John Carpenter Directs “DARKCHYLDE”

We are a little late on this story, but better late than never, right?  While I was in Mexico a couple of months back,  this story happen to flash through my screen and brought a big fat smile to my face.  It said that horror master John Carpenter would be directing Randy Queen’s Darkchylde! I was in movie heaven!  In addition to the good news, it was also confirmed that WETA Workshop would come aboard and handle the visual and creature make-up effects.  WETA even produced a few minutes worth of test footage in a studio with Randy Queen supervising it.  John Carpenter’s Darkchylde should rock hard!  Continue reading ‘John Carpenter Directs “DARKCHYLDE”’

Sundance Selects presents KABOOM!

From independent film maker Gregg Araki (The Doom Generation and Nowhere) comes his most ambitious film yet.  KABOOM! If that title isn’t catchy then I don’t know what is.  From just looking at the trailer, one would think it’s a comedy, which did have me laughing, but then switches gears and borders on being a thriller and horror film.  Gregg Araki is known for making some trippy films in general, but KABOOM seems to be his most ambitious project yet.  Speaking of which, we do need to see some Gregg Araki films on Blu-ray soon!   Continue reading ‘Sundance Selects presents KABOOM!’

In the UK .  It’s a start.  Warner Brothers has acquired the UK rights to release the latest horror film from horror master John Carpenter.  It’s been ten years since John Carpenter released a film theatrically.  That film was John Carpenter’s Ghosts of Mars which has gone on to become a cult hit.  John Carpenter’s The Ward features some young meat…I mean young talent for the grinder.  The Ward is scheduled to open in the UK on January 21st.  The MASTER of horror is back!  You know I’ll be importing the Blu-ray! Ready to be a Super Hero? DC Universe Online (Game Review)

I think a lot of people (especially guys) dream of being a superhero and got our fix through comics, movies, or videogames. I grew up on a steady diet of DC and Marvel comics and sat through countless iterations of Batman (the 60s show, guest starring on Scooby Doo, etc.) and the SuperFriends. I know I am dating myself but I bet there’s a lot of you that did the same thing.

El Mariachi/Desperado (Blu-ray Review)

The Robert Rodriguez library on Blu-ray continues to expand.  Columbia Pictures proudly present: the first two films in the Robert Rodriguez “Mexican” trilogy.  It’s only fitting that a real Mexican was tasked with (okay I volunteered) to review the Rodriguez Mariachi series on Blu-ray.  Once again, this will be a cumulative review, but I will grade the films as a whole.  Let’s get started. Vamos! Continue reading ‘El Mariachi/Desperado (Blu-ray Review)’

Once Upon A Time In Mexico (Blu-ray Review)

In our previous adventures with our famed guitarista we had several revenge and closure story arcs to abide by.  With Once Upon A Time In Mexico we have come full circle.  Robert Rodriguez pulled a Sergio Leone.  This was to be Rodriguez’s The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. Was Robert Rodriguez successful?  I suggest you read on and find out.  Once Upon A Time In Mexico is the final film in the Robert Rodriguez “Mexican” trilogy. Top Shot Season One (DVD Review)

As a general rule, I hate all reality TV shows.  All of the manufactured drama, the display of the worst human behavior, and the formulaic presentation always makes me cringe and I do my best to avoid it.  When I was offered this show to review, I almost reflexively said no until I actually looked into it.

The show is a sharp-shooting competition that uses weapons from across history from modern day automatics to longbows and slingshots. Continue reading ‘Top Shot Season One (DVD Review)’

Psychosis (DVD Review)

Being a long time fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, I was excited to see the new horror movie with Charisma Carpenter (who had played Cordelia Chase in those shows).  It seemed to take forever for the movie to arrive but when it did, I was sad to see that the DVD case was broken and the movie was sliding around in its case. I worried that the disc might have been scratched or broken.   The disc turned out to be ok but I should have taken the broken case as a premonition.  Continue reading ‘Psychosis (DVD Review)’

UNSTOPPABLE Races to Blu-ray February 15th!

Tony Scott’s UNSTOPPABLE arrives this Frbruary 15th and I’m excited to see it since I missed it in the theaters.  If you’d like, you can read Aaron Neuwirth’s review for the movie here.  Tony Scott usually delivers the goods, but I wish he would try something other than his usual hyper-kinetic style of shooting although I heard that it serves this movie well.  No matter what, you can’t go wrong with this cast since it stars Denzel Washington, Chris Pine, and Rosario Dawson among others. ‘The Green Hornet’ Strikes, But It’s Not Quite A Thrilling Adventure

When it was announced that Seth Rogen would be starring as the Green Hornet, many first asked, “Wait, who’s the Green Hornet?”  The second thing asked was, “So he’s kind of like The Shadow…wait, who’s The Shadow?”  But finally, people asked, “Wait, Seth Rogen is going to play a superhero?”  And so he was, and now, some time later, the time of The Green Hornet is finally upon us. ‘The Incredibles’ Will Look “Incredible” on Blu-ray

Now here’s a Blu-ray animated release I am very excited about.  The Disney/Buena Vista/Pixar superhero smash hit, The Incredibles, has been officially announced for Blu-ray on April 12th.  The animated film features a voice cast consisting of Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Jason Lee and the man with the plan, Samuel L. Jackson.  There’s no word on the technical specs or what features will be included, but I can tell you the following.  It will be a 4-disc Blu-ray set consisting of 2 Blu-ray discs, a DVD and a Digital Copy of the film. Sofia Coppola’s Latest Will Either Take You ‘Somewhere’ or Nowhere

Recommending a film like writer/director Sofia Coppola’s latest feature, Somewhere, comes with a certain kind of note:  as a person well traveled in various types of theatrical features, I found a lot to appreciate in this film; however, the way that it has been assembled and what it has to offer will most likely appeal more to those with a slant towards arthouse-type cinema and more obscure features.  I am not a fan of so specifically dropping a film into a certain category and only recommending certain people to see it, but that being said, if you know about this film already or are familiar with Coppola’s previous work, you probably know what you would be getting yourself into. Piranha (Blu-ray Review)

I have never seen the original 1978 Piranha film, but much to my surprise, my wife has.  She has seen it many times as she told me.  I don’t know.  It must be a cultural thing.  So anyway, I guess that’s why she was so anxious to check this one out in the theater many months ago.   I have to say, I was very curious too.  I had little interest in the 3-D aspect of it, but I was amazed at the mostly positive critical responses the film was garnering after its first day of release.  I just had to check it out.  And so I did.  I was not ready for what I was about to experience…the most fun I had at the theater all summer long. The King’s Speech Speaks Volumes

Normally, we here at Why So Blu deliver up-to-date reviews and information the day of or after a film hits theaters.  It’s not typical that we discuss a film that is a few weeks old.  Take for instance The King’s Speech.  This film was released in late November, but after seeing it today, it was just far too exceptional to leave it off our list of content.  Starring Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter, and Geoffrey Rush, the trio take part what would have been my #1 film of 2010 had I seen it before year’s end.  Continue reading ‘The King’s Speech Speaks Volumes’

From Walking Dead to Big Lizard

Robert Kirkman is a busy man.  That, my friends, is the understatement of 2011.  That’s like saying Michael Jordan was good at basketball.  The Image Comics executive and force behind the Image-imprint known as SkyBound Comics, has churned out idea after idea and has worked alongside many an artist on his creative journeys thus far, this time teaming up with pal Jason Howard on their latest comic book creation.

The Universe – Season 5 (Blu-ray Review)

I recently reviewed an episode that was was excerpted from this season five set, The Universe – 7 Wonders of the Solar System in 3D which you can read here, and this is the review for the complete season set.  The Universe does a great job covering many aspects of science and future possibilities and making it accessible for average viewers.  This two disc set contains all eight episodes that total 376 minutes of viewing time.
