Here’s a press release hot out of my inbox from my favorite PR person over at Anchor Bay, but equally important, it’s a press release of one of the hottest shows on television…period…and it’s coming to Blu-ray this August. I could not be more excited than I am now. If you could see me you would see me doing my happy dance. What an incredible birthday present for me this year! That’s right, I’m talking about none other than The Walking Dead: The Complete Second Season coming to life on Blu-ray and DVD August 28th courtesy of your good friends over at Anchor Bay Entertainment. I don’t think I even need to say anything else about the show. In case you missed Season 1, check out my review here, but be prepared to be mind-blown by the events in Season Two. It’s surreal. Check out the full press release and the promotional video below, but more importantly…PRE-ORDER NOW! Continue reading ‘The Walking Dead: The Complete Second Season Infects Blu-ray This August’

Just to get it out of the way, I am a big fan of writer/director Wes Anderson’s work (Rushmore, The Royal Tenembaums, Fantastic Mr. Fox, etc.) and was already inclined to enjoy his latest film. The fact that I really enjoyed Moonrise Kingdom does not come from a bias however; it comes from recognizing a well-made feature that is full great things, which includes warmth, whimsy, and affecting moments. Anderson’s idiosyncratic filmmaking sensibilities have served him well here, providing a film that should play well to more than just the audience that already enjoys his films. It is the sense of innocence that is wrapped up inside a film that is frequently humorous and always alive with visual details that makes it a film worth seeking out. Critically acclaimed by critics and viewers alike, Ken Burns and Lynn Novick’s powerful and acclaimed documentary The War made its Blu-ray on May 15, 2012 from PBS Distribution and Paramount Home Media Distribution. Six years in the making, the epic, seven-part film directed and produced by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick explores the history and horror of the Second World War from an American perspective through the personal accounts of men and women from four quintessentially American towns. Revealing the most intimate human dimensions of a worldwide catastrophe, the 15-hour documentary paints a vivid portrait of how the war touched the lives of every family on every street in every town in America. The War is narrated by Emmy Award-winner Keith David and includes voiceovers from acclaimed performers such as Tom Hanks, Samuel L. Jackson, Josh Lucas, Adam Arkin and Eli Wallach and features recordings by Norah Jones and Wynton Marsalis, as well as war-era favorites from Benny Goodman, Nat ‘King’ Cole and more. Presented in pristine high-definition, the Blu-ray also boasts nearly two hours of special features including filmmaker commentary, deleted scenes, additional interviews and a making of featurette. Greetings. Welcome to my 105th professional Blu-ray review. In today’s review, I contemplate my childhood. Growing up, I remember being “madly” enamored by Mad magazine, particularly one regular strip in particular, Spy vs. Spy. Do you remember those? Those black and white characters had me in stitches every time I read their strip and I was overjoyed when they were eventually commercialized into everything from an animated television series to trading cards and video games. The reason I mention these crudely animated little fellows is because they are exactly what I thought about the first time I saw the theatrical trailer for This Means War. And it also meant the return of McG. In the eyes of the critics out there besides myself, I wonder what fairs worse? Continue reading ‘This Means War (Blu-ray Review)’

Everyone nod you heads, because the black suits have come back. Still protecting the earth from the scum of the universe, the Men In Black have returned, but most importantly, they have redeemed themselves with an enjoyable third entry that gets better as it goes along. It has been a while since the last ‘Big Willie Weekend’, but Will Smith and everyone involved have managed to come up with a film that outshines its overblown production troubles. A lot of the same wit and humor that made the first film so enjoyable is present here, along with the strong makeup/effects work that has been present throughout the series. While it does take some time to really get going, the strong finish is what truly makes Men In Black 3 a worthwhile summer sci-fi comedy. Continue reading ‘‘Men In Black’ In Time’

Here’s another one I missed in the theaters. Dammit! But I did hear good things about it. Nevertheless, the action-thriller Man on a Ledge features an all star cast, led by Sam Worthington (Avatar, Clash of the Titans, Terminator: Salvation) as an ex-cop who escapes from prison to plan the ultimate heist: steal a $40 million diamond from a cutthroat businessman, and in the process prove his innocence. Hailed by critics as “a heart-pounding adrenaline rush,” the film will debut on Blu-ray and DVD on May 29th. But we have something better planned for one lucky reader. How would you like to win a Blu-ray prize pack that includes not only the Blu-ray, but also a black baseball cap with the film’s logo and a black coffee tumbler, also with the film’s logo? Wow! Now you’re talking! Way to sweeten the pot, Lionsgate! Please read on to learn how to win all of this! Continue reading ‘MAN ON A LEDGE Blu-ray Prize Pack Giveaway Contest!’

I could have easily titled this article “G.I. Joe & the Paramount Predicament” as it’s no secret by now that next month’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation is no longer slated for a June 29th release. Actually, it’s not even on the radar for this year, but instead has been pushed back to March of 2013. This move has many scratching their heads and has already caused many a fan to react unfavorably toward the news that came out of left field earlier this week. So what is Paramount’s real reason for this unprecedented change in release dates?

Hell on Wheels tells the epic story of post-Civil War America, focusing on a soldier who sets out to exact revenge on the Union soldiers who have killed his wife. His journey takes him west to Hell on Wheels, a dangerous, raucous, lawless melting pot of a town that travels with and services the construction of the railroad, an engineering feat unprecedented for its time. The lavishly-produced series documents the railroad’s engineering and construction, as well as institutionalized greed and corruption, the immigrant experience and the plight of newly emancipated African-Americans during Reconstruction. Chronicling this potent turning point in our nation’s history, this fan favorite series shows just how uncivilized the business of civilization can be across 10 absorbing episodes. J discovers that there are secrets to the universe that K never told him — secrets that will reveal themselves as he teams up with the young Agent K (Josh Brolin) to save his partner, the agency, and the future of humankind. Mash-up genre author Seth Grahame-Smith’s career is one I’m watching very closely and with great admiration for my own selfish reasons. I last visited his work in 2010 with my review of his masterpiece, in my opinion, Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter (see my book review here). Coincidentally, Grahame-Smith was able to adapt that story to the big screen making it along with Prometheus, one of my most anticipated films this June (see the theatrical trailer here). In addition to next month’s big screen debut, Grahame-Smith has been keeping himself very busy with his first motion picture writing credit, Johnny Depp and Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, his resurrection of the Beetlejuice franchise, development of a stop motion animated B-movie monster film, Night of the Living, and of course, the reason we are all here, last April’s release of his third full length novel, Unholy Night. Directed by lauded filmmaker and photographer Lauren Greenfield, who won the U.S. Directing Award for Documentary Film at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival for this film, The Queen of Versailles is a character-driven documentary about a billionaire family and their financial challenges in the wake of the economic crisis. With epic proportions of Shakespearean tragedy, the film follows two unique characters, whose rags-to-riches success stories reveal the innate virtues and flaws of the American Dream. The film begins with the family triumphantly constructing the biggest house in America, a 90,000 sq. ft. palace. Over the next two years, their sprawling empire, fueled by the real estate bubble and cheap money, falters due to the economic crisis. Major changes in lifestyle and character ensue within the cross-cultural household of family members and domestic staff. Continue reading ‘‘The Queen of Versailles’ in theaters July 20, 2012′
