American director Joshua Marston broke out in 2004 with his jolting, Oscar-nominated Maria Full of Grace, about a young Colombian woman working as a drug mule. In his remarkable follow-up, The Forgiveness of Blood, he turns his camera on another corner of the world: contemporary northern Albania, a place still troubled by the ancient custom of interfamilial blood feuds. From this reality, Marston sculpts a fictional narrative about a teenage brother and sister physically and emotionally trapped in a cycle of violence, a result of their father’s entanglement with a rival clan over a piece of land. The Forgiveness of Blood is a tense and perceptive depiction of a place where tradition and progress have an uneasy coexistence, as well as a dynamic coming-of-age drama.

Here we are once again with part 2 of our “flashback” series of album reviews covering that little ol’ band from Sweden: The Sounds! Three to four years after their electric new-wave album Living in America tore up the European charts and similarly making a dent here in America, Los Sonidos came back with their follow-up record called Dying To Say This To You. As part of our continuing coverage of all things “The Sounds” I will take you on a bit of journey and show you what makes them so special and unique among today’s (and yesterday’s) evolving musical paths. If you still have some leftover tea from our Living in America review then throw it out and pour yourself something a bit stronger. We’re about to hit the turbo! Sean S. Cunningham is the man that brought us Friday the 13th and exploited Halloween to open up the gates of horror to numerous copycats. All sorts of masked killers and teen murder mysteries became abound and dominant throughout the horror genre. Sean only did the one film though, he never returned the franchise opting to try and make “regular movies” and not horror films. However, he wound up back in the fold producing them within no time. With The Horror Show, Sean seemed to be trying to groom a new famous face in movie killer history with “Meat Cleaver Max” using his House franchise as a gateway to bring him to life. The film didn’t become the hit they wanted it to be and it even didn’t achieve much of a cult status like another film that year of similar subject matter. But I think it’s really great the film has resurfaced through Scream Factory as its actually not too bad and many horror fans should have a lot of fun going back and rediscovering it. Here’s something that just popped into my head in a very random way. I’ve been on a Sounds binge since the beginning of 2013 and it doesn’t seem to be letting up anytime soon, so I figured I’d review their entire catalog one album at a time. Why not, right? The catalyst was my recent review of their latest album entitled Weekend. Well, now we’re going to take it back about 10 years to when they first made their U.S. debut with their fun indie-rock/new wave sound album called Living in America. We’re going back in time. Please stick around for reviews of their entire catalog – albums 1-4. I’m still chuckling that it’s taken me 12 years to get to this point. That’s the power of rock n roll. It has always been in plain sight – it was up to me to put the pieces together. This should be pretty fun! Continue reading ‘The Sounds: Living in America (Album Review)’

Michael Caine, Donald Sutherland and Robert Duvall lead a star-studded cast in this World War II classic based on Jack Higgins’ best-selling novel. A Nazi Strike Force plots to kidnap Winston Churchill while he is resting in a desolate Norfolk village. Colonel Radl (Robert Duvall), Colonel Steiner (Michael Caine) and Liam Devlin (Donald Sutherland) are enlisted to carry out the operation, which if successful, would irrevocably alter the outcome of the war. Disguised as Polish airmen, these paratroopers descend upon England only to be interrupted by an unforeseeable incident which threatens to derail their treacherous mission. Packed with action and suspense, this unrelenting thriller was the final picture directed by the great John Sturges (The Great Escape, The Magnificent Seven). Thor: The Dark World seems like a clear statement by Marvel Studios, insisting that they are simply here to entertain. While there are more complex comic properties that have adapted into films featuring more than just adventurous heroics for the leads, spending two hours with Thor and the gang was an unlabored blast. It has its share of issues involving story presentation and the effectiveness of the villain, but I had such a good time watching this film and the main actors in it that I hardly felt troubled by the messiness of a film that tries really hard to keep moving and be entertaining. Regardless of all the strings that come with these various Marvel superhero films, I was very happy dive back into the world of Thor and witness Mjolnir in action.

Before I begin I have to be honest with you all. I forgot how awesome the first Thor movie really was until I revisited it this past weekend, finally being able to unwind and watch a Blu-ray in my new house. Anyway, the first Thor is a big ball of fun, in my opinion, and I embarrassingly remember how apprehensive I was back in the day when they first announced they were making a big screen solo adaptation of the Marvel Comics Norse superhero. I was definitely not a believer back then. Iron Man was one thing, but introducing the world to a mythological interstellar superhero was just not going to fly…at least I thought. Man, I could not have been more wrong. And coincidentally, I’m glad I was wrong about that because not only did I enjoy the first Thor film, but I also loved his character in the subsequent Avengers flick too. So here we are. It’s November 2013 and we all know what time it is, right? Of course we do! It’s time to get down with the further adventures of Thor! So go grab your hammer and come fly with me. I’m sorry, but Wolverine has nothing on Hugh Jackman’s character here in Prisoners. Whether or not you believe in his twisted form of justice or not is your problem. I just know that this guy is an animal in this film and I’m looking forward to re-visiting this one on Blu-ray when it arrives December 17th from Warner Bros. as a Blu-ray Combo Pack. Every moment matters in this release that includes bonus content featuring interviews with the all-star cast as well as an UltraViolet copy of the film too.
