The Doorman (Blu-ray Review)

I guess I am a sucker for the Die Hard formula. Sure, there are many duds when it comes to matching that sort of film in spirit, but it’s a tight concept that can allow for a level of tension, some eccentric bad guys, and a tough lead performance. The Doorman isn’t the best at replicating this concept, but it’s far from the worse. It’s entirely acceptable, with enough fun moments to work as a decent time waster. That may not sound like the best sort of praise, but honestly, sometimes you just want to turn on a straightforward action flick to watch, and this Ruby Rose action-vehicle does the job.

Space Ghost And Dino Boy: The Complete Series (Blu-ray Review)

Here’s a fun addition to the Warner Archive Collection as a sort of primer in the month before the big The Flinstones complete set comes out.  Before Space Ghost was an intergalactic talk show host on Adult Swim via Space Ghost: Coast to Coast, he was policing the galaxy in Space Ghost and Dino Boy. Yes, everything with it is stone faced serious as a fun Saturday morning toon for 1960s children, but it retroactively plays almost funny as the intentionally comedied Adult Swim follow up. Its a half hour progame with 2 short Space Ghost adventures and 1 featureing a character called Dino Boy that I personally don’t remember much at all of. This 2-disc set includes every episode from the series’ run and a feature length documentary about the life and career of Alex Toth, the artist who crafted the character of Space Ghost as well as many comic book and Hanna Barbara characters over the years. It arrives on October 13th, but you can pre-order via the paid Amazon Associates link below.

21 Jump Street (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

21 Jump Street 4K ReviewCan you believe it?  Even after seeing 21 Jump Street the film years ago I have still never seen the 80’s television show in my 37+ years of living on this land and water filled planet.  I’m a virgin there!  That’s horrible!  I should be dragged down the streets by my long, ugly hair or publicly pelted and stoned in the middle of town square for admitting that, right?  Maybe next year that will be a thing.  Well whatever capital punishment you decide for me, rest assured I will do my very best to bring justice to this 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray review of the 2012 action comedy of the same name.  Ready or not, here I go… Continue reading ’21 Jump Street (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

300 (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

300300 was one of those films where I truly didn’t realize how amazing it was with only one viewing under my proverbial belt.  Admittedly so it took a couple for me to declare it epic, but fast forward 13 years and here we are.  One of the greatest historical fantasy films is making its 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray debut and not a moment too soon.  2020 has been one hell of a year and 300 on 4K disc may just be what the doctor ordered for some temporarily relief.  I’ve been patiently waiting several years for this epic period action film to make a 4K appearance and that day has finally come this October 6th.  Hear me roar as I guide you on this 4K adventure with 300 Spartans facing off against 300,000 invading soldiers.  Hoorah! Stargirl: The Complete First Season (Blu-ray Review)

One of the now defunct DC Universe streaming service’s original programming menu included Stargirl, the adaptation of Geoff John’s original creation. Thanks to things like pandemics, Stargirl wound up getting time in the spotlight in the summer on the network that is the home for DC Comics television shows, The CW. No, she’s not multi-versing into the now former Arrowverse at this time, they just needed some content. Now that the run on CW has ended, the show is getting itself a fancy Blu-ray release. And that’s about where that effort stops as this thing comes with the episodes and that’s it. No bonus material available here. However, if you want to truly own the show, then this is it. Stargirl: The Complete First Season arrives on Blu-ray September 29th, which means, you can already order it now and have the set on its way to you. Halloween: The Curse Of Michael Myers At 25 And Other Films With Alternate Versions

Following a seven-year absence, September 29th, 1995, saw the long-awaited return of cinema’s most haunting shape, Michael Myers. For myself, as I’m sure for many other fans, Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers was the first time I had the opportunity to see my favorite bogeyman on the big screen. As strange as the Thorn cult was, seeing Michael and Donald Pleasence’s Dr. Loomis square off for the final time wouldn’t be the biggest impact this film would have on me. As a more common history tells it, the film was ripped to shreds by critics, disappointed greatly at the box office, and didn’t launch Brother Cane into alt-rock stardom. Halloween fans, horror movie lovers, and other knowledgeable film crowds know its greatest legacy lies not on the screen debut of Paul “Steven” Rudd (Okay, Clueless beat it to release, but he shot this first), but from a highly sought after, copied and traded VHS tape featuring an alternative version of the sixth Halloween film known as “The Producer’s Cut.”

The Alejandro Jodorowsky Collection (Blu-ray Review)

One of the most polarizing and impressive filmmakers in all of history is the one Alejandro Jodorowsky. A true artist of the form, his films have proven they have plenty to say and then some. And over the years they evolve, unlock new ideas and grow. To a majority, the reaction is probably to be repulsed by it or turn to their watching partner and say “What the f*ck did I just watch?” No, these aren’t something to watch on a first date, or second, or third or maybe even after marriage. But, if you allow them in and start to see the forest for the trees, there’s a deeper mental exorcise and philosophical enrichment when studying his work. Three of his earlies works and one of his latest are included in this new The Alejandro Jodorowsky Collection arriving on September 18th. Those include Fando y Lis, El Topo, The Holy Mountain and Psychomagic, A Healing Art. All received 4K restorations and new bonus materials (Sans Psychomagic). This set comes packaged with plenty of goodies and is available now.

Little Monsters – Collector’s Series (Blu-ray Review)

Well, well, well. Look who’s back in the time of the pandemic. Its Vestron Video! A sub-label from Lionsgate many thought had been put six feet under. There was word that new titles were being worked on but its been over a year a the least since one has come out. Now, its back with two pretty fun ones to resurrect the series. One of those happens to be the kind of wild kids movie Little Monsters. The film stars Fred Savage and Howie Mandel and has all sorts of wild hijinks. In a period of nostalgia for old 1980s kids movies, it feels that this one is still certainly forgotten. I’ll always remember it for feeling like I was getting away with something watching it due to a lot of the lewd humor and such. There are a lot of new bonus features on this release including a new interview with Howie Mandel! And its super cheap, so you can pick it up using the link below. Shivers – Collector’s Series (Blu-ray Review)

First, the American debut of David Cronenberg’s Shivers. Arrow previously released the film in the UK, but from what I gathered it was one that the fans were hoping would get a make-over. Vestron Video brings it here with a nice load of new features and pretty cool new cover art. The film was released back on September 5th and is available at an insanely low price to start with considering what these used to be.
