Upon hearing that this year would see the release of Life of Pi, a 3D film adaptation of the bestselling, but supposedly unfilmable book by Yann Martel, I was immediately feeling the same vibe that I had from Hugo in 2011. This feeling was amplified further upon learning that it was going to be directed by Ang Lee, a versatile director, who has yet to be grounded in one particular genre. Both films are fantastical adventures to an extent, which utilize a theme of storytelling at their core. They are also both visual delights, with the use of 3D actually amplifying the experience as opposed to taking away from it. Life of Pi works on many levels and is certainly suited to a release at this time of year, as it is an incredibly earnest, yet exciting film and a visual treat for families to see, but one that has a lot more on its mind as well.

Every year since 2008 fans have been treated to a movie from the Twilight series of books written by Stephenie Meyers. As I have watched these movies throughout the years I have discovered that this series isn’t just for teenage girls. I have seen Grandmothers, Grandfathers, Fathers, Mothers, and yes young girls fall in love with the story of Bella and Edward. Now that the final movie of the Twilight Saga is out, where do we go from here? I know I am going to miss Edward and Bella and the rest of the Cullen family… Continue reading ‘Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 (Movie Review)’

So it seems like this past summer had a lot of people heading to the art house theaters to see either Moonrise Kingdom or The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, if not both, which mostly resulted in major praise for either one. I had never got around to seeing the latter and it was because I thought it would inevitably come off with me being down on the film for playing as how it looked: a group of elderly English people visiting a foreign land and having ‘hilarious’ situations occur and matters of inappropriate decorum come up in the process. Now that I have seen the film, I certainly have some thoughts on it, along with how the Blu-ray for this breakout summer hit stacks up. Read on to find out whether or not I was with this adventure for the elderly. Continue reading ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (Blu-ray Review)’

Silver Linings Playbook is a film by writer/director David O. Russell (Three Kings, The Fighter), which is much better than one would believe it to be. From the outside, it looks like a story of good-looking people with problems, who may inevitably end up together. In lesser hands, this material could seem trite, but the script for the film is incredibly sharp, getting around its formulaic aspects to prove itself as a frequently funny, well-acted, and emotional film about two people rebuilding their lives. It works as a modern-day screwball comedy that has a sense of reality, as its characters deal with the issues that make them different, making it a film that I will not be surprised to see embraced by audiences all over. So here’s a film that I know connected with a lot of people that were able to see it in theaters and will probably connect with those who seek it out on Blu-ray, when it arrives this coming February. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a wonderful coming-of-age film, with nice performances all around, and it hits shelves on Blu-ray and DVD on February 12, 2013. It is a film based on the best-selling novel from author Stephen Chbosky, who actually wrote and directed the film as well. From the reaction it received, the film seems to be in line to take up the mantle as one of the best films about surviving in high school, akin to some of the work from John Hughes, among others (I’ll support Rushmore in this case). I know I certainly liked it (review HERE). From what I can tell, the Blu-ray does not seem to be lacking in more content to explore, regarding the film and those involved in bringing the novel to life. Read on to learn more about this upcoming Blu-ray release. Continue reading ‘Become Infinite With ‘THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER’ on Blu-ray & DVD on February 12th’

This is certain to excite a few people. While I am a Star Wars guy through and through, I certainly cannot deny that Star Trek is one of the things that will get the masses excited, especially now that J.J. Abrams had a hand in reinvigorating the franchise with his 2009 reboot. So for anyone asking themselves, “Hey, where’s the sequel at already?” here is the chance to find out what is in store for them, as a 9-minute sneak preview will be arriving in IMAX 3D theaters on December 14th. This should be especially nice for those already planning on seeing The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on opening night, as they will be getting this special bonus with their film, much like how The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises were given the same treatment. The Star Trek footage will be the first 9 minutes of the highly anticipated film and it will be exclusively shown in Digital IMAX 3Dtheaters worldwide on that date. An excellent adventure indeed, this time travelling buddy comedy could have easily been a poor man’s Back to the Future, but it instead does its own thing and managed to become a fairly beloved cult film, which introduced many people to Keanu Reeves and super megastar Alex Winter :). It has now finally arrived on Blu-ray for people to continue to enjoy. The film revolves around two slackers getting their lives together via a time travel machine in the form of a phone booth, which will help them complete their all-important high school history project. This may sound extraordinarily silly for those who haven’t seen it, but it has a good heart and manages to be cleverer than it may seem as well. Read on to learn more about the film and whether the Blu-ray is bogus or righteous. Continue reading ‘Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (Blu-ray Review)’

Walt Disney Animation Studios and Emmy-winning director Rich Moore (TV’s “The Simpsons,” “Futurama”) take moviegoers on a hilarious, arcade-game-hopping journey in “Wreck-It Ralph.” Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly, “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” “Step Brothers”) is tired of being overshadowed by Fix-It Felix (voice of Jack McBrayer, “30 Rock”), the “good guy” star of their game who always gets to save the day. But after decades doing the same thing and seeing all the glory go to Felix, Ralph decides he’s tired of playing the role of a bad guy. He takes matters into his own massive hands and sets off on a game-hopping journey across the arcade through every generation of video games to prove he’s got what it takes to be a hero. On his quest, he meets the tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (voice of Jane Lynch, TV’s “Glee”) from the first-person action game Hero’s Duty. But it’s the feisty misfit Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Sarah Silverman, “The Sarah Silverman Program”) from the candy-coated cart racing game, Sugar Rush, whose world is threatened when Ralph accidentally unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens the entire arcade. Will Ralph realize his dream and save the day before it’s too late? “Wreck-It Ralph” crashes onto the big screen on November 2, 2012, in Disney Digital 3D in select theaters.
