DVD featurettes and boast some new deleted scenes for this release. The release is probably not too big a surprise, as for the last couple years it has appeared on Sony’s survey of “What would you like to see us do on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray?” that they send out annually. Nonetheless, it didn’t make the cut for the Columbia Classics Volume 3 release, but a standalone disc here will do very nicely.
Alex Garland’s unsettling and enigmatic horror film, Men, arrives on Blu-ray™ + DVD + Digital and DVD August 9 from Lionsgate. The gruesome horror film follows a young woman who goes on a solo vacation to the English countryside following the death of her ex-husband. Written and directed by Academy Award® nominee Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation, Never Let Me Go), Men will be available on Blu-ray + DVD + Digital combo and DVD format.

The King is back. Elvis, the sixth feature from the heavy-on-the-spectacle director Baz Luhrmann (The Great Gatsby), is bursting at the seams with all the pageantry and showmanship expected from the Aussie filmmaker. Starring Tom Hanks as Mr. Presley’s shady manager, Colonel Tom Parker, and Austin Butler (Once Upon A Time In Hollywood) in a star-making performance as Mr. Presley himself, Warner Bros.’ big screen stunner might just be the out-of-body experience fans of Elvis have been clamoring for since his tragic death in 1977. For major fans, it’s time to get all shook up and head to your local theater. For those not into Elvis or just not that familiar with one of the pioneers of rock and or roll, suspicious minds may still be interested.
The Bad Guys has been a series with me for a few years, having younger ones. My son has been into it for quite a while and when it came to the movie coming out I got to be a “I know what this is” asset to my film friends who had no idea where this animated flick was coming from. And it release to solid reviews which, knowing the source material, didn’t surprise me as it had them. Now its come home to 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray where it can continue to find audience. They are touting this as a Collector’s Edition primarily based on the fact it includes a brand new short as a bonus feature. Eddie Murphy’s 1992 romantic dramedy film Boomerang is one I’ve been eagerly awaiting a Blu-ray debut for over the years. Its pretty star studded and one of his best “I’m kind of the straight man now, no longer the goofball” movies of his that he would go on to do throughout the 90s. Paramount is finally putting the film (along with the Richard Pryor team up Harlem Nights) on Blu-ray on June 28th. The film will come with some deleted scenes and a commentary form its director. George Steven’s big Western epic, which happened to house the final performance of James Dean in a lead role (More of a supporting one honestly, but I’ll go with the tagline here), is coming to 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray. Giant is legendary for that Dean finality, but its much more than that. It was a major player in the Academy Awards, being nominated nine times, though on taking home the director trophy for Stevens. This 4K Ultra-HD disc only comes with a commentary track previously released and carries over none of the other previous bonus feature. You’ll be able to order it when it releases on June 21st. One of the year’s most original films and “Wait what? I HAVE to see that” concepts has come in the form of a tribute to one of cinema’s most noted thespians and film geek himself, Nicholas Cage. Playing himself in a movie about him caught up in a secret operation is a whirlwind of awesome that is one of the year’s best hooks. Said film was released to good reviews but didn’t quite hit like the internet demand may have hinted it would. Nonetheless, it exists and that’s all that really matters in this case. That film, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, is now available on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray (released on June 21st). It comes with Dolby Atmos sound and nice little array of extras to keep the fun going after the credits have rolled. For the month of June, Warner Archive Collection is clearly celebrating the centennial of the birthday of film icon Judy Garland. With three of her films making their debut on the format, there’s no doubt that was the idea. One of which is the 1945 film, The Clock, that co-stars Robert Walker and is directed by her future husband (And Liza’s dad), Vincente Minnelli. The disc will come with a nice handful of extras that either relate to the film or the era when it was released. Robert Eggers has quickly shot up everyone’s favorite indie director’s list with only 3 films under his belt. With a terrific debut in The VVitch and equally awesome follow up The Lighthouse, its easy to see why. In a sea of lots of safe and monotone looking films we see in the blockbuster market, his quirks, weirdness and visuals are of the most refreshing lot. Granted, he’s not for everyone as people who aren’t the biggest film buffs probably have them in the “terrible column”. But for them, his latest film The Northman felt like a bridge between the abstract and mainstream for him. And you’ll be able to check out his Viking tale on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ay. What do you think of when you hear the name Michael Bay. Some would say toxic masculinity. Some would say over the top. Some would say style over substance. There are also some that would say action film icon, auteur of mainstream cinema or underrated genius. I can put myself somewhere in the middle. The Rock is one of the finest action films of the 90’s or any decade. It’s big, loud, implausible and a whole lot of fun. Armageddon and Pearl Harbor are two of the most overlong, lazily plotted slogs through film that I’ve ever seen. They’re all from the same director. The same can be said even for franchise work from Bay. Bad Boysand Bad Boys II are two wildly different films to me. One works in a nice tight structure, while the other bloats like me after a big meal. This is all of course in my humble opinion… but why do I ask these questions and make these claims?
