‘Super’ Sticks A Wrench Into Its Twisted, Darkly Comic Tale

So I don’t tend to write about my own process and circumstances when writing very often, but I am going to point out something about James Gunn’s film Super, which relates to me.  I was at a loss for a few days after seeing this film, before finally sitting down to write this review.  It could be related to how busy I have been, but really it has to do with what I thought about this film.  On one hand, it has a darkly comedic take on the story of an ordinary man who becomes a vigilante in an effort to fight crime, which is fairly entertaining, if a bit familiar for a premise these days.  On the other side of things, the film presents a wavering tone that balances these more comedic moments with some very uncomfortable and disturbing violence. ‘Hobo With A Shotgun’ Is Like Finding A Rose In The Dumpster

Back in 2007, in anticipation of the horror/exploitation double feature that was directors’ Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse, there was a contest held for others around the world to create their own exploitation film-themed movie trailer, which would be played at the Grindhouse premiere.  Canadian filmmaker Jason Eisner won the contest with his trailer for Hobo with a Shotgun.  Now, as Robert Rodriguez’s own fake trailer – Machete, has gone on to become a film of its own, Eisner also managed to make a full length feature film version of ‘Hobo’. As a result, Eisner has created a film that is, in some ways, more enjoyable than the other attempts at rejuvenating exploitation flicks.  Style, performances, and overall tone have all come together in the best ways possible that are suitable for a film about a bum going gun crazy. The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers: Seasons 1 & 2 (DVD Review)

I think there is something that is important to address in regards to this web series and the person involved in its creation – Jon M. Chu.  I am a fan of this writer/producer/director.  The name may not be familiar as of now to many, but I think he is quite talented when it comes to filming action, which could lead down an entertaining path for him in the future.  The twisted part of this statement is that all of his action direction has so far come in the form of dance related films.  Chu is responsible for Step Up 2: The Streets and Step Up 3D. Regardless of the opinions that some have of those films, the one thing I can stand behind is that the filmmaking involved in capturing the dance sequences is damn solid, which is why I was willing to embrace Chu’s personal project – The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers. Kill The Irishman on Blu-ray!

As many times as I was asked to see this film I reluctantly missed out on it in the theaters.  But now that I know I only have a short wait for the Blu-ray presentation I’m pretty sure I can hold out.  And I suppose, since I do live in Cleveland, I should really be able to get into this film.  I would think so.  Don’t you?  After all, Kill The Irishman is a crime action film that tracks the rise and fall of real-life Irish-American mobster Danny Greene in Cleveland during the 1970’s.  Starz/Anchor Bay has announced a June 14th Blu-ray release date for the mobster film.  If only my grandfather were still alive to see this one.  I have a strong premonition that he would like it.  The Jonathan Hensleigh directed film stars Ray Stevenson, Vincent D’Onofrio, Val Kilmer and Christopher Walken. Porcelain Black Shows Us What Rock N Roll Looks Like

Alright.  Here’s the conundrum I face.  Do I or don’t I?  When it comes to discovering new talent I tend to believe whatever I like will go on to become the newest fad.  Who doesn’t like to think that way?  Sometimes it’s a blessing and sometimes it’s a curse in disguise.  My wife thinks I’m full of it, but what does she know.  I aksed my fellow writer Gerard Iribe today if he would mind if I did a very short piece on my latest musical find.  He said sure…go for it.  I know, right out of the gate, I will be blasted with Burlesque-like insults, but quite frankly, I don’t bleeping care.  Like my leading lady within this piece shows us, “This Is What Rock N Roll Looks Like.” Continue reading ‘Porcelain Black Shows Us What Rock N Roll Looks Like’

The Secret of Nimh (Blu-ray Review)

For years, Don Bluth was one of Disney’s chief animators and worked on many of their classic movies before taking off on his own for a short period before returning to the studio for a couple of years before leaving again.  With Gary Goldman and John Pomeroy, he founded Don Bluth Productions and released the cartoon short “Banjo the Woodpile Cat,” and then the animated segment for Xanadu.  He also provided the animation for the “Dragon’s Lair” and “Space Ace” video-games.  When a group of former Disney executives formed a production company called Aurora Productions, they funded what many people consider to be Bluth’s masterpiece – The Secret of Nimh. Teen Wolf (Blu-ray Review)

I’ve always loved the 80’s whether it’s the music or the movies, but I could do without a lot of the fashion.  1985 was a good year for movies when you consider that The Goonies, The Breakfast Club, Rocky IV, Witness, Fletch, A View to a Kill, Young Sherlock Holmes, and more came out that year. Teen Wolf was wisely released after Back to the Future, which turned out to be the biggest movie of the year. That strategy allowed it to capitalize on Michael J. Fox’s huge success and gave this small movie more box office receipts than expected. Teen Wolf is a light-hearted comedy that is powered solely through the superb star power and charisma of Michael J. Fox. Continue reading ‘Teen Wolf (Blu-ray Review)’

Rory Gallagher: Irish Tour ’74 (Blu-ray Review)

I’m always up for new discoveries when it comes to music and musicians.  Being a hard rock aficionado and guitar geek, why is it that I had never heard of Rory Gallagher?  In fact the whole staff at Why So Blu hadn’t heard of him.  I decided to go ahead and venture into unexplored territory with the Rory Gallagher: Irish Tour ’74 Blu-ray.  In a sense you really can’t go wrong when some of the greatest living guitar legends of all time like Slash, Brian  May, Glenn Tipton, and The Edge, cite Gallagher as a major influence in their playing of the guitar.  That’s all I needed to know before I dove into the Blu-ray.  Continue reading ‘Rory Gallagher: Irish Tour ’74 (Blu-ray Review)’

Deadly Little ‘Hanna’ Delivers Style and Thrills

There is a lengthy, one-take sequence in the middle of Hanna that is a showcase for clever camera work, a solid central performance, intrigue, and a climactic action sequence that delivers on stylish, visceral impact.  All of the descriptors for this scene can be used to describe Hanna as a whole, with another huge shout out going to the fantastic and nontraditional score composed by The Chemical Brothers. Fiddler on the Roof – 40th Anniversary Edition (Blu-ray Review)

There have been a lot of Broadway plays that have made the transition to the big screen, but none seem as unlikely as Fiddler on the Roof.  The play itself was a risky endeavor since many felt that the story of a milkman and his family set in the 1900s in Russia wouldn’t have mainstream appeal. It ended up being the longest running play in history with a ten year run until it was beaten by GreaseContinue reading ‘Fiddler on the Roof – 40th Anniversary Edition (Blu-ray Review)’
