Biopic ‘Goalie’ About Legendary Netminder Terry Sawchuck

As an avid hockey fan and former player, I nearly did a backflip when I caught news of the upcoming film about hall of fame goalie Terry Sawchuk. While he played for numerous teams in the NHL, he was best known for his time with the Red Wings from 1949 throughout much of the 50’s and into the early 1960’s.  Now the late, great Sawchuk gets his own movie.

DARK STAR PICTURES will release the critically acclaimed GOALIE, starring Mark O’Brien (Marriage Story), Kevin Pollak (The Usual Suspects, “The Marvelous Miss Maisel”), and Georgina Reilly (“City on a Hill”) On Demand and Digital February 25. It based on the true story of hockey player Terry Sawchuk and is directed by Adriana Maggs.

CATS Gets A Home On Blu-Ray April 7th

Cats are coming! Although Alamo Drafhouse has started hosting Rowdy Cats screenings now you can take home Universal’s musical oddity. Judge for yourself if this is a misunderstood classic. Perhaps it’ll be catnip for ya! I am looking forward to revisiting this much-maligned but can’t look away film. I wish it was getting a 4K Whiskers Edition but I digress. The story of the Jellicle cats can soon take up space on your shelf as your real furry companions do. As I recall, Taylor Swift’s performance outdid her early acting bit from Valentine’s Day. Sir Ian McKellen went method. And newcomer Francesca Hayward was clearly a much better dancer than anyone else. I’m not looking forward to seeing Rebel Wilson eating bugs on-screen again but it’s a Blu-ray, I can skip that!

Sonic the Hedgehog Is An Ok Video Game Movie (Movie Review)

Videogames flicks based on the actual games have, at best, a spotty track record. I personally enjoy a few Resident Evils and at least one Tomb Raider (the Alicia Vikander entry), but I can’t argue that most films which use the language of games and their ideas with original characters and plots are much better. Your Wreck-It Ralphs and Scott Pilgrims are, to paraphrase Marty Scorsese, actually cinematic. Still, as one whose love of videogames is second only to film, I’m hoping a beloved property will crack that digital ceiling someday and be truly great. In my mind, studios have infinite lives to get this right. Will Sonic the Hedgehog runs laps around the previous game-inspired features?

Boyz N The Hood (4K Blu-ray Review)

Boyz N The Hood is one of those quintessential genre movies. More than just merely a “Black Film”,  Boyz centered around universal themes, but those themes are turned on their ears by the new landscape presented by visionary director John Singleton. The characters, the setting, the music and the mood are all such a huge part of the enjoyment of this film.  The film itself is such a huge iconic moment for 90’s cinema and for people of color who lived these lives.  The film was announced for a 4K disc late in 2019, and to my surprise there were a huge amount of 4K enthusiasts as excited as I was to see this announcement.  Boyz N’ The Hood is available now for purchase, and you can get your copy at the paid link below!

Scream Factory’s UNIVERSAL HORROR COLLECTION VOLUME 4 Arrives March 17th On Blu-ray!

Universal Horror Collection Volume 4 screams to life on March 17 from Scream Factory! Special features include new 2K scans, new audio commentaries, a new featurette, and much more. Volume 4 includes four tales of terror from the archives of Universal Pictures, the true home of classic horror. This collection includes such horror stars as Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, Lionel Atwill, and Rondo Hatton. Boris Karloff ignites the screen as an inventor who is kidnapped by a gang of burglars and forced to help them commit robberies in Night Key. Bela Lugosi stars in a creepy tale of strange characters, secret passages and a murderer who masters the art of “mind over matter” in Night Monster.  In The Climax, Karloff is terrifying as a mad doctor whose insane jealousy over a beautiful opera singer may drive him to murder. A giant of a man is used as an instrument of evil by a mad sculptor in House of Horrors.

‘Rio Grande’ [Eureka! Masters of Cinema] on Blu-ray & DVD April 6, 2020!

Rio Grande Masters of Cinema Perhaps one of the most underrated of the collaborations between director John Ford and star John Wayne, Rio Grande manages to be both a conclusion and a new beginning for this most iconic of actor-filmmaker collaborators. The film is the final entry in Ford and Wayne’s “Cavalry Trilogy, ” following their hits Fort Apache (1948) and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949). Yet it also marks the first of five appearances Wayne made with actress Maureen O’Hara, three of which were directed by Ford. Wayne is Lt. Col. Kirby Yorke, attached to the Texas frontier in 1879 to protect settlers from attacks by Apaches. When Yorke’s son a West Point flunkee turned Army private is assigned to his father’s regiment, tensions flare upon the arrival of Yorke’s estranged wife Kathleen (O’Hara), who wants their teenaged son out of Yorke’s unit. After Apaches attack, the stakes of Yorke’s mission escalate, and he must journey to Mexico where the Apaches are hiding out. With his son and two old recruits (Ford/Wayne regulars Ben Johnson and Harry Carey Jr.) as accompaniment, Yorke faces his toughest battle.  Continue reading ‘‘Rio Grande’ [Eureka! The Wave (Blu-ray Review)

A few months back (October to be exact), our very own retired/not retired Jason Coleman gave a 5-star review to Gille Klabin’s film, The Wave. Coleman also interviewed Klabin on the site and you can find all of that HERE. We also managed to snag a pull quote for the press release materials for the film’s home video (Blu-ray and DVD) release. And a thank you to Epic Pictures for the schmoozing as they provided a poster, a postcard, a tye-dyed rag of sorts, a cookie and a mysterious powder. Having seen the movie now, I think I’ll stay away from solving the mystery of the powder. Gille Klabin’s  mind-bending film stars the likes of Justin Long, Donald Faison, Sheila Vand and Tommy Flanagan. It will be unleashed onto glorious home video to see what Jason Coleman is raving about on February 11th.

Swamp Thing: The Complete Series (Blu-ray Review)

DC Comics has made a concerted effort to release some top tier programming on their streaming DC Universe platform.  Amidst their growing library of shows include Doom Patrol, Teen Titans, both of which are live action, and the insanely fun Harley Quinn cartoon.  Within that list of title is the king of the green, defender of the bayou, Swamp Thing.  The live action series debuted in 2019 and was unfortunately cancelled after one season, largely due to budget issues.  To put it plainly, the show got too expensive.  Swamp Thing comes out on Blu-ray this Tuesday, February 11th, and I had a chance to check out ahead of time. Let’s take a look how the ten-episode, two-disc series looks.

Last Christmas (Blu-Ray Review)

Rom-coms that stray from time-tested formulas risk alienating audiences. Last Christmas, a movie about a would-be London singer who works at a year-round Christmas-themed shop while trying to navigate a very hectic life is one of those films. Despite a strong cast and a director with a solid track record, the film failed to connect with theatergoers last holiday season. I, too, was one of those viewers that couldn’t quite wrap my head around director Paul Feig and writer Emma Thompson’s high concept Christmas love story with a plot twisty last act, filled with wall-to-wall tunes from the late, great George Michael. Yet, here we are months later, and it’s a Christmas miracle, aka the joyous rewatch. I may have wished this was a 4K release, but I couldn’t have hoped for a better reevaluation. I liked Emilia Clarke even more this time around. Henry Golding had me wanting to dance and jump around the U.K. There was a bit more to this tale than I had originally understood. And man, does this package have amazing stocking stuffers via extras! Last Christmas is here, just in time for… Valentine’s Day.
