Batman: Gotham By Gaslight (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

While the live action world of the DC superheros has been in a constant state of change, continually criticized for the quality and direction with which they have taken these legendary characters, the DCAU has been thriving quite mightily with its share of mostly good stories. This medium also allows more leniency in terms of interpretations and spin-offs. Now they are heading into the elseworld territory and I couldn’t be more excited where they are starting off at. Of course they are going to crutch on Batman, but why not? Batman is one we are all too familiar with in his regular form, he’ll be the one we most appreciate when done different. Gotham By Gaslight is a creation of Hellboy creator Mike Mignola. Hopefully with the success of this, maybe we could see something like Darren Aronofsky’s take on what became Batman Begins in an animated “elseworld” form. Gotham By Gaslight hits 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray on February 6th, so pre-order now to get yourself a copy of this exciting DCAU venture. Drag Me To Hell – Collector’s Edition (Blu-ray Review)

It’s hard to believe its almost been ten years since director Sam Raimi returned to his horror roots following an incredibly successful run directing three Spider-Man films. He did so in the form of the 2009 film, Drag Me To Hell. It was more than a return to form though, it truly brought back many of the things we loved about his Evil Dead trilogy that laid dormant almost twenty years prior. While it didn’t catch the world on fire in the summer of 2009, the film opened to rave reviews and took in a solid box office haul.  And now its getting a suped up edition from Scream Factory, which feels kinda crazy but it is almost ten years old already. But, hell, I’m down for it. Hopefully, you will be too when it arrives on February 13th, just in time for that Valentine’s Day watch! Professor Marston and the Wonder Women (Blu-ray Review)

Professor Marston and-the-Wonder-Women Blu-ray ReviewProfessor Marston and the Wonder Women is a movie made for me on paper.  Why?  Because I love Wonder Woman and everything about her in the DCEU cinematic movie universe.  I won’t bore you with a hundred links, but if you don’t believe me check out my 4K review of her solo film here.  And our movie here,  Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, takes us on a different kind of cinematic journey explaining how this powerful feminist icon came to life, character-wise.  Even better our feature here is also rated R for strong sexual content including brief graphic images and language.  How can a flick about Wonder Woman be any better?  Wait!  Don’t answer that one.  Instead follow me down below as I show you around this superhero journey.  Up, up and away! A Bad Moms Christmas (Blu-ray Review)

A Bad Mom's Christmas A Bad Moms Christmas is an odd one for me to be reviewing here on the site.  It’s not because it’s a female centric film, but because I was so opposed to the first one.  For some reason I wanted absolutely nothing to do with it.  However, one boring Austin, TX afternoon I was able to pick Bad Mom’s up at a really cheap for my fiancee.  She wanted very badly to see it so it can’t always be about me.  Much to my surprise I was taken aback by not only how pumping the audio was in the rear speakers behind my viewing seat, but also how much I shockingly enjoyed the feature.  It was fun, fresh and crude in all the right which ways I love my comedies to be.  So needless to say I was very excited to see the next chapter in the Bad Moms franchise.  While oddly it’s a Christmas movie that was released way before even the 2017 Thanksgiving holiday I’m going to go into whether or not it delivers on all the goods the first did.  In other words I’ll let you know if it fires on all cylinders.  Here we go! Cloverfield (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

While these 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray releases of Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane as well as another film in this mysterious franchise should be a good ten year celebration of the original, its main talking point has been this odd turn to this possible Netflix release of the next on from Paramount. Ten years ago, mysterious built during the summer of 2007 with the strange and unheard of trailer attached to Michael Bay’s Transformers were finally answered and possibly the biggest and most apt and (quality-wise) success story of the JJ Abrams mystery box was opened. Cloverfield was a bigger January release than normal and became a film-internet hybrid and phenomenon following in the footsteps of The Blair Witch Project as well as another JJ Abrams project, LOST. You’ll be able to relive the original on the glorious 4K Ultra-HD format now, as it its available for order at the bottom of this review. Continue reading ‘Cloverfield (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

‘Hostiles’ Are US (Movie Review)

You can easily label Hostiles as a revisionist western. Then again, it’s not as though any filmmakers try to make classic westerns anymore, what with the modern emphasis on morally questionable heroes and increased awareness of what certain films tend to glorify and the efforts to subvert certain expectations. So sure, Hostiles is another western that goes after the grey area, more than it attempts to paint things in black and white. The results lead to some strong performances that fit right in with the beautiful landscapes captured on film. I only wish writer/director Scott Cooper found a way to tell a more involving story.

‘Shirley: Visions of Reality’ [Montage Pictures] on Blu-ray & DVD March 19, 2018

Austrian filmmaker, architect and experimental artist Gustav Deutsch reproduces 13 of American painter Edward Hopper’s oil paintings on film in Shirley: Visions of Reality, connecting them through the fictitious story of a red-haired New York actress through the years 1931-63. Shirley’s reflective and contemplative inner monologues cover her involvement in three decades of political, social and cultural upheaval that changed a country and its people forever. Pearl Harbour and WWII, the atomic bomb and the “conquest of space”, McCarthyism and the Cold War, the assassination of JFK and the start of the Vietnam War, Billie Holiday and the Southern blues, Elvis Presley and rock n’ roll, and finally Martin Luther King and the March on Washington. Presented as a series of nearly static tableaux’s, with stunning cinematography from Jerzy Palacz, Shirley: Visions of Reality is an experimental tour-de-force.  Continue reading ‘‘Shirley: Visions of Reality’ [Montage Pictures] on Blu-ray & DVD March 19, 2018′

10 Cloverfield Lane (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

10 Cloverfield Lane 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray ReviewOnce again I find myself not sure where to start about 10 Cloverfield Lane in this 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray review.  Do I talk about how much I love this film or do I explore the veil of secrecy it was literally made under?  I mean we all knew J.J. Abrams around this time was busy far, far away in another galaxy making The Force Awakens, but how many people besides his trusted confidants knew anything about this secret project until its initial trailer dropped in January 2016 with 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi?  However, the real question should probably address the conundrum that how does one or lets say the uninitiated with 10 Cloverfield Lane go into this?  Do you treat it as a direct sequel to 2008’s Cloverfield expecting more or less the same or is it really just a blood relative or as Abrams calls it a spiritual successor?  These questions and more I hope to tackle and answer below in the main body of my 4K UHD Blu-ray review.  So what are you waiting for?  Get your reading on!
