One of the most anticipated and well received documentaries of  2010 is Charles Ferguson’s Inside Job. If you’re curious as to how this global recession all started then you don’t need to go anywhere else.  Inside Job chronicles the events that led to a $20 TRILLION global financial crisis.  Yes, I said TRILLION.  Strap yourself in, hold on tight, because it’s going to be a wild and bumpy ride!  Continue reading ‘Inside Job (Blu-ray Review)’

Oscars 2011 Animated Features

It’s Thursday night at the Academy and that means time to honor the nominees for Best Animated Feature Film.  This year there were three nominees for Best Animated Picture – Feature Length: Toy Story 3, How to Train you Dragon and The Illusionist. Talking with Tom Sito, Animator and Host for the evening, he gave us some interesting trivia.  Tom explained that the award for Best Animated Feature has only been around for ten years, starting in 2001.  You may ask why they didn’t have the category sooner, and the answer is one that each of our honored guests felt passionate about, “animated feature films are not a genre-they are a medium.” Continue reading ‘Oscars 2011 Animated Features’

Unstoppable (Blu-ray Review)

Taking a look at Director Tony Scott’s filmography, it’s easy to see that he loves movies about vehicles and that he has a deep appreciation for speed.  Top Gun, Days of Thunder, Crimson Tide, and The Taking of Pelham 123, represent just a few of his earlier efforts.  Now he’s back with another train movie called Unstoppable with Denzel Washington and Chris Pine.  Unstoppable is based on a real life incident about a runaway unmanned train and the efforts made to stop it. Dungeons & Dragons/Dungeons & Dragons – Wrath of the Dragon God (Blu-ray Review)

Dungeons & Dragons is a powerful brand.  Even those that haven’t held their breath as they rolled a twenty-sided die have at the very least heard of it.  With the global awareness of the brand, one would think that selling a movie based on the franchise would be an easy sell but it took a long time to reach the big screen.  Even with a built in audience ready and eager for a movie, it still took almost thirty years for that to happen. Continue reading ‘Dungeons & Dragons/Dungeons & Dragons – Wrath of the Dragon God (Blu-ray Review)’

Oscars 2011 Documentaries

Wednesday was a tough one in L.A.  Locals were bundled up in their winter coats on this frigid sixty degree day!  We Midwesterners though, were in shorts and hoodies, enjoying the warmth and sunlight for the one brief week we’ll be here.  After watching a film shoot just outside the hotel, we headed off to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the Documentary Features reception and screening.  I arrived on time and quickly found a great spot in the press row, right at the end! Continue reading ‘Oscars 2011 Documentaries’

Oscars 2011 Shorts!

After a five hour road trip, we arrived in Los Angeles to start our “real” Oscars coverage.  The first event on our schedule was the Shorts! reception at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.  Although we’ve attended several events at the Academy headquarters, it’s still quite a thrill to push past the hundreds of attendees lined up outside and take our place among the media inside the building. Vanquisher Available on Blu-ray and DVD March 8

I love my low budget DTV genre films.  When I got this bit of news it put a smile on my face.  Why?  It’s a typical covert operative betrayal scenario with our lovely heroine who has come back to face unspeakable odds and to put the wrong things right.  I love it!  The eye candy doesn’t hurt either.  Magnolia Films under their Magnet banner will be releasing Vanquisher on Blu-ray and DVD on March 8th.  Continue reading ‘Vanquisher Available on Blu-ray and DVD March 8’

SKYLINE Arrives on Blu-ray March 22!

I didn’t get a chance to see this in the theaters but you can read my fellow Why So Blu reviewer Aaron Neuwirth’s review here.  I’m always up for some human vs. alien fighting though so I’m curious to see how it turns out myself.  I know that both this movie and the Battle: Los Angeles movie’s trailers battled it out during the last Comic-Con leaving people in both camps excited about which one they liked the best. Continue reading ‘SKYLINE Arrives on Blu-ray March 22!’

AMC’s ‘Mad Men’ Return to Blu-ray This March!

Bambi: Diamond Edition (Blu-ray Review)

This classic movie is Walt Disney’s fifth full-length animated film and was based on based on Felix Salten’s book Bambi – A Life in the Woods.  It was originally going to be Disney’s second release but Walt’s desire for realism delayed the movie considerably.  The movie was finally released in 1942 and has finally gotten its turn for an exhaustive restoration and a release in high definition.

On Our Way to the Oscars!

Well, on Monday morning, we hit the skies flying to Las Vegas to prepare to cover the 2011 Oscars.  It doesn’t seem possible that this will be our third year covering the Oscars.  Again this year, I am permitted to cover the progress of the Red Carpet until Saturday night, but after that, I have to hang up my video camera.  Tomorrow, we’ll post another video story with clips from the co-hosts of this year’s Oscar telecast, Anne Hathaway and James Franco.  Tomorrow night, we’ll make our first visit to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the Shorts! screening and reception. Continue reading ‘On Our Way to the Oscars!’

Robert Rodriguez Presents “The Black Mamba”

I’m not a big sports fan, but when it comes to Robert Rodriguez and his many projects, that’s a totally different story.  Nike and Robert Rodriguez present Kobe Bryant (yes, Kobe Bryant) in The Black Mamba. I initially found out about this when our very own Aaron Neuwirth sent me the teaser trailer a couple of months ago.  I thought it looked great then and think it looks great now.  This is the full length short film of The Black Mamba which clocks in at a little over five minutes.  Check it out and enjoy!  Continue reading ‘Robert Rodriguez Presents “The Black Mamba”’

The Walking Dead: First Season (Blu-ray Review)

Before I begin, I wanted to give a big shout out to my main man, Gregg Senko, who is recovering from some pretty invasive shoulder surgery last week.  Gregg was originally supposed to review this title, but due to his current status of not being able to operate heavy machinery, the torch was passed onto me.  I hope I make you proud Gregg.  You see, in many ways, I hold Gregg personally responsible for discovering The Walking Dead, in my life.  During Comic-Con 2010, he excitedly texted me that he had just met Robert Kirkman and that he gave our original screenplay to him. Continue reading ‘The Walking Dead: First Season (Blu-ray Review)’

‘Cedar Rapids’ Is Charming and “Super Awesome!”

Sometimes you can tell a lot from how good a comedy can be simply by the names of your main characters.  Standard, ho-hum comedies may go for simplicity with names like John or Jane without mention of a last name.  Other comedies like to have fun with all of the details, like this film for example.  It is not enough that Cedar Rapids has people named Tim Lippe and Dean Ziegler; it has to go farther and make sure we know all the nicknames their friends give to them and repeat them enough that we find them to be memorable.
