…for the most part, but we’ll get to that in a moment. Spawned originally from writer Mark Millar and Marvel artist John Romita Jr., Kick-Ass made its presence known to the mainstream as a comic book in February of 2008. Going under the label of Icon Comics, Kick-Ass secured a cult-following to a loyal fanbase, though it hadn’t yet reached a level of grand success. Somehow, somewhere along the line, someone picked up on the concept and said, “Hey, let’s make this a movie.” Can you say ‘gamble’? Continue reading ‘Kick-Ass Lives Up To Its Name’

I went into Wednesday night’s screening of Death at a Funeral with a bad attitude. My day was lackluster. It was one of those days you just simply eek through life and would rather forget. So long story short, I went into the preview screening already expecting to hate it. That’s always a bad thing in my world, but in the film critic business, the results can vary. How you ask? Let’s put it this way. What if you were forced to watch something against your will and you ultimately end up liking it? Ordinarily, that’s a good thing. I’m on a roll! In one of my last reviews I mentioned that there were certain films I had no desire to see in my entire life. The Pink Panther 2 was one of those films. You gotta do what you gotta do. In my defense, I love the animated series, considering it’s now an almost 50 year show. Them, going live action with it made me cringe, but lessened somewhat when seeing that Steve Martin actually contributed to the screenplay. I like Steve Martin’s writing. Anyways, enough bantering, let’s get to the review. Continue reading ‘The Pink Panther 2 (Blu-ray Review)’

After seeing the trailer for Night at the Museum in theaters a few years ago, I said to myself, “wow, this looks completely, and utterly unwatchable.” I was prepared to go my whole life without giving this film a chance. Then of course, I became a film reviewer, and I had to play the part of the objective (non-judgmental) reviewer. The opportunity presented itself, and I would have to put aside my preconceived notions about films that look like garbage. Continue reading ‘Night at the Museum (Blu-ray Review)’

There is one reason why The Thomas Crown Affair will always be a bit memorable to me. It was the very first dvd I ever bought, soon followed by Metallica’s Cunning Stunts and an eventual library that is now dwarfed by my ever-growing Blu-ray collection. Okay, so that’s some knowledge few probably care about so let’s get down to it. Another reason why this film is memorable is because it’s just so darn clever and simply entertaining. Here’s a movie from my youth that I definitely will not be passing up on the Blu-ray format this June. When I first heard rumors of this title last year I was as giddy as a school boy. Now those rumores have been crushed and have been made a reality. Showgirls: 15th Anniversary Sinsational Edition arrives on Blu-rauy June 15th. Elizabeth Berkley stars in Paul Verhoeven’s controversial camp classic, which will obviously be celebrating 15 years this year. Continue reading ‘Showgirls: 15th Anniversary Sinsational Edition’

Want to make this a Date Night? Sure, why not? Steve Carell and ex-SNL veteran Tina Fey make a great couple who just want to have a peaceful night out, but just can’t seem to get a break. These comical actors have a gift for improvisation and the ability to be funny without appearing to be trying, but do their comedic talents fit in with the action subplot? Inquiring minds want to know! Check out my video review below to find out! Continue reading ‘Make This a Date Night’

I never was a big Resident Evil fan. I never even played the original video games. It took a woman at work to convince me to give them another try. So like usual, I fell in love with them upon my second viewing. My wife was nice enough to pick up the trilogy Blu-ray set 2 years ago for me on Valentine’s Day. They are not the greatest movies by any standards, but now and then everyone needs to view a mindless zombie a$$-kicking movie to help escape the stress of everyday life. Marvel’s Elektra sparkles on Blu-ray this May. Or at least I hope it does. I have to admit, as much as a let down as this movie initially was, it’s still a guilty pleasure of mine. Jennifer Garner looks hot reprising her role as Elektra and the inclusion of this being a Director’s Cut on Blu-ray sounds a bit promising. At least to me it does. My pre-order has already been filled. Has yours? Why wait? There’s never been a better time to own Elektra than on the format of choice…Blu-ray. My first introduction to the pot-smoking comedians, Cheech and Chong, was some time in the mid 1980’s. By a miracle of the technology gods, my father held onto a working 8-track player. Knowing only records and your typical small cassettes up to that point, I grabbed one of the remaining 8-track tapes and proceeded to put it in the player. Before I even hit play, I focused my attention on forcing the tape further into the player. Hey, what was I supposed to do? Continue reading ‘Cheech & Chong’s Hey Watch This (Blu-ray Review)’

I got word yesterday that the first decent theatrical movie I saw this year (full review here) is making its debut on the Blu-ray format in May. Why did I like it? I’m not sure. I’m sure it had a little something to do with Jessica Alba, but at the same time it was the classic formula that just works on a holiday weekend and like a chump I fell for it. Is it the best of 2010? Hell no. But it was a start. Anyway, Warner Brothers will be bringing the romantic comedy starring everyone that is famous in Hollywood right now to Blu-ray on May 18th. Continue reading ‘Celebrate Valentine’s Day in May on Blu-ray!’

I must admit that I am quite smitten by the Starz original series Spartacus: Blood and Sand. So smitten am I that I actually took time from my busy schedule on Easter Sunday to reach out to their PR people and express how much my wife and I have enjoyed the Friday night programming this winter/spring. You see, for me to take time out of my hectic schedule to do something as daunting as this means that I really like it. As my wife will attest to, when I like something I put all my passion and fever behind it and nothing else truly matters. Continue reading ‘Starz Wraps Up 1st Season of “SPARTACUS: BLOOD & SAND”’

On the heels of the very successful Troy, Wolfgang Peterson brings us what could be his third entry into his “water” trilogy. Das Boot, The Prefect Storm, and now Poseidon. Yes, THAT Poseidon. No, it’s not the Greek god from Clash of the Titans. It’s a remake…another one. I think you know where this is going. So let’s not waste anymore time… Continue reading ‘Poseidon (Blu-ray Review)’
