Young Sheldon is finding its annual way home to my beloved Blu-ray format September 1st courtesy of Warner Archives. I suppose if anyone is qualified to write about it on the website here that would be myself having covered The Big Bang Theory seasons for the last seven years. If interested, you can find all my reviews of the show archived right HERE. I am a bit surprised that none of my peers on the site here are fans of The Big Bang Theory even though it perfectly matches their inner geeks minus the jobs the guys on the show hold. Young Sheldon, now in its third year, is the only spinoff from the aforementioned series. That’s too bad because when the show ended last year I could have thought of several ways to keep it fresh or create new spinoffs from, but I digress. We’re here today to chat about the third season of a CBS show that I feel keeps getting better and better, Young Sheldon. Continue reading ‘Young Sheldon: The Complete Third Season (Blu-ray Review)’

Prior to taking in Chelsea Christer’s energetic and enduring documentary, Bleeding Audio, I had no awareness of the pop punk quartet known as The Matches. Originating in Oakland in 1997 (as then, The Locals), the group hit the road hard. While finding success in their shows, signing to a record label and releasing 3 albums, they were never able to commercially take off as many industry scouts might have hoped. Continuing the push for 12 years, The Matches finally lost their spark and went their separate ways in 2009. With time passed, they found themselves rekindling and putting together some reunion shows years later to surprising resurgence. Bleeding Audio takes us through this frantic journey with the band, the people who supported them, collaborated with them and their fans.

Sometimes it quite stunning what films haven’t had their time in the spotlight with the Blu-ray format yet. There are films that seem so obvious that when they are announced you realized you thought it was already out and readily available. I do an annual piece for this site highlighting those titles that haven’t seen a Blu-ray release yet in any region of the globe yet. And after seven years of those article (Including a year where it was an almost weekly piece), even I missed William Wyler’s 1953 film Roman Holiday. For crying out loud, its the breakout Academy Award-winning performance for screen icon Audrey Hepburn. I can see you’re as surprised as I am. Paramount is making good on its tardiness, as they debut it as a part of the Paramount Presents line. An extensive new restoration has been done as well as actually loading one of these releases with extras (Even coming with a digital code). Take note, the press release to announce the film did mention it as a limited edition. You’ll definitely want to pre-order the film (Use the paid Amazon Associates link below if you like) to have upon arrival September 15th.

Coming at audiences with a one-two punch this month from The Criterion Collection is a double-dose films from famed and once-blacklisted director Jules Dassin. Both The Naked City and Brute Force have finally been given the Blu-ray upgrade, and what fantastic work it is to see these 70+-year-old films get proper treatment in their restorations. Speaking to 1947’s Brute Force specifically, this prison-set crime drama stars Burt Lancaster in a movie that may feel somewhat standard these days. However, the intensity for its time makes for a good watch and a still-relevant critique of the American incarceration system. This new Blu-ray presentation features the film, complete with a terrific restoration and more.

Eureka Entertainment to release WAXWORKS, Paul Leni’s expressionist anthology masterpiece, on Blu-ray presented from a new 2K restoration on home video for the first time in the UK. Available as a part of The Masters of Cinema Series November 9, 2020. The first print run of 2000 copies will be presented with a Limited Edition O-Card Slipcase. As there is no surviving original negative of Waxworks, this newly restored edition—a joint effort by the Deutsche Kinemathek and Cineteca di Bologna, L’Immagine Ritrovata (with funding from the German Commission for Culture and the Media)—is composed of contemporary prints and additional film materials from archives around the world. In Tokyo, a mysterious radioactive liquid is dissolving people into slimy, sentient, seemingly indestructible, blobs of destruction! Part-Japanese gangster noir, part-gooey body melting horror, The H-Man (Bijo to Ekitai-ningen – ‘Beauty and the Liquid People’) is one of the most unique sci-fi films of the 1950s. A series of mysterious catastrophes sweep the globe, causing the world’s scientists to conclude that beings from another planet are attacking Earth, and the world must unite to defend itself in a gigantic battle in outer space! With wonderful special effects sequences by Eiji Tsuburaya (Godzilla, Ultraman), and a rousing score by Akira Ifukube (Godzilla), Battle in Outer Space is a glorious sci-fi extravaganza. One of the most iconic Japanese kaiju, Mothra has appeared in over a dozen feature films. Presented here is her debut, a gloriously vibrant piece of filmmaking that forever changed how kaiju eiga would be produced in Japan. Following reports of human life on Infant Island, the supposedly deserted site of atomic bomb tests, an international expedition to the heavily-radiated island discovers a native tribe and tiny twin female fairies called “Shobijin” who guard a sacred egg. The overzealous expedition leader kidnaps the Shobijin to exhibit in a Tokyo stage show but soon they summon their protector, hatching the egg and releasing a giant caterpillar. When Mothra arrives in Japan and transforms into her final form, the nation and its people face their destruction. Psychedelically colorful, with an intelligent, benevolent protector as its lead kaiju, Mothra was radically different to every other monster movie that had come before it, and it remains a classic of the genre to this day. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Ishirō Honda’s Mothra on Blu-ray for the first time on home video in the UK. Continue reading ‘‘Mothra’ on Blu-ray November 16, 2020!’

2020 has been a very interesting time for the movie world. Home entertainment sales have gone up a bit, thanks to digital (unfortunately) and also DVD (even more unfortunately…). The most wonderful thing though is that 4K catalog titles are on the rise. We keep seeing a steady stream of announcements and box sets, making us 4K collectors salivate with all the new editions we can get lost in as the months go slowly on. The Goonies is no exception, and is in fact one of my favorite films, and one I’ve been anticipating on the format ever since we were blessed with it! **UPDATE (9/25/2020): My colleague and fearless website leader Brian White finally got a chance to take a look at The Goonies and he was kind enough to jot down his thoughts to include in this review. I thought it would be nice to have him share his thoughts and offer a differing opinion on the video quality to give a different view for those still on the fence about purchasing this release. When I have a moment to check out the disc again, I will go over it with a close watch to see if my opinion has changed, so be on the lookout for another update soon… As Brian says below, follow the red trail for more insights!
