You know life is really hard when you have to labor an hour of your time helping your photographer arrange and take pictures of 17 scantily clad metal bikini wearing girls. Such was the painful work I suffered through on Friday, July 24th at the Comic-Con exhibit hall booths of Gentle Giant and Lucasfilm. I am being facetious, but of course. I actually somewhat enjoyed myself! Continue reading ‘Comic-Con 2009 Update #15 – The Leia’s Metal Bikini Photo Shoot’

There was a lot of things going on in the world of Blu-ray today. First off is an announcement from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, which set a November 17th Blu-ray release date for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: A Very Sunny Christmas. Fox also announced plans to bring the 1997 Robert Downey Jr. film Two Girls and a Guy to the Blu-ray format on November 3rd. Universal Studios also slammed the world of Hi-Def media with two Blu-ray announcements today. First, they declared a October 20th release date for Kevin Costner’s Waterworld and October 13th date for the Will Ferrell comedy Land of the Lost. Continue reading ‘The Daily Blu…August 11, 2009’

I am excited! Are you excited? Why am I excited? Well I am excited because in less than a month from now the sequel to one of the best Blu-rays I own, Crank, will be spinning in my Playstation 3 drive and I will be able to experience Crank 2 High Voltage in all its High-Definition glory. Now do you see why am I excited? Whether you like the Crank franchise or not, there is no denying that the first film, shot exclusively with High-Definition cameras, looks absolutely stunning on Blu-ray. I remember introducing my one friend to Blu-ray with that title and they said they had vibrant dreams all night long that night on how clearly they could see Jason Statham’s stubble on his chin. There’s not too much news to report on today. It’s been a pretty quiet Monday. I guess the big news is that Warner has revealed a a November 17th release date for their Gone With The Wind: 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Edition on Blu-ray. And the only other news I have to report on today is that of a Blu-ray release date for the Jack Black and Michael Cera comedy, Year One. Sony says to expect an October 6th release date for an Unrated/Rated Blu-ray edition. That’s it for today. Make sure to check back tomorrow!

I still remember the event well. I was about four or five years old. The year was 1982. I was with my parents at a local mall and we took a stroll through Sears. There, in front of me, was my very first exposure to G.I. Joe action figures. My mom said I could have just one so I had to make the decision count as this guy would eventually be fighting endless battles under beds, on top of dressers and over the rough terrain of living room carpet. The guy dressed all in black grabbed my attention first. Snake Eyes would be the first Joe figure I would own. Continue reading ‘Gregg’s Reflection on G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra’

Making his Comic-Con debut in 2009 was accomplished writer and director, Terry Gilliam. Not familiar with his work? I’d bet the farm that you are so let me connect the dots. Gilliam has worked on such films as Life of Brian, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and what will go down in film history as one of the most popular comedies of all time, Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The Minnesota native was in San Diego to talk about the release of his latest work, The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. Well I said I would not do it, but I did! I got my hopes up before seeing G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Was I disappointed? Heck no! I sat there like a carefree kid in a candy store waiting for the next trip down memory lane as I saw all the action figures of my childhood come to life before my eyes on the big screen. Although, who would have ever known that The Baroness and Scarlett would have ever looked so good brought to life? We’ll get to that in a moment. Sorry for getting this posted so late. I just got back from a DLP showing of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. I’ll have more about that later! In late breaking Blu-ray news Warner announced they will bring the HBO mini-series Rome: The Complete Series to Blu-ray on November 17th. The Blu-ray set will span across 10 Blu-ray discs and will feature 1080P video and DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio surround sound. Warner also announced that the upcoming Blu-ray Digibook of Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory will be released on October 6th instead of October 20th. First off, the studio sent a bunch of stuff to hand out on opening night. Our theater just had four posters so they had four trivia questions for the crowd. I was the first one to answer the second question which was “what is Storm Shadow’s real first name?” The answer is Tommy. So I won a poster which I already have because my brother got me one from his theater. Some had just one character but I got two copies of the one with all the characters on it…Joe’s on bottom and Cobra’s on top. Continue reading ‘Ricki’s Midnight Screening of G.I. Another major attraction at this year’s Comic-Con was G4’s Attack of the Show booth. I’m sure its popularity had nothing to do with the beautiful host and Playboy covergirl, Olivia Munn, always hanging around the booth. I can honestly attest to never seeing the show, however I now see what the appeal is, especially to the young male audience. Olivia earned the crowd’s attention no matter where she was at, and trust me, she was everywhere there. She could be seen participating in panels like the official Lucasfilm panel – Star Wars Spectacular!, signing autographs in the autograph alley, giving away free movie passes and even broadcasting live from the G4 booth. Today is going to be a real quick one. There are two topics of discussion on my dinner plate today. First off, Fox Home Entertainment has announced that it is introducing a new BD-Live technology, that is tied to the popular movie database IMDB.com, with the Blu-ray release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The new technology is being called “Live Lookup” and it will allow viewers to gain access to the IMDB site via BD-Live to access all things Wolverine. Continue reading ‘The Daily Blu…August 6, 2009’

505 Games was nice enough to share with us some press release materials on their latest Playstation 3 game, IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey, which comes out this September. The game allows players to particpate in some of the most famous military campaigns of WWII in large-scale aerial combat over ground-based military operations. As pilots, gamers can battle across a range of missions through six major WWII battles – The Battle of Britain, Stalingard, Berlin, Sicily, the Battle of the Bulge and Korsun. We have a fair share of Blu-ray news to report on today. Probably the most exciting news of the day, for me, is the potential release date of October 6th for the Warner Bros. Blu-ray of Michael Dougherty’s Trick ‘r Treat. Also, there is a very strong rumor that Warner plans to release 2009’s Orphan on October 27th. Amazingly, there is also a release date buzzing around for the Blu-ray release of a film that has not even hit the theatres yet. New Line has tentatively scheduled a December 22nd Blu-ray release date for The Final Destination. Continue reading ‘The Daily Blu…August 5, 2009’

Hailed as one of the greatest Halloween films of the past 30 years is a pretty significant accomplishment for a movie that has never been released theatrically. If you were one of the lucky ones admitted into Ballroom 20 at Comic-Con on July 23rd, then you already know the appeal Trick ‘r Treat will have on the countless number of horror fans upon its eventual home video release. Well it was another slow day in Blu-ray news, but probably the saddest news was an email I received from Amazon notifying me that the Snakes on a Plane Blu-ray release has been pushed back to September 29th from its original date of September 8th. In other news, New Lines will release Secondhand Lions, starring Michael Caine, Robert Duvall and Haley Joel Osment on Blu-ray December 1st. E1 Entertainment has announced a Rob Thomas concert Blu-ray for October. Soundstage: Rob Thomas – Live at Red Rocks will be released on October 6th. Continue reading ‘The Daily Blu…August 4, 2009’

Today was a pretty slow day in the Blu-ray news front. Let’s see I got about 4 announcements to make. First off, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced the Assassination of a High School President on Blu-ray for October 6th. The comedy, which never had a theatrical release, stars Mischa Barton, Reece Daniel Thompson and Bruce Willis. Heavy hitters’ Sony Pictures has also announced an October 13th Blu-ray release date for Adoration. The previously scheduled Warner Brothers’ National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation: Ultimate Collector’s Edition for Blu-ray has been pushed back a week from its October 27th release date. The tagline says it all. “Don’t fear the end of the world. Fear what happens next.” All right, so maybe it does not, but while I found myself waiting in Hall H for the Kick Ass panel I was treated to a sneak preview of clips showcasing Paul Anderson’s upcoming film Pandorum. It kind of feels like Resident Evil in space if I had to sum it up in one sentence. Paul Anderson always knows how to please sci-fi action junkies so I am sure he won’t disappoint here. The plot of Pandorum pits two crewmembers together waking up on an abandoned spacecraft with no idea who they are, how long they’ve been asleep or what their mission is. They soon discover they’re actually not alone and the result is more horrifying than they could ever have imagined. Continue reading ‘Comic-Con 2009 Update #11 – Overture Films: Pandorum’
