I’ll admit it. I realize that I’m one of the rare fans of 2005 comedy The Ringer who quite honestly has been waiting an awful long time for this one to make it to the Blu-ray format. While it may not be the best that the comedy genre has to offer, there’s no denying that like most films the Farrelly brothers are behind the feature has some heart, bite and merit. You can chalk it up to my past and my involvement with the Special Olympics, on the field volunteering and behind the scenes creating websites for them, but regardless whatever reasons I have for liking this one so much it always comes down to the kids and how special they really are. The comedy is only secondary. Now I realize maybe that’s not the correct way to market this film, but after sitting down with this one again, finally on the Blu-ray format, and taking in all the behind the scenes footage and interviews with cast, crew and athletes the message this one hits home becomes so much more apparent, one of understanding, recognition and above all else, love. This is The Ringer! Continue reading ‘The Ringer (Blu-ray Review)’

I’m new to the world of Rizzoli & Isles. I’ve never watched a single episode of the series and was somewhat shocked to see that it’s now up to season four, so it’s obvious that it generates enough ratings to keep it on the air. I also figured that I might as well jump right into the events of season four first and catch up with the previous three seasons at a later date. All I knew going into season four of Rizzoli & Isles was that there were two very attractive females on the cover of the DVD case. Now, a couple of pretty faces don’t make or break a show, but what was I in store for? Read on to find out, folks! Continue reading ‘‘Rizzoli & Isles’ The Complete Fourth Season (DVD Review)’

It’s the reboot that seemed an interesting but dangerous venture. The original Paul Verhoven classic is damn near as perfect a movie as you can get. As unnecessary as the reboot sounded, interesting names kept popping into it. At the outset, this was a Darren Aronofsky project, but he exited. Even the eventual director Jose Padilha was kind of an exciting choice. Then the cast of side characters came with friendly names. Robocop himself was an actor that I am a big fan of in The Killing and Snabba Cash’s Joel Kinnaman. And apparently, by rule of Brian White, I must review every Joel Kinnaman film that comes across the desks at Why So Blu. So, unfortunately that meant I had to go back to modern Detroit and visit Alex Murphy again in a movie I have dubbed “Fauxbocop”. I really wanted this movie to be good, but in the end it struggled to battle being generic. My feelings alone and America aside, the film was a pretty solid global hit with a worldwide take of over $242.5 million in box office. Continue reading ‘RoboCop – 2014 (Blu-ray Review)’

My intro here kinda has nothing to do with the film I’m about to review. But, its something I’ve kind of always wondered. When a film has an exclamation point in its title, how are we supposed to talk about the film in a discussion. To appropriately pronounce the film when talking about it would be to raise my voice or shout it as I said it within my sentence. I’ve never seen anyone do that before, but that would be correct, wouldn’t it? I know I’m being facetious and its really not a big deal, but its just one of those silly things a film geek such as myself has wondered over the years. So, I’ll just leave that there and get back to reviewing this MCLINTOCK!!!! Blu-ray. Continue reading ‘McLintock! (Blu-ray Review)’

At this point, Tom Cruise does not need to be defended for doing what he is good at. The guy works incredibly hard to make movies that entertain audiences, fully committing to roles that may not require him to break out of a certain character type, but that’s why he’ s a movie star and not a character actor. Clearly he saw something in the script for All You Need Is Kill (now titled Edge of Tomorrow) that he felt would go well with the other sci-fi films in his filmography, because this did not look like an easy movie to make, yet it continues to add credence to his status as a huge sci-fi geek (I mean the dude actually believes in aliens). Edge of Tomorrow is inventive, witty, fun, and many levels of awesome, all rolled up into one fine summer movie package. If that’s not what you want from a summer action movie, Tom Cruise surely isn’t the one to blame.

I’m not sure who it was, either Aaron or Gerard here, but I remember it like it was only yesterday (no pun to the subject matter of this film), when one of them recommended to the Why So Blu clan members that they needed to check out the trailer for Edge of Tomorrow. Come to think of it, Aaron probably had a leg up on us all last year with his coverage of three Warner Bros. titles here and of course his WonderCon writeup this past April here. And like usual, when I first watched the trailer I refuted that I would ever love it. I mean I loved Tom Cruise in Oblivion last year and I even loved a loophole time jumping flick like 2012’s Looper, but I sometimes get agitated and very antsy when I’m forced to watch the same thing transpire over and over only to get a little bit more info each time. However, like usual, popular consensus seems to always get under my skin and I seemingly can’t help being swayed by it. When it debuted, Ray Donovan was a pretty high profile release. It championed Liev Schreiber and Jon Voight on premium cable in a modern LA-esque Bostonian mob story. The premiere broke Showtime records and became the highest rated debut in Showtime network history. But, somewhere along the line I feel like Ray Donovan floated away from the conversation (maybe I just don’t read Ray Donovan-heavy film/tv sites). Which is strange, because I felt with each episode this series got stronger and stronger with potential to be one of the most intense powerhouse television series in the future. Maybe season 2 will hit it huge again with people catching up. Because this is a really groovy show and has loads of potential to end up being something special if it ends up becoming fully realized. So, yeah, go check out Ray Donovan. Continue reading ‘Ray Donovan – Season 1 (Blu-ray Review)’

Come on, it was baffling that Ghostbusters II had yet to make it to Blu-ray. Its seems strange it took til now to get a set of 1 & 2 on Blu-ray. But, hit the 30 year anniversary of the original film and things like this can happen. You may remember when I did my original wishlist piece back in November this was on it and I mentioned the 30 year anniversary being key. Well, folks, the good folks at Sony sure do subscribe to Brandon’s Blu-ray Wishlist as evidenced by this upcoming set. And hey, you get the 4K remasters of the first film as well. This is pretty exciting, read more about it below! And besides, this is more exciting than anything pertaining to a Ghostbusters 3 anyway. We don’t need that, we do need this! Remember on the The Final Terror spec piece when I say its cool that its coming from VHS to Blu-ray and then said there’s an even bigger deal and to “just wait”. Today is that bigger deal. In what I think is possibly the biggest and most important release of the summer, Scream Factory is bringing Without Warning to home video for the first time ever. This cult classic film never even made it to VHS or BETA. As a collector of home video media most of my life, this is a BIG BIG deal. I really think there should be more excitement coming with this, but I do realize we’re talking a “cult classic”, so at least I know there’s a chunk who is. Today we have the specs for the release as well as the preorder link. Continue reading ‘Sci Fi/Horror Cult Classic WITHOUT WARNING Coming To Blu-ray August 5th!’

When The Sopranos debuted in 1999, its story of a modern-day mob boss juggling responsibilities between his family and his other “family” was like nothing that TV critics and viewers had ever seen. The series went on to win more than 20 Emmy® Awards throughout its run, including wins for its legendary cast members such as James Gandolfini and Edie Falco. This fall, fans and newcomers alike will have the opportunity to see the show like never before when The Sopranos: The Complete Series Blu-ray with Digital HD debuts for the first time on November 4, 2014. The BD set includes an exclusive feature full of new interviews with cast and crew, along with famous filmmakers and academics who explore how the acclaimed series transformed the television landscape. If 300 was a World War II movie, you would basically get Stalingrad. Currently known as the highest grossing Russian film of all time, Stalingrad is not exactly a great in-depth look at the bloodiest battle in WWII history, but it does have enough in the way of production values and stylish visuals to make it an engaging experience (especially in 3D) that happens to have a fairly traditional romance story to make it epic for all audiences. If you want a more direct approach to the story behind the battle of Stalingrad, this film won’t do much for you, but if you want a technically proficient 3D action flick, Stalingrad is an entertaining experience.

Actors can make all the difference in films that only have so much going for them, based on either the screenplay or the way a film handles convention in general. The Fault In Our Stars is a film that deals with two young adults with cancer, who happen to fall in love with each other. There is obviously more to it than that, which is what I assume made the original novel, by John Green, so compelling to its large fan base (note: I have not read this novel), but that is the one sentence way to describe the film. Keeping that in mind, while not doing much to be all that innovative, the strong cast was enough for me to accept the story being told, as many of the right notes are hit to make it a film that certainly tugs at the heartstrings, but does not try to pride itself on having that effect.

There is only so much to say about movies like In The Blood. It is a thriller that had minimal exposure upon its initial release and will live in the realm of streaming and cheap Blu-ray bins. That said, as far as these fairly straight-forward action vehicles for lower-profile stars and fun character actors go, In The Blood is a fairly enjoyable experience that constantly rides the line of ridiculous and too ridiculous. Gina Carano continues to find her place as both a professional butt-kicker and as an actress, but even when she struggles, the film has enough going on to make it a decent distraction.

Wow! What can I say about this feature(s) that hasn’t been said before. There’s a million and one ways I can spin this. Am I curious about it? Hell yeah I am. Am I scared of it? Honestly, I am a little bit. I really don’t know what to expect except (those two words look so weird together) a whole lot of nudity. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing is it? Haha! So we all know that Lars Von Trier’s controversial Nymphomaniac: Volume I and Volume II is coming to Blu-ray, but now we also know what to expect in the releases too this July 8th, which coincidentally is my dog’s 13th birthday (with hopefully many more healthy ones to come…knock on wood). So while you get busy by clicking on the pre-order link below make sure you check out the bonus supplements below too! Enjoy!
