X-Men: First Class – The Best Marvel Film Ever. Period.

No teasers in that title, eh? I debated back and forth in my mind, searching for some crafty heading for an article on the most recent Marvel Comics film. After wrestling with a few ideas, I said heck with it. Just call it like it is. I was amped sitting in my theater seat watching this tale unfold. Now let’s find out why this movie was just so damn good.

‘The Tree of Life’ Is Beautifully Obscure

It almost feels daunting to start to try and describe my thoughts on the latest Terrence Malick film, The Tree of Life.  I certainly enjoyed the movie, but for a review, establishing what it is about this profoundly reflective film that encompasses many different themes stemming from a personal place for its writer/director certainly presents a challenge.  I have read many comparisons of this film to Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, which feels very appropriate in many ways.  Tree of Life manages to encompass a scope that feels similar to Kubrick’s sci-fi classic.  As a Malick film, this certainly feels like a deeply personal project that was somehow able to get off the ground and be made by a willing enough studio.  I think that my prose in this opening paragraph alone is already somewhat scattershot, as I do have many more things to say about the film. Mortal Kombat: Legacy – Ep. 8: Scorpion and Sub Zero (Part 2)

This week’s episode of the web series adaptation of the Mortal Kombat video game, Mortal Kombat: Legacy, finishes what the previous week’s episode started. Having pitted two fan favorite characters, Scorpion and Sub Zero, against each other in last week’s episode, seeing the conclusion of that match must have certainly been anticipated by the fans of this series. Seeing as how only five minutes, not including the previous episode recap and the end credits, have been given to the actual episode, this was a quickly paced episode that brought out some of the goods in true Mortal Kombat fashion. Signature moves were used, techno music was utilized, and some other key characters made an appearance. Enjoy: Continue reading ‘Mortal Kombat: Legacy – Ep. 8: Scorpion and Sub Zero (Part 2)’

The Firm (Blu-ray Review)

Paramount Pictures has gone to its catalog vault and brought The Firm to Blu-ray in a Best Buy EXCLUSIVE.  The Firm is Sydney Pollack’s take on John Grisham’s legal thriller of the same name.  Tom Cruise stars in the The Firm which features a most impressive all star cast including Gene Hackman, Hal Holbrook, David Strathairn, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Holly Hunter, Ed Harris, and Gary Busey.  Talk about wow!  The Firm is yet another film that I have never seen before, but everyone I’ve talked to throughout the years has always said it was good.  Let us see how it stacks up on Blu-ray.   Continue reading ‘The Firm (Blu-ray Review)’

Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” (CD Review)

You can both love her and embrace everything about her or you can hate her and pretend you are one of the cool kids.  Whatever you side is, there’s no denying that leading lady of pop is back.  I’m talking about Lady Gaga of course.  I thought long and hard before writing this review.  Should I or shouldn’t I?  Life is too short to waste on things that truly do not matter so in the case of Gaga’s newest album, Born This Way, I let it slowly digest for the past week before deciding whether or not it was truly worthy of investing time in and writing about.  In other words, the verdict is in.  I’m a fan of Gaga’s newest album.  However, I always hate it when people give me such a simple answer.  It irks me to no end.  The word okay also does that too.  What does okay even mean?  It’s like maybe.  It means nothing. The Manchurian Candidate (Blu-ray Review)

Time to dive back into the classics!  Classic films on Blu-ray always make me smile, because of the luster and time period, and because most of the time I wasn’t even born yet.  It’s great to see how films were made back in the day.  The Manchurian Candidate is one of these films.  Make no mistake now, this is the original 1962 release and not that abomination of a remake with Denzel Washington.  The original Manchurian Candidate starred Frank Sinatra, Laurence Harvey, Angela Lansbury, Janet Liegh, and Henry Silva.  That’s a very impressive cast.  Will this be a very impressive Blu-ray?  Let us visit with The Manchurian Candidate, shall we?  Continue reading ‘The Manchurian Candidate (Blu-ray Review)’

An All-Star Go-Kart Race To The Finish, Benefiting The American Diabetes Association

Over the 2011 Memorial Day weekend, I had the chance to cover a very special event out in the Los Angeles area.  On May 28th, at the K1 Speed Indoor Racing facility in Gardena, California, I was able to witness the Celebrity Go-Kart Tournament, which brought forth a number of stars helping to produce awareness and show their support for the American Diabetes Association.  Many stars, both young and adult, along with their families, were willing to come out on a beautiful Saturday afternoon and race for awareness, while also have a fun time for the sake of a good, charitable cause. Platoon (Blu-ray Review)

Appropriate for Memorial Day here in the U.S. today is a Blu-ray review about a film looking at the Vietnam War.  Simply called Platoon, it’s not the project that earned Oliver Stone his first Academy Award, but it certainly didn’t fly under the radar either, garnering four of the little golden statues for directing, film editing, sound, and best picture. Now, a quarter of a century later, arguably the greatest Vietnam movie of all time is now available on Blu-ray.  The film actually comes in a DVD/Blu-ray combo pack, which is a bit puzzling.  I say get rid of the dvd and give me a digital copy instead (what am I supposed to do with a dvd??).  That aside, we’ve got one very important movie to review here.

Savage County (DVD Review)

Here we are again with some more horror material to hopefully satiate your horror-film palette.  Savage County is a DVD release from the FilmBuff Company and MTV New Media.  In essence, this is more DTV  (direct-to-video) programming on a low budget scale.  The question remains as to whether it’s any good or not.  Savage County was made on  a $250,000 budget which by all intents and purposes is a lot of money.  How does it compare to the many horror movies out there that share similar themes and storylines?  Get ready to cross township lines and enter Savage County on DVD courtesy of Why So Blu.   Continue reading ‘Savage County (DVD Review)’
