I admit to being a fan of only two Tom Cruise films. The first being the War of the Worlds remake (that bass will peel the paint off your walls) and the science-fiction action thriller Minority Report. The latter just so happened to be announced for the Blu-ray format yesterday and I couldn’t be happier with the news. Paramount Home Entertainment has issued a April 20th release date for Minority Report on the Blu-ray format. Continue reading ‘Blu-ray Finds Itself on the Minority Report’

Here’s one I unfortunately did not catch in the theaters, but our Gregg Senko did. Brothers comes highly recommended from him (see here), so I think I will give it a try the second time around on the Blu-ray format. Just my luck as Lionsgate has announced a March 23rd release date for the film on the Blu-ray format. The film features an all-star cast including Toby Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman and more. Continue reading ‘Toby Maguire’s Brothers Reunite on Blu-ray!’

If you love the attire and mediocre acting of 1980’s then, you will love Fame. I watched this movie waiting patiently for the good song and dance numbers but sadly they never came. The choreography was absolutely terrible along with the dancers. Even the theme song number in the street was a major disappointment. It looked like a bunch of teenagers in bad outfits having simultaneous spasms all over the vehicles. Continue reading ‘Fame – 1980 (Blu-ray Review)’

Having enjoyed myself so much at Celebration 3 and being the big Star Wars fan that I am I just had to put a plug in about Celebration V landing this summer in Orlando, FL. One way or another Why So Blu will have some coverage from down there. We were actually sitting around talking about this event today and it made me think about how much of a blast I had at C3. I hope you are reading this Ed Henry. The event will take place at the Orange County Convention Center August 12-15. Continue reading ‘The Force is Strong at Star Wars Celebration V’

Let the games begin! No, I’m not referring to the upcoming Winter Olympics. Rather, those were the words that rang through my mind as we entered 2010. I looked forward with cinematic excitement as the list of releases brought child-like excitement to my eyes. Up to the halfway mark of 2009, I was beginning to wonder if I would ever be able to fill out my top-10 list for movies of the year. Now granted, we’re not even out of January yet, but I still do not have anything in mind to throw on that list for 2010. Continue reading ‘Legion a Sinful Mess’

We just received a press release from IDW Publishing that we thought was interesting enough to pass along to our readers. What is From The Ashes? I have no idea, but after reading about it I am intrigued to say the least. The graphic novel is published by the same people who brought us 30 Days of Night, another favorite of ours. So why not? Let’s give them the floor. Check out the full press release below from IDW about their newest upcoming graphic novel From The Ashes by Bob Fingerman. Tomorrow, January 22nd, marks the inaugural episode of the much anticipated Spartacus: Blood and Sand on the Starz Network. Taking place in the gladiatorial times of ancient Rome, we follow the life of a loving husband and cunning warrior who is bestowed the moniker of ‘Spartacus.’ It’s a difficult task to educate the inevitable fans on the show without giving too much away but if you enjoyed the film 300, you will certainly fall into a world of engrossment when watching Spartacus: Blood and Sand. What’s Fantastic Mr. Fox you might ask? Well acccording to our friend Bob it is an absolutely fantastic movie. The movie has graced over 150 top ten lists as it has earned 3 Annie Anward nominations, awarded as a Best Animated Feature winner by over 7 critics associations and nominated for the Best Animated Feature by the Golden Globe, Critic’s Choice and Producer’s Guild of America. That’s a pretty impressive resume for a movie I have not seen as of yet. Continue reading ‘Mr. Fox is Fantastic on Blu-ray!’

Commercials for The Lovely Bones are promoting the movie as a supernatural murder-mystery where a teenage girl who is killed helps her father solve the crime from the after life. It’s understandable why Paramount and DreamWorks SKG decided to market the movie, based on the 2002 novel of the same name by Alice Sebold, this way since it summarizes the story in a way that can be understood in 60 seconds or less. I know I can’t speak for everyone, but I know for sure that I am not a proponent off spending one-quarter the value of my A/V equipment on expensive cables. That same philosophy of mine especially applies towards the magical must-have HDMI cable and all its marketed flavors it supposedly comes in. So what’s the real deal with picking an HDMI cable out? Give me a few moments of your time and I’ll give you my 2 cents on the matter. Continue reading ‘HDMI 101: The Truth About HDMI Cables’

James Cameron’s Avatar continues to blow the doors off of the competition at movie theaters around the globe. The film presents a world of incredible sights and ingenuity while developing a conflict between man and nature. The world of Pandora is nothing less than spectacular and love or hate the film, that seems to be one aspect that both sides seem to agree on. It is also an aspect that seems to be causing some anguish on at least a handful of movie-goers. Continue reading ‘Avatar the Therapist’

If you watch any television at all, you’ve no doubt seen the Netflix ads in which they promote their streaming video service. As long as you have one of the company’s “unlimited” DVD or Blu-ray rental memberships, you have access to a library of around 17,000 movies, TV shows and concerts to watch on demand at no additional cost, and with no limits on the amount of streaming programming. For what seemed to be a once strong then dormant title, it appears that Dark Horse has dusted off the idea vault for the Predator race. Available for sale now, Aliens vs. Predator: Three World War (issue #1) recently arrived in stores with a dramatic fold-out cover, courtesy of Raymond Swanland. The book’s artwork is softly detailed with a bout of writing that accurately rejuvinates life into the hallowed character, Machiko Noguchi. Continue reading ‘AVP: Three World War’

Most of my movie-loving friends have already seen Boogie Nights while I had not. Considering the film had as much popularity as it did and it’s well over a decade old now, it was high time I sat down for a watch of this flick. I heard fragments of the content here and there so being the red-blooded male that I am, of course my interest was peaked. But even a hot, scantly clad (or no clad) woman is not enough in and of itself to make a film good. How is the acting, the plot, the climax, the believability? At last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Director Terry Gilliam (Monty Python and the Holy Grail) appeared with actor Verne Troyer to promote the completed production of The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. The film stars acting legend Christopher Plummer as Dr. Parnassus, Lily Cole as his daughter (Valentina), Verne Troyer as Percy, Andrew Garfield as Anton, Tom Waits as Mr. Nick (aka the devil himself) and the late, great Heath Ledger as Tony. Sandra Bullock seems to be effective in the comedic role, but why? Is it the direction she’s given? Is it the script she memorizes? Sure, one or both of those play a role in her success in these types of films, but how about her God-given comedic timing? She is truly underestimated from a critic standpoint in regard to this attribute though her films’ successes at the box office validate it. Now throw in Bradley Cooper, Thomas Haden Church and Ken Jeong and you’ll get to know All About Steve. Continue reading ‘All About Steve (Blu-ray Review)’

I’m not sure what everyone’s problem is with this film. I have previously been lambasted for openly writing my feelings about how much I liked Fame during its theatrical run and I have seen and heard nothing but pessimistic and repugnant comments from the critical community. Am I the only one out there who sees the beauty, faith and inspiration that can be drawn from the film? Should I be concerned or seriously ponder anymore why I thought Fame was one of the better movies of 2009? Continue reading ‘Fame (Blu-ray Review)’
