Following the footsteps of The Hunger Games and Divergent, The Maze Runner joins the ranks of the dystopian YA mega-franchise schlock with it’s second film, The Scorch Trials. As is the standard for such franchises, The Scorch Trials promises to be bigger and better, yet it fails on almost all fronts in such spectacular fashion. Wrought with incredibly bland, cliche, and uninteresting characters the movie struggles to dredge up any sympathy from the audience during its most tense moments. Even with the welcome addition of fresh faces the film never really seems to challenge any of its protagonists in any developing or meaningful way. Devolving into a mediocre and derivative blend of zombie action, rebel rousing, and teenage angst the movie fails to fully commit to any of these ideas. As if a strangely self referential metaphor for its own lack of coherence, most of the screen time is committed to the characters running frantically, looking for purpose and direction in a bleak and uninspired wasteland. 2015 has come to an end and now I get to post my favorite films of the year. This is never an easy list to put together and having seen 150+ films theatrically this past year, it was a challenge, but it is always fun to do and I’ve come up with a ranked list of 30 films. I am very satisfied with this final list I have put together, mainly because it is a reflection of my own opinions that I am happy to share. So here we go with my picks for the Top Ten films of 2015 and the runner-ups. (As per usual, I placed lots of Easter Eggs hidden in all the pictures).

So concludes this year of movie adventures! There have definitely been some surprising highs along with a few soul crushing lows, (cough) Fantastic 4 (cough). But through it all, we have persevered to reach the truly great films of the past year that keep giving us a reason to leave our cozy homes in favor of the Multi-plex.
This year Marvel didn’t exactly knock it out of the park like they did last year with the likes of “Captain America: Winter Soldier” and “Guardians of the Galaxy”. This year we got “Age of Ultron” and “Ant Man”. Both were decent enough. But compared to what we’ve seen in the past, they didn’t quite meet the high standard that Marvel established for themselves. “Ultron” had so many elements and characters that it was actually hard to follow what was happening on screen! Ant Man had some ground breaking shrinking effects that we haven’t seen since “Honey I Shrunk the Kids”. But it somewhat failed to endear you to the characters struggles. Both Ant Man and Ultron seemed more like place holders to tide us over until the next phase of Marvel awesomeness. And with “Captain America: Civil War” and “Doctor Strange” coming next year, I’m sure they’ll live up to the hype.

It’s that time of the year again. I generally hate this time of the year not because of the holidays, but because it means nothing but cold and deadness outside and in a reviewer’s world, the dreaded TOP 10 Favorite Films lists as well. Last year there was an influx of good movies released theatrically (IMO) making my 2014 Top 10 list a very easy one to fill up. However, this year I saw a lot less movies (stupid life) and in doing so there were many that I didn’t care for. To complicate matters even more for my below selections, I saw only mostly big, mainstream movies this year. The good thing about all of this is you can definitely feel free to disagree with my choices below. That’s what these Top 10 Favorite Films lists are all about, to create controversy. As a reviewer you want to stir that proverbial pot of controversy every so often and create that insatiable dish of good tasting debate that follows in the comments section below, at least I do. Scream Factory presents a double dose of samurai action with The House Where Evil Dwells & Ghost Warrior on Blu-ray on January 5, 2016. These two martial arts- themed thrillers from the 80s are now finally available for the first time on Blu-ray, in a release including a new high-definition transfer for The House Where Evil Dwells. Both films are a really weird mish mash of noble samurai films, 80s Cannon ninja movies and then Japanese ghost horror stories. While neither is a film related to the other in terms of story or continuity, they both are a perfect match to be put onto a release together. Through some cool old effects, throwback fun and sheer hilarity at some of the ridiculousness of both, those willing to take this adventure with Scream Factory should find themselves with some enjoyment. They say lightning doesn’t strike twice, but I beg to differ…at least in the world of entertainment. When we’re talking about Hollywood I can think of many second films in a franchise that are just as good as their predecessors with obvious examples being classics such as The Godfather Part II, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, The Dark Knight, Rocky II and many more. However, when you’re talking about serial television the list gets narrower for me like 24‘s second season, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena or Game of Thrones, etc. Television is a tricky arena to succeed because you don’t have two to three hours to wow your audience you have a whole ten plus hours to feed or bore your audience with programming. An odd commercial break or an uncomfortable cliffhanger can deter some ADD fans. Have a bad episode or two sandwiched between perfection and who knows how many viewers may have tuned out mid season not giving the latter half any candidacy. It gets even harder when you’re talking HBO’s True Detective. That first season was a masterpiece, a work of art. Did lightning strike twice for HBO in the second season of this anthology series? Find out down below in my Blu-ray review of True Detective: The Complete Second Season. Continue reading ‘True Detective: The Complete Second Season (Blu-ray Review)’

The Why So Blu top Blu-rays of 2015 wheel has spun and landed on me. Once again, I’m honored to close this out and go last. 2015 was a game-changer year for me with Blu-ray personally. For years, my colleague Gerard has been nagging at me to get a region-free player. I would complain about awesome UK releases and such that would be locked and I couldn’t get them. He would have such sage words of advice like “If you’re complaining and not going region-free, then you’re part of the problem.” Or “You know a solution to this, its nobody’s fault but your own.” So, for my birthday (and to start the year, its in January) my amazing wife got me a region-free mod’ed player. Life has not been the same since. It unlocked a whole new crazy world of awesome editions and more independent distributors. My wallet has also shrunk in size too, haha. If you’re a film fan or collector, I highly recommend doing this. With this new aspect and more releases coming my way, I’m expanding my list of 20 to 25 this year. Most of all, thanks to Gerard for getting me to go region-free. Continue reading ‘Brandon’s Best Blu-rays Of 2015 Across The Globe!’
