It’s a double whammy of sorts with TWO Steven Spielberg films being released on Blu-ray stateside for the first time. Coming up we will be reviewing The Terminal starring Tom Hanks and Catherine Zeta-Jones and featuring an all-star ensemble cast with the likes of Diego Luna, Zoe Saldana, and more. I’m sure we all have airport horror stories but they compare to Hanks’ tale of being a citizen without a country? We shall see. Continue reading ‘The Terminal (Blu-ray Review)’

It does not take a whole lot for a film to win me over if it has a lot of charm. Get the right cast and allow them to have fun that is evident in the film and I will be happy to sit back and enjoy what has been put in front of me. Swingers is a favorite movie of mine because, despite the shagginess of the production, it has great cast interplay to go along with the depiction of nightlife in LA. Jon Favreau wrote and co-produced Swingers back in 1996 and has since gone on to direct much bigger movies like Iron Man and Elf. Chef takes him back to his indie roots. Working with a small budget and a simple concept, he has managed to take what he’s learned from his bigger movies and combine that very effectively with what he was able to do in his earlier films like Swingers and Made. The result is an incredibly charming film, with a great cast, a nice father/son story, and some terrific images of food to gaze upon.

Can this day get any better?! Not only am I off from my day job today (first time since last November), one of my best friends is coming into town, Aaron Neuwirth’s birthday bonanza is today, I finally got antibiotics after suffering for six weeks (I found out I’m seriously allergic to Austin and the only alleviation is to move) and I’m 25 minutes away from playing the latest Call of Duty: Ghosts map pack, Devastation, on the PS4, but this announcement also happens! Jeezus! What a day to celebrate! I cannot wait to check out Under the Skin on Blu-ray on July 15th. With the only opportunity to see this film in one of the crappiest theaters ever in Austin, TX I decided to hold out and wait for the bliss of it all on the pristine Blu-ray format. I sure hope it’s worth the wait! Oh what the hell it has Scarlett Johansson naked in it. It has to be! So without further ado, check out the full press release from Lionsgate out below! As the confessed-killer woos media and wins fans, Choi’s rage spins out of control. Is he the killer? Can justice ever be served? Continue reading ‘Confession of Murder (Blu-ray Review)’

In lesser hands, Neighbors could have been an easily forgettable mess of a film, with talented comedic performers simply going through the motions of a ‘versus’-type comedy. The thing that separates a film like this from whatever junk a company like Happy Madison Productions tends to put out in theaters these days is the attempt to not only introduce some easy themes to go with the bevy of jokes, but really deliver on them just as clearly as the gags. Make no mistake, Neighbors is a rowdy comedy that will live or die on whether or not observational humor + profanity (and shenanigans) can make you laugh, but it is hardly dumb humor. It has plenty of silliness for the actors to engage in, but grappling onto the idea of adulthood matters just as much.

Director Hu Gaun (Cow, Design of Death) taps into a variety of genre styles for the Chinese action-comedy THE CHEF, THE ACTOR AND THE SCOUNDREL, debuting on Blu-ray, DVD and digital June 24th from Well Go USA Entertainment. Described by Film Business Asia as part knockabout comedy, part serious spy movie, part tribute to the films of our childhood – it will also go down in movie history as the first comedy with a plot about germ warfare. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, China is suffering from a cholera outbreak because the Japanese are using it as a biological weapon. Four Chinese agents capture a Japanese scientist and his bodyguard and interrogate them by Chinese opera in order to get the vaccine formula. THE CHEF, THE ACTOR AND THE SCOUNDREL stars Liu Ye (Curse of the Golden Flower) as the Chef, Zhang Han Yu (Special ID, Back to 1942) as the Actor and Huang Bo (Lost in Thailand) as the Scoundrel, with Chie Tanaka (Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale) and Liang Jing (Eastern Bandits) rounding out the cast. Once is an Academy Award-winning indie film that blends drama and music in a very charming way. I remember being initially against this film back in 2007, simply because the trailer made it all seem so obvious in terms of the type of indie movie it was. I was very happy to eat crow after finally seeing it, as everything about this film made me smile. The music is fantastic, the performances feel authentic, and the small scale nature of this production have it work as a nice personal story about two people that form a brief bond. Now Once is on Blu-ray, where people can maybe rediscover this acclaimed film from 2007.

As a big Steve Coogan fan, I was happy to see him return to playing a character that brought him a lot of early fame. I was actually able to see this movie last year, as I was oversees, where the Alan Partridge character is much more popular. I was pleased to see the film receive a small theatrical/VOD release earlier this year, as there is a lot to like about it, with Coogan playing this radio DJ character who gets caught up in a crazy hostage situation. On June 10th, everyone will be able to see the film for themselves and find out what comedic joy they’ve been missing. Continue on to read more about this upcoming Blu-ray release.

One of the best films of the first half of this year is arriving on Blu-ray on June 17th. I was a big fan of Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel and was happy to catch it a couple times in theater (Review HERE), as well interview some of the cast and crew (HERE). The film is an adventure story of sorts, though it has plenty of other things going on that are comedic, mysterious, dramatic, and other words that describe this expansive, yet not-too-lengthy film. It has a huge cast, the includes many frequent players in Wes Anderson’s films, but is highlighted by Ralph Fiennes and young Toni Revolori, who make their Anderson film debut. The Grand Budapest Hotel is a weird and unique film that is unlike pretty much anything else coming out this year. Continue on to learn more about this upcoming Blu-ray release.

I guess if I had to consider my attachment to the original Veronica Mars series and how it came into play with the viewing of this film, I would say I was in a fairly decent position to review the film, without caving into the pressures of being a fan and alienating those unfamiliar with the show. Sure, I am a fan of the TV series, which I caught on Netflix, years after it was off the air. That said, I have not revisited the series since. Not that I do not have affection for the show, as I think Veronica Mars was a great series at its best, with fine performances from a large portion of its cast, which had a number of interesting characters and relationships, on top of a format that could balance comedy, drama, and mystery all in one. Having a new movie to experience, my best hope was that it could continue in that tradition, without feeling like it was pandering exclusively to those who loved it all those years ago. I never really thought it could stay away from that completely, but fortunately the film has enough sharp writing, aided by some nice lead performances, to make it worthwhile.

The most provocative film from the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, ESCAPE FROM TOMORROW should not exist, and yet it does. Like nothing you’ve ever seen, Randy Moore’s directorial debut is a bold and ingenious trip into the happiest place on earth. An epic battle begins when a middle-aged American husband and father of two learns that he has lost his job. Keeping the news from his nagging wife and wound-up children, he packs up the family and embarks on a full day of park hopping amid enchanted castles and fairytale princesses. Soon, the manufactured mirth of the fantasy land around him begins to haunt his subconscious. An idyllic family vacation quickly unravels into a surrealist nightmare of paranoid visions, bizarre encounters, and an obsessive pursuit of a pair of sexy teenage Parisians. Chillingly shot in black and white, Escape From Tomorrow dissects the mythology of artificial perfection while subversively attacking our culture’s obsession with mass entertainment. Let’s see what happens. Continue reading ‘Dark House (Blu-ray Review)’
