X-Ray/Schizoid Double Feature (Blu-ray Review)

X-Ray-Schizoid1980-1983 is known as the “Golden Age” of the slasher film.  This horror subgenre got so popular there was almost a new one every week in theaters.  Slashers were cheap to make and brought in big returns.  Some studios built up and became something because of these films.  However many studios crashed and burned.  A lot of these films were lost or forgotten due to studios going out of business.  One of those studios was the well known Cannon films.  Scream Factory has gone in and saved 2 of these early slasher films that have never even had a DVD release.  X-Ray and Schizoid are making their first appearance in the home video market since VHS.  Being a fan of slashers and never having seen either, I was excited to dig in to this release! The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty Trailer

walter mitty 2Trailers are not posted very often, because we tend to be busy providing the latest coverage in regards to Blu-rays, movie reviews, and most recently – Comic Con.  However, a recent trailer has launched for an upcoming film that puts Ben Stiller back in the director’s chair.  The film is The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.  It is a new adaptation of a story from back in 1939, which as previously been made into a film.  The film arrives this Christmas and It is the story of a timid magazine photo manager who lives life vicariously through daydreams and embarks on a true-life adventure when a negative goes missing.  I dug the trailer and was sent the link, so I figured why not post it.  Continue on to view the trailer.

‘Drinking Buddies’ Have A Fun, Improv-Heavy, Good Time (Movie Review)

drinking buddies whysoblu thumbDrinking Buddies is a step forward in the film world for writer/director Joe Swanberg, who has specialized in making films of the mumblecore variety.  To catch some up on what that term means, the concept of mumblecore revolves around independent films that are very low budget, largely improvised by the performers (generally amateur actors), and shot in very naturalistic ways, including lighting and real world-locations.  Swanberg’s latest feature is the largest in scale, as it involves several well-known actors and a clearer structure that is somewhat familiar, but still working off what the cast brings to the material most of all.  As a result, Drinking Buddies feels somewhat slight, overall, but the quality of the performances (one in particular) is enough to make it a solid watch.  Setting a lot of action around a craft brewery does not exactly hurt either.

House Party: Tonight’s The Night (DVD Review)

House-Party-Tonights-The-NightAny franchise can be resurrected nowadays.  In 1990, New Line Cinema released House Party which wound up being a surprise hit that spawned now 4 sequels.  These films were party comedies, focusing on a thin main plot with the main characters while having multiple goofy side characters with little arcs as well.  You’ve seen this type of film aped before and maybe it was House Party that brought it to the forefront.  The first 2 sequels were hits as well and meant to be a finished trilogy.  In 2000, a direct-to-video sequel brought back the franchise for a one off.  Now, Warner’s Premiere label has decided to reboot this franchise for the modern generation. Comic-Con 2013: Mortal Kombat Legacy

mk logoBack in 2011, fans of the popular video game series Mortal Kombat were treated to a brand new way of experiencing the series and various characters through the means of a pretty solid web series (which I covered HERE).  Mortal Kombat Legacy was a much grittier portrayal of the world of Mortal Kombat, with an emphasis on applying a real world quality to the series, despite involving fantastical elements, such as the god of thunder, Raiden.  Regardless, the web series was a hit at the time, but has only slowly leaked out information regarding the new season.  Well, there was a panel at San Diego Comic Con this year, which was a great way to reintroduce audiences to the series.  While a trailer was released a few months ago, fans got a new look at this upcoming season, as well as some information in regards to how things are going to change for the better.  Continue on to learn more about this panel, check out some photos, and take a look at the latest trailer.

‘The Wolverine’ Sinks His Claws Into A Strong Standalone Feature (Movie Review)

the wolverine whysoblu poster 3-001You have got to hand it to Hugh Jackman.  He began his American film career by starring as Wolverine in Bryan Singer’s X-Men back in 2000 and he has remained loyal to the franchise.  Despite proving his versatility as an actor, including his garnering of an Oscar nomination this past year for Les Miserables, Jackman has stepped into the shoes of Logan 6 times now (7, if you include next year’s X-Men: Days of Future Past).  The man clearly has a love for playing this character and that is expressed better than ever in The Wolverine.  Taking a step away from the X-Men franchise as a whole, this film is content with telling a smaller story with focus, as it deals with the journey of just one character and what it means to have lived a life full of everlasting pain.  It also happens to be set in a world of comic book characters, allowing it to still have lots of action and fun with the premise.  The result makes me happy to view The Wolverine as the best comic book movie of the summer.

Trance (Blu-ray Review)

Trance BluTrance is one of those 2013 films like Stoker where I had every intention of seeing it theatrically, but for one reason or another the stars didn’t align properly and ultimately plans fell through.  Simply put, I call that the hardships of life.  And much like Stoker, movie goers and critics alike have given Trance higher than average regards thus giving me slightly elevated expectations.  So that says something to me, right?  Of course it does!  My mind works in both quantifications and justifications.  So on average I should have anywhere from a 60 to 70 percent chance of liking both films.  However, unlike Stoker, it wasn’t a letdown to me and I really enjoyed being “hypnotized” by Danny Boyle’s Trance.  Wanna know why?  Come on!  You know you do. Comic-Con 2013: Marvel Panel

Marvel-Studios-LogoOut of all of the panels that were to appear in Hall H this year, the one that I was looking forward to the most (with the exception of Harrison Ford), was the Marvel one and it also proved to be the hardest one to get into as well.  I love superhero comics and movies (both DC and Marvel) so I was very excited to see what Marvel had planned for Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier as they were the only two announced panels.  I knew that Marvel being Marvel, would of course have something secret that they would spring on us and I couldn’t wait to see what it was.  I thought it might be an official announcement for The Avengers 2 or maybe some welcome news of a brand new franchise like Doctor Strange or something. I thought there might even be a mention of The Guardians of the Galaxy, but considered that to be somewhat unlikely since they just started filming the movie.  They couldn’t possibly have footage to show after fourteen days of filming right?  And there’s no chance that Loki could show up to belittle the Hall H crowd either right?  Well, true believers you just might be surprised… Continue reading ‘Comic-Con 2013: Marvel Panel’

Comic-Con 2013: Sony & Screen Gems Panel

sony_pictures_logo_288x288Sony Pictures had a big day on Friday at San Diego Comic Con this year, mainly due to the debut of footage from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and the panel that went along with it (an article on that can be found HERE).  With that said, there were plenty of other exciting things going on with Sony and Screen Gems at Hall H that day, which included presentations from 3 of their other upcoming films:  Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 (something I was personally really excited about), The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (a book series I know next to nothing about…sorry), and the debut of footage from the remake of RoboCop (hopefully not as dull as the Total Recall remake from a year prior).  The following post is all about what exactly went down at this packed presentation, along with some film photos, panel photos, and videos.  Take a look!

Comic-Con 2013: The Legend of Korra

Korra_SDCC_Poster_FINAL-001For this San Diego Comic Con post, I am going to have to emphasize the word ‘unfortunate’, because it was very unfortunate that I could not make it to the panel for the animated series The Legend of Korra.  A new season will be premiering in the fall and it is a great show that I am very much looking forward to.  This Emmy-winning sequel series to the Emmy-winning Avatar: The Last Airbender was one of the best shows on TV last year.  Not just as far as animated show go, but television in general.  It combines incredibly well-animated action and settings with strong characters and very interesting concepts, all while being wholly appropriate for people of all ages.  While I was not able to attend the panel, which actually screened the first episode of the upcoming season (Comic Con is just too incredibly busy of a time to see everything), I was able to find some highlights from the panel, which can be found below, along with some photos and a trailer for the upcoming season.  Enjoy.

Scream Factory Unveils All New Extras For PRINCE OF DARKNESS!

Prince-Of-DarknessNobody does John Carpenter’s films justice on home video like Scream Factory.  They’ve already released 4 titles directed or produced by him and have 2 more slated for release before the year ends.  One of those is his 1987 cult classic Prince of Darkness.  It’s a film that reunites Carpenter with actor Donald Pleasance, who starred in Carpenter’s breakout film Halloween.  These new extras feature a new interview and commentary with John Carpenter himself (he can be tough to get ahold of for these things nowadays).  In addition, rock legend Alice Cooper and frequent composing collaborator Alan Howarth have interviews.  Also appearing is another episode of the always informative Horrors Hallowed Grounds series (will Robert Russler show up yet again?).  Also, if you act now and preorder from Scream Factory’s official site (click here) you will receive an exclusive 18×24 poster featuring the new artwork.  Prince of Darkness comes out September 24, which for Blu-ray collectors an d fans should be “John Carpenter Day”.  Continue on to get all the details! Get On That ‘To Do List’ (Movie Review)

to do list whysoblu thumbI should start by saying I liked this movie.  The To Do List is a fun summer comedy that mixes absurd raunchiness and some sincere qualities in terms of what the journey means to the lead character, when all is said and done.  It also happens to be another coming-of-age film, which will be in far less theaters than some of the bigger comedies, but still fits the bill of a little indie that could, were it to break out.  Also, it’s a coming-of-age film that was written and directed by a woman and centers on a female character.  I am not one to do too much discussion about gender politics, but aside from being a pretty funny (and filthy) movie, it is coming from a perspective that does not get seen as much, when it comes to these sorts of stories.  Emphasizing once again that I liked the film, it does help that this is not only a movie by a women, starring a women, in a genre generally dominated by boys, but one that does not throw that fact into your face.

Comic-Con 2013: The Zero Theorem

The-Zero-TheoremNo Comic Con is complete without a little bit of weirdness on one of the panels and thankfully we had a new film from writer/director/Monty Python veteran Terry Gilliam to provide plenty of weirdness.  The Zero Theorem is the latest project from the famed and eccentric director of films such as 12 Monkeys and Brazil.  Occurring later in the afternoon on Thursday in Hall H, it was certainly a low-key but interesting panel to watch, as Gilliam makes very interesting films, which are sometimes a success and sometimes a mess.  Here is the panel description:  Appearing on stage to introduce the trailer, the first 10 minutes from the film and take your questions are producers Zev Foreman (Killer Joe), Dean Zanuck (Get Low) and Terry’s daughter Amy Gilliam (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus), who produced many of the commercials featured in the film. The panel will be moderated by Gina McIntyre of the Los Angeles Times’ Hero Complex.  Read on to learn more about what went down on this panel as well as see some brand new photos from the film.

Comic-Con 2013: 20th Century Fox Panel

Logo_20th_century_foxAlthough Fox never listed what was going to be covered during their Comic-Con panel this year, I knew I had to be there because I was pretty sure that The Wolverine would be included and I had a sneaky suspicion that we might get to see some X-Men: Days of Future Past footage.  I was right on both counts, but there was still some big surprises in store.  It was a panel that included a funny pickup line,  the concept of a Wolverine Broadway musical, and some absolutely amazing footage that I was happy to see twice. The Demented (Blu-ray Review)

DementedEverybody seems to want to get into the zombie business these days.  And if you want to be different or above that, you go and call them “infected”.  Back in the early 1980s, everybody wanted to cash in on the slasher genre.  They were cheap to make and could win you a healthy profit at the box office.  In this last decade and still going now, the zombie film seems to be the modern day slasher in those terms.  With the advent of being able to do CG or easily seclude people and bloody up some extras, every seems to have a story to tell.  And the zombies do sell very well.  So why not?  Anchor Bay brings us another example of this with their new release, The Demented.  It’s a film that has a solid finish, but pitter patters on its way there.
