We Are Your Friends (DVD Review)

We_Are_Your_FriendsWith the proliferation and international appeal of electronic music it is hard to explain why such a fresh and ripe new movement hasn’t garnished more attention from the film industry. The first feature film directed by Max Joseph(Catfish: The TV Show), We Are Your Friends attempts to shine the cinematic light on this relatively new and emerging genre of music. Following the story of a young up-and-coming DJ, Cole Carter(Zac Efron), We Are Your Friends brings the audience into the club, and the heart of club music. Quickly taken under the wing of veteran DJ James Reed(Wes Bentley), Cole begins to find his own style and works his way into the main stream circuit. Utilizing a wonderful soundtrack, a few scenes of drug-induced surrealism, a great performance from Wes Bentley, and the age old tale of self-discovery We Are Your Friends sounds like a great way to spend a Friday night, but somehow fails to find its beat.

Aaron’s Most Anticipated Films Of 2016 (Based On What’s Scheduled)

panther-001This is always a tough list to put together. I see over a hundred movies a year and a lot of those films are ones I’ve been anticipating to some degree, while many others are smaller films that randomly arrive on the calendar months after the start of the year. I am aware there are a lot of directors I admire who have films being completed in time for Cannes and other film festivals and are expected to be in theaters sometime this year as well, but I’ve decided to only go with what has been scheduled so far and go month by month. I am curious to hear what others have to say as well, so feel free to add thoughts in the comments.

The Revenant Is A Dish Best Served Cold (Movie Review)

The RevenantThe Revenant is billed as a Western thriller.  Normally I’m not one at all for a Western (unless it’s a Tarantino), but you throw the word “thriller” in there and I’m all over it.  Add to the fact that the critics and media are saying this is finally going to be the one for Leonardo DiCaprio (despite his limited vocabulary here) and once again I’m there.  Now listen closely as this third bullet point is the one that really got my sweet behind in the theater seat last month for this one.  “They” (the powers that be) said the brutality in this one is out of this world, and I said oh snap, count me in!  There’s obviously much more to factually discuss here, but now you at least know what appeals to me (and knowing is half the battle).  The question to tackle now is whether or not The Revenant will appeal to you.  Let’s get started! Gerard’s Top Films of 2015!

70mm2015 was a great year for movies and it seems that most of them, or at least most of the good ones, are saved for December. I was busy catching up on films right up until New Year’s Eve. I may be a week late but better late than never when it comes to film. This list is technically my “Top 11 or 12” but I could have made it bigger but then that wouldn’t be efficient. There are quite a few surprises in store, as well. In any event – I give you my favorite films of 2015!  Continue reading ‘Gerard’s Top Films of 2015!’

The Dark Knight III, The Master Race

DKIII

It’s been 30 years since Frank Miller forever changed the character of Batman with his seminal work, The Dark Knight Returns. Prior to this pivotal book, Batman was best known as a zany caped crusader, a joking, colorful, day time crime fighter full of quips. Miller found the essence of Batman, the dark, disturbing, psychotic vigilante. This book hit the bullseye and showed the world the potential Batman could have. Without it, there is no Tim Burton’s Batman. There is no Christopher Nolan trilogy. There is no Batfleck. Continue reading ‘The Dark Knight III, The Master Race’

Gregg’s Top 10 (and worst 3) of 2015

Gregg's Top 10 of 2015 - Why So BluThis year I probably got to see the least amount of films I wanted to at the theater. Such is the case with a full schedule of work, school and an Irish dance show.  So what did the year bring us?  We got revisits from popular franchises like Mission Impossible and Avengers, though for only the second in the series, Avengers: Age of Ultron felt tired and rather boring. Meanwhile, Tom Cruise keeps chugging away putting out better spy films than the famed Bond series. As for the bottom feeders, although I did miss out on the often criticized Fantastic Four reboot, I do have plenty to talk about as far as the duds that hit cinemas this past year. Without further fluff and rambling dialogue, I give you my best and worst of 2015.

Brandon’s Top 10 Films Of 2015

Brandon Top 10 Films ThumbWelcome to my version of the Top 10 Films Of 2015!  No matter the year, whether it be considered a “good” or “bad” one, I still find it hard to whittle the thing down to 10.  Last year I skewed it a bit, going for cute with 14 films in 2014.  This year, tough as some of the cuts were, I was able to get it down to 10.  The year had some very emotional highs for me, and every one of the films on the list grasped at me in some certain way.  They left me with some good thought or appreciation while others exhilarated and had me very amped up after seeing them.  With 2015, the typical Oscar bait didn’t really impress me too much and I’ve also decided I’m going with my gut and the films I’m going to revisit most after this year.  Those really are the ones that are “best” to me.  I look back at my previous Top 10s lists and there are ones I haven’t even touched since making the list.  I’ve given up doing a Worst films list for my own reasons, but if you’re wondering The Human Centipede 3 was the worst film I saw this year and the worst film I saw at the theater was Terminator: Genisys (And yes, I did see Fantastic Four. But is it worth arguing which of those is more awful?).  Now, onto my picks! Continue reading ‘Brandon’s Top 10 Films Of 2015′
