In the 1990s, independent films were on the rise and studios like Miramax were at the forefront of distribution. Many studios created a separate wing to focus on and gather the independent, documentary, art house and international films under a single banner away from the blockbusters and bigger star studded fare. Sony Pictures developed Sony Pictures Classics for this very reason in 1992. And for the 30th Anniversary of the studio’s formation, they will be putting out a 4K Ultra-HD box set with 11 films from the course of their history, including 10 that are making their debut on the format. This review will be taking a look at one from their first year, the Sally Potter film Orlando that stars Tilda Swinton and Billy Zane. Before George Miller returns to the wastelands of the Mad Max realm for the upcoming Furiosa, he’s dropped upon us his first original live action non-sequel, non-franchise film since 1992’s Lorenzo’s Oil. Three Thousand Years of Longing was one of the many original films released in the end of summer in August that looked like something to stand out from the pack. But alas, and like clockwork, people didn’t really bolt out to see it. While its been available on digital for a couple months, its now coming to disc on 4K and standard Blu-rays. Rollerball has had quite the journey in the United States during the Blu-ray era of home video. Originally release a pair of times by the not quite defunct Twilight Time label and then last year by Scorpion releasing, it makes its debut on 4K Ultra-HD via Shout! Factory under its Scream Factory label. The release will carry over mostly all of the bonus material from the UK release of Rollerball from Arrow Video which had an interview with the late James Caan. The King is making his debut on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray. When Paramount Presents launched a pair of years ago, they did so with the Elvis Presley. Now, he’s back with the debut of Blue Hawaii on the format. The new edition features a 4K restoration from the original negative. It comes with a standard Blu-ray, a digital copy and the collectible slip cover packaging that the Paramount Presents line is known for. New extras include a film historian commentary and a scrapbook full of high resolution never before seen or not seen in a long while behind the scenes shots from the film that came straight from the Paramount vault. One of the year’s biggest surprises, and that surprise being is mere existence, Pearl will be arriving on Blu-ray on November 15th. The film, a prequel to Ti West’s first film this year, announced itself at as the credits ended to X. With continued great reviews for this series going 2 films strong now, Pearl proved an even more unique experience and showcased more of the strong West/Mia Goth combo. The film comes with a couple featurettes and will be available in 2 different editions. That difference merely being the cover art and that’s it. Top Gun: Maverick defied the odds and flew past all doubters on its way to becoming the biggest movie of summer 2022. Could it hold for year’s end? It’ll be tough with Black Panther and Avatar supplying large challenges in the closing months of the year. In old school fashion, it arrives on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray after a healthy theatrical run with good legs and notably enough still in the box office top 10.
