Scream Factory continues its rampage of making Blu-ray horror fans a happy lot. At San Diego Comic Con last month, they announced a slew of upcoming titles. As a bonus, they also shared the news that they had finalized a deal to release the long sought after, fan demanded and legendary “Cabal Cut” of the 1990 Clive Barker film, Nightbreed. Today, they (teaming with Morgan Creek Productions) give their first “official” announcement of it and some other details regarding how it came to fruition. It appears as if the phrase “Cabal Cut” will only end up being fanspeak as they look to make an effort of referring to where the term “Cabal” came from but clearly labeling this as an “Extended Director’s Cut”. This is going to definitely be one of the biggest horror catalog releases next year and they definitely know what they have on their hands with what they’re calling an “aggressive rollout”. Since its Scream Factory, I don’t need to tell you how great the bonus features and box art are going to be. As always, stay tuned to Why So Blu? for future details and preorder of this hotly anticipated release! The official word from Scream Factory follows the jump! Well it’s that time of the year again! No, it’s not quite fall or the official start of the NFL season yet, but it’s getting pretty damn close. But let’s not be coy about it. You know what time it is! It’s the time of the year I love most…the month of August…because it’s my birthday! Haha. But no, seriously…this is the time of year when Anchor Bay Entertainment fills our company mailbox with AMC Walking Dead goodies…most notably the coveted Blu-ray release. And the month of August also means one more certain thing for the lovers of all things zombie. It signifies that the month of October and the beginning of a new season of The Walking Dead is less than 60 days away. Hooray! Premature celebration is in the air! However, in the meantime, let’s not put the carrot in front of the carriage just yet. Let’s take our time…maybe the next ten minutes or so and talk in depth about one of the hottest shows on television currently and one hell of a tension filled season. Of course I’m talking about the August 27th Blu-ray release of The Walking Dead: The Complete Third Season. Continue reading ‘The Walking Dead: The Complete Third Season (Blu-ray Review)’
Both had supposedly outlived their usefulness to the Circus, the British Secret Intelligence Service: George Smiley, the retired head of espionage, and General Vladimir, an aging informant who reported to him. When the general walks into a bullet after sending an urgent message to his old handler, the Circus asks Smiley to “tidy things up.” But Smiley hears Vladimir’s message as a call to arms against his nemesis, the Soviet super spy Karla, once again tantalizingly within his grasp in this gripping sequel to John le Carré’s classic Cold War-era spy drama, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Oscar winner Alec Guinness (Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars, Lawrence of Arabia) reprises his BAFTA-winning role as retired spymaster George Smiley for the 1982 sequel. Filmed on location in London, Paris, Hamburg, and Berne, Smiley’s People co-stars Patrick Stewart (Star Trek: The Next Generation, X-Men), Eileen Atkins (Upstairs, Downstairs), and Bill Paterson (Traffik). The miniseries also stars Anthony Bate, Bernard Hepton, Michael Lonsdale, Beryl Reid, and Michael Gough. Continue reading ‘Smiley’s People (Blu-ray Review)’
Before visiting The Great Gatsby theatrically this spring, I strongly held the opinion that this was either going to be one of those films you’d love or you’d hate with uncompromising passion, no middle ground in the equation. I know I found myself seriously conflicted in how I felt about it for months before I saw it. The first trailer did nothing to persuade me that this was a film I must-see. Other than my infinite love for Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge masterpiece, I had not one ounce of desire to partake in a viewing. And then came the second theatrical trailer and it totally erased all the negativity I had surrounding the picture. Despite not being the biggest fan of Carey Mulligan, I found myself longing to see this spectacular unfold on screen. And then boom! A third trailer was released and I felt a little uneasy again until I saw a preview for the film on the Cloud Atlas Blu-ray I was reviewing at the time. Talk about indecisiveness, eh? All I know is that after seeing this twice now I continuously melt over the heart wrenching love story, but I do know this…if you are not a fan of Moulin Rouge, this is not a movie for you. Be warned and move on below with caution. Continue reading ‘The Great Gatsby (Blu-ray Review)’
Every now and then I like to bring up my fondness for simplicity, when it really works. Europa Report is a science fiction film that is really stripped down to basics, using ideas similar to a film like Danny Boyle’s Sunshine and meshing them with a budget and approach similar to something like the indie film Monsters. The film could technically be classified as a thriller, but it works at being a story about people going on a mission and making smart decisions over the course of their journey, despite the drama that unfolds. It fits into the ‘found footage’ style, as the cameras are all based around the idea that they are attached to the ship, space suits, or simply a part of the pseudo-documentary approach. All of these elements add up to a well-made science fiction story, which only suffers from offering little in the way of ambition.
The day is finally upon us. A day that feels like it took forever to come. Honestly, I was unsure if this day would ever happen, but the sequel to 2010’s Kick-Ass is finally here!!! And it’s aptly named…Kick-Ass 2. Well, let’s be honest. They could have been a little more creative with that title, but I’m overjoyed this puppy is now in fruition and seeing the light of day. So I’ll take what I can get. And like it’s predecessor, Kick-Ass 2 is a superhero action comedy based on the comic book of the same name and the series known simply as Hit-Girl, which bridges the gaps between the first movie and the rise of the costumed heroes within the second film, by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. The only difference this time out is we are minus Nicholas Cage and Matthew Vaughn, who directed the first film, is now a co-producer as Jeff Wadlow takes helm of everything we see onscreen. So let the ass-kicking begin! Continue reading ‘Kick-Ass 2 Brings Out The Superhero In All Of Us (Movie Review)’
Writer Earl Derr Biggers created fictional Chinese-American sleuth Charlie Chan in a series of printed tales beginning in 1923. In 1926, the first of more than 48 Charlie Chan films was put on the silver screen. Actor Warner Oland, born in Sweden, began a popular run for Fox in 1931 in Charlie Chan Carries On. After its success, Fox would produce 15 more Chan films starring Oland. Not surprisingly, the films became the most popular in 1930s China. After Oland died, Sidney Toler, an American actor with Scottish roots, took on the Chan role. Toler starred in 22 Chan films, first for Fox and later for Monogram Studios. After Toler’s death, Roland Winters became Chan in six more films. The character has also been featured frequently on radio, television and in the comics. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment brings back the legendary master of crime in the Charlie Chan Collection – four beloved films making their DVD debut, and now available for the first time, newly remastered, as a single collection. Included are Shadows Over Chinatown, starring Toler in one of his last Chan films, plus Docks of New Orleans, Shanghai Chest, and The Golden Eye starring Roland Winters, the last actor to play the detective on film. Maybe one of the more unlikely comic properties to get a sequel, Kick-Ass was produced almost completely as an independent film, only to have its distribution rights bought and successfully turned into a big screen event. Unfortunately, while the Comic Con and geek crowd showed up for Kick-Ass, the film did not turn into the huge financial success many would have hoped for. Thanks to cult success, cut to a few years later and we now have Kick-Ass 2; a Universal Studios production that allows audiences to return to the comic property that meshes bright, colorful, superhero theatrics with a deconstruction of the genre. While entertaining to an extent, the only problem is the very thought of Kick-Ass 2 being a Universal Studios production. The irreverence is certainly still intact, but a lot of the wit and edge is missing this time around. That said, I had more fun than expected during this “superheroes who swear” sequel.

The Butler is the kind of movie I would normally dread watching, were I be one to base everything I see off of movie trailers or just be a very cynical person in general. Fortunately, I am not very cynical and am happy to give almost anything a chance. Despite knowing that this would be something like the black equivalent of Forest Gump, by having a lead character played the genuinely warm Forest Whitaker and pushing him through various stages of history and the Civil Rights Movement, I was indeed impressed by the large cast involved as well as the nature of this story, which turned out to be just as much a strong father and son tale, as well as a historical drama. This also highlights an issue of the film, which is how it has plenty of good intentions placed on too many stories, making it a bit too unfocused overall, despite praise that can be put upon some performances and various sections of the film.
I don’t know much about the film, but the quotes about it and the synopsis sure get me eager to see what this film has to offer. It looks like I’ll be finding out on October 15 as Hong Kong crime film master Johnny To brings his latest release to Blu-ray. Hong Kong cinema usually produces some great crime dramas, so I’m pretty excited to tackle this one. It appears to be an on the clock chase thriller. An inmate on death row for making meth has been given an opportunity to get out of his death sentence if he turns informant and brings down a powerful cartel. He’s got 72 hours. Sound pretty cool to me. After the jump you’ll find details regarding this release as well as a preorder link. Continue reading ‘Johnny To’s DRUG WAR Makes Its Way To Blu-ray October 15!’
I can’t say growing up that I was a Dolph Lundgren fan. Even if I wasn’t big on him then, looking back there’s some sort of nostalgia with him though. I never watched his ‘solo’ movies due to my childhood bias as he was the bad guy from Rocky IV and killed Apollo Creed. The only adventures I went on with Dolph were Masters Of The Universe (not even he could stop my boyhood He-Man fandom) and Universal Soldier. So, coming into Dark Angel (known in the US as I Come In Peace), I am quite the noob. And, boy, Scream Factory’s release has me itching to dig further into the Lundgren back catalog with this release. Oddly, I never knew of this movie’s existence until now. I don’t remember anything from it, be it box art at the video store or catching a few minutes on TV. This was a completely fresh viewing. Scream Factory brings us its first giant monster movie in Q: The Winged Serpent. This one is a little seen (nowadays) monster film starring some popular veteran character actors in David Carradine, Richard Roundtree and Michael Moriarty (and the feature film debut of John Capodice). The film was well received upon release by critics. Maybe this new release will help to find itself some newer fans. I can see it as a film that some may easily turn their nose nose up at quickly due to its “dated” fx. But I assure you the book is much better than its cover here. Its definitely a good rendition of some fun Saturday afternoon matinee kind of fun. Continue reading ‘Q: The Winged Serpent (Blu-ray Review)’
