I remember seeing the billboard ads around town for this flick and thinking to myself, if the poster art is this cool, then hopefully the movie will be too. Well thankfully, my wait to find is out is closely approaching as the visually stunning martial arts film, The Warrior’s Way, will arrive on the Blu-ray format June 28th. The movie stars Geoffrey Rush, Kate Bosworth and Jang Dong Gun. I could make a joke here, but I’m going to keep what’s on my mind to myself for once in my life. So anyway, check out the full press release below from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Continue reading ‘Assassin…Hero…Legend…The Warrior’s Way on Blu-ray!’

In my third go-round with covering mixed martial arts events this past January, I had the opportunity to see Norwalk, Ohio-native James Pfeiffer take the octagon in a match that went the distance with Pfeiffer exiting as the victor. In the grapple-heavy match, both fighters wore each other down, surpassing the limits of exhaustion for the common man. Pfeiffer, however, with an appetite for winning and a physique that makes women swoon over the 22-year old, was the one raising his arms after the 3-round decision. In March, Pfeiffer once again took it to his counterpart in what would be the most teeth-clenching, adrenaline-inducing match I’ve yet to watch.

Casino Jack was a 2010 film that may have had a chance to bring some more good graces to the already very accomplished Kevin Spacey. His portrayal of lobbyist Jack Abramoff was a very good turn that played well off of his talents as an actor. The film ended up being largely dismissed; however, I still found it to be an entertaining comedic drama and biopic. Revisiting the film, my opinions on it remain the same, but it is a film that is worth seeking out, now that it is on a very good looking Blu-ray. Continue reading ‘Casino Jack (Blu-ray Review)’

I admit to being a little too old to be a fan of the High School Musical (HSM) movies, yet I enjoyed them all. If their target audience is 16 years old (and I may be guessing high), I am 17 years beyond that demographic. None the less, I did enjoy those movies and I think Zac Ephron is cute. For those of you who may not know, Ashley Tisdale played a character named Sharpay. Don’t let the name fool you, she is not a dog or a cartoon character she is the arch nemesis to HSM’s Vanessa Hudgens. Fans of the HSM movies will be disappointed that none of the original film’s main characters have even cameos in this one. This is all about Sharpay, and her fabulous adventure. After showing the world what he could do with Henry V in 1989, Kenneth Branagh returned with another Shakespearean movie with Much Ado About Nothing, which was filled with a ton of talented people. Some of these people like Denzel Washington, Emma Thompson, and Michael Keaton were perfectly cast while others such as Robert Sean Leonard, Kate Beckinsale, and especially Keanu Reeves were horribly miscast. It’s a credit to his talents, that Branagh’s comedic film about warring sexes still works as well as it does despite the miscasting. Once you add in this cast, and the beautiful surroundings of Tuscany, and a nice score by Patrick Doyle, you have a winning combination that makes Shakespeare more appealing to modern audiences and a fresh, cheerful, and fun film in its own right.

A few months ago, in another review, I confessed to never having seen a Twilight movie. I must now also confess that I have never seen a movie based on a Nicholas Sparks novel. However, I have read the book by Sara Gruen, which Water for Elephants is based on. While the first two facts distance me from what I guess were concerns to other people – namely the abilities of Robert Pattinson in non-tween vampire roles and the constrictions of melodramatic romance films, the third fact kept an element of expectation hovering over me, as I anticipated this feature. Fortunately, I think this is a decent film. Continue reading ‘Who’s Thirsty For ‘Water For Elephants’?’

I think the aspect I enjoyed most about Disneynature’s third major Earth Day release, African Cats, is how they tried to create a narrative through line for it. A lot of nature documentaries simply present the facts, while showing you some shots of creatures and environments, but this film (even if it cheats a bit) has a lot of fun with actually presenting a storyline to keep you specifically involved with the ‘cats’ that are presented in this film. It also helps that you have the cat’s pajamas of acting talents (Samuel L. Jackson) narrating the film. ‘Nuff said. Continue reading ‘Be Prepared To Run and Play With ‘African Cats’’

I Love You Phillip Morris may be one of the most unconventional love stories of all time. It could also be considered one of Jim Carrey’s most daring career moves of all time as well. You know, with the whole “gay” stigma out there in the world, a role like this taken by any other actor without clout could be bad for their career. What would his loyal fan base think? I Love You Phillip Morris is a comedy which is based on a true story. I Love You Phillip Morris is also a raunchy comedy from the people that brought you Bad Santa, so take that as you will. Please be advised that some of the names may have been changed to protect the guilty and the innocent. Continue reading ‘I Love You Phillip Morris (Blu-ray Review)’

I generally try to avoid reality television shows but when I was asked to review The History Channel’s Ice Road Truckers, I decided to give it a shot and I ended up enjoying it more than I thought I would, which you can read about right here. When I was offered the spin-off program Ice Road Truckers: Deadliest Roads, I was curious enough to check that out too since the danger level has escalated quite a bit since the dangerous roads the truckers now have to survive are in the Himalayas. As dangerous as the roads in Alaska can be they are nothing compared to the one lane roads with hardly any safety barriers to prevent you from falling thousands of feet.

I have to say I was totally psyched to see this movie after reading the book. Why you ask? Because it involves some of my favorite things in life, and if only for 2 hours, I was finally able to run away with the circus! First of all, who doesn’t love the circus? Do you remember being at the circus begging your parents for cotton candy, candy apples, peanuts to feed the elephants, and watching all those clowns climb out of that car? How did they all fit in there? Secondly, who doesn’t love a romantic and dangerous adventure? A knight in shining armor rescuing a girl from an evil villain. Who doesn’t hope for that fairy tale happy ending? And we all know a good cry can cleanse the soul. Finally, Robert Pattinson’s transition from Vamp to Vet was something I did not want to miss. And I wasn’t going to. Continue reading ‘Think Twice Before Drinking The ‘Water For Elephants’’

Yep. You read that right. My favorite PR person sent this over to me a few days ago and I apologize about taking my good old time to get this up, but it has to be seen. The below video is actually a clip from the upcoming SyFy film Dinoshark that will be released on Blu-ray next Tuesday, the 26th, courtesy of Anchor Bay Entertainment. The clip is titled “Water Polo Attack.” The movie is produced by the legendary Roger Corman and Julie Corman. The feature stars Eric Balfour and Iva Hasperger. Check out the short press release below, and more importantly…the video clip! Continue reading ‘SyFy’s Dinoshark Plays Blu-ray Water Polo’

When I heard that there was a new Peter Weir movie that starred Ed Harris, Colin Farrell, and Mark Strong I was immediately interested. What made it even more appealing was when I heard that the The Way Back was also a prison escape movie which sealed the deal. I then discovered that our own Aaron Neuwirth had caught this movie in the theaters and his review only added to my anticipation for the movie. Weir has an incredible track record with movies such as Witness and Master and Commander, so I knew that had to be a pretty good movie especially with this kind of a plot. While this is a prison break movie up to a point, this is more of a celebration of the human spirit and its ability to endure even in the face of terrible odds. At least that’s what Todd Brown of Twitch Film is calling this movie. Over the weekend I shared the trailer with you all (see here) and now we are back for more. I’m excited to inform you of the launch of the two latest Stake Land character prequels (there are four in total) on Apple Trailers. These mini-vignettes, detailing the time leading up to the horrific events of the film, each provide a tantalizing glimpse into the lives of the Stake Land cast of characters. The two most recent installments are titled JEBEDIAH starring Michael Cerveris and directed by Larry Fessenden and WILLIE starring Sean Nelson and directed by the lovely Danielle Harris (listen to my audio interview with her here). To view both of these trailers click the link below. Continue reading ‘The American Horror Film of the Year is…Stake Land?’

Considered part of the Japanese new-wave of cinema, Pigs & Battle ships is Shôhei Imamura’s fifth film, and is a portrait of the wannabe-Yakuza subculture in the U.S. Navy occupied area of Yokosuka. It’s a chaotic tale of petty thugs, strong minded women, gangsters, and much more who are all battling for control over the pork trade in the Yokosuka coastal town. This special Dual Format Blu-ray/DVD will also contain Shôhei Imamura’s 1958 debut, but rarely seen, Stolen Desire. The Blu-ray format will certainly bring out all of the details in the rich black and white ‘Scope’ cinematography found in Pigs & Battleships. Pigs & Battleships will be released in the UK June 27th, 2011. Masters of Cinema will be releasing the French silent film classic Coeur Fidele on a Dual Format Blu-ray/DVD package this June. Coeur Fidele is the story of a barmaid who is continuously oppressed by her exploitative foster family that keep trying to push her into the arms of someone with questionable motives. Her heart, of course, already belongs to another. Masters of Cinema have gone to great care in assembling this Blu-ray package. There is a new remastered picture, many supplements, and a 44-page booklet which contains many pictures and notes on the production of the film. Coeur Fidele is French silent cinema at its best! I was really hoping that I would be getting Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I to review on Blu-ray because not being the biggest advocate of the franchise these past ten years, I wanted to see whether I still liked the film or if it was an off night for me when I saw it theatrically. And golly gee, was that a long sentence or what? Alright, I will try my best to constrain and rope in my thoughts as I proceed on here. Well, one thing’s for sure. I already spilled the beans. I am not a Harry Potter fan. I have never read the books, but many have told me that they are fantastic. And no, I have not taken very well to the films so far (#1 and #2 are sure fire cures for insomnia, in my opinion), but I was hoping just maybe, the seventh final two installments might be the charm. Who knows? Continue reading ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I (Blu-ray Review)’

I missed this one in the theater, but the same mistake won’t happen when it arrives on Blu-ray this June. Two of our reviewers really liked this one (see here and here) so I’m not going to let this one slip off my radar. Anyway, of course I am talking about the salesman comedy of the year Cedar Rapids. The film will make its Blu-ray debut with a Super Awesome Edition on June 21st. Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment assures me that you will be able to slam back a shot of cream sherry and dance with the tiger on June 21st. I guess I will have to watch the Blu-ray to find out what the heck they are talking about. Until then…here’s the press release! Continue reading ‘Take The Trip To ‘Cedar Rapids’ on Blu-ray’
