What About ‘Non-Stop’ Though? (Movie Review)

non-stop whysoblu thumbIt is fun to see how much credibility an actor with gravitas can bring to a really silly film.  Liam Neeson has returned to the action/thriller realm once again to star in an airplane-hijacking film, with twists and turns that go way too far in terms of being plausible.  It matters little though, as the film has way too much fun with embracing its ludicrous nature, which manages not to be too much of a fault, as Non-Stop finds a way to keep you guessing, while Neeson once again adds his serious presence to a film that may have once seemed beneath him.  It is not a film that is trying to say anything; it just wants to entertain, with the semblance of some clever ideas, in the midst of its high-octane silliness.

The Americans: Season 1 (Blu-ray Review)

the americans whysoblu thumbIt did not take a lot to get me to begin watching The Americans, during its initial run on FX last winter.  The show revolves around stories of espionage in a period setting, features a strong cast, and has the backing of executive producer Graham Yost, who is also the showrunner for one of the best currently ongoing series on television, Justified.  I was very happy to see that The Americans lived up to what I was hoping to see from it.  It takes its unique idea and blends an exciting amount of tension, action, and even some humor to work as a series that certainly builds and builds as it goes along.  With the second season on the horizon, the Blu-ray is now available for all who missed out to have the chance to catch up.

THE NEW GODZILLA TRAILER HAS ARRIVED!

godzilla-2014-poster-whysobluGodzilla just looks great.  I do not know how else to say it.  We now have a second trailer for the newest take on the legendary creature (which is being produced by Legendary) and it continues to look like a stunning achievement.  The cast is solid, the effects will obviously be amazing, and I am a big fan of where it looks like this story is going.  In terms of markeing, Warner Brothers is doing a pretty fantastic job of selling me on what this movie is capable of delivering.  I can only hope it meets my expectations, but I at least expected a good time at the movies (in IMAX), come this may.  Continue on to see the newest trailer for Godzilla, along with some images, and the latest poster.

Thor: The Dark World (Blu-ray Review)

Thor-The-Dark-WorldThe second film in Marvel’s “Phase 2”, Thor: The Dark World, is coming your way on Blu-ray.  I was a bigger fan than most on the original Thor, and I really think that film was a good set up with the characters and introduction to the Thor-verse to take it to another level with this second film.  Those who may not have taken kindly to the first film or felt it wasn’t what they wanted might be more pleasantly surprised with this second visit to Asgard.  And that they did this second time around.  Everybody returns to gives us a solid, fun sci-fi/fantasy adventure complete with that wonderful Hemsworth smile.  Cool enough too, it also gives us our first little sneak peak at the upcoming Guardians Of Galaxy as Thor’s world is the most natural gateway into that. The Slumber Party Massacre (Blu-ray Review)

Slumber-Party-MassacreScream Factory is upgrading their 2010 Roger Corman Collection DVD entry of The Slumber Party Massacre with a wonderful new Blu-ray.  They had once said that the DVD edition was the best it was going to get, but times change, new things spring up and they were able to develop a new HD transfer from the film’s original negative.  There were some a bit perturbed by this who had bought the DVD set, but I say “wah wah” that came out 4 years ago.  And I’m never going to whine about upgrading a favorite to Blu-ray.  They ported over the entire array of bonus features and added a new interview to the mix to give this release some new flavor.  I think it’s great that they’ve been able to upgrade some of the older Shout! Factory titles to Blu-ray (last month saw the upgrade of Bad Dreams/Visiting Hours double feature).  And once you see the video transfer on this sucker, you’ll be pretty ecstatic you double dipped. The Counselor: Unrated Extended Cut (Blu-ray Review)

the counselor whysoblu coverFor film lovers, the idea of putting director Ridley Scott and author Cormac McCarthy together for a film seemed like a grand idea.  Between Scott’s abilities to provide thrilling atmosphere and a compelling depiction of process in his films and McCarthy’s skill for writing about the darkest sides of humanity, while sometimes adding a slight touch of pitch black humor, a project like The Counselor had all the potential to be a strong ensemble thriller, matching up to the Coen Brother’s take on McCarthy’s previous work, No Country For Old Men.  Unfortunately, despite all the atmospheric work done from a filmmaking standpoint, the shallow characterization and lingering story did not quite make this dark tale excel to its fullest.  Now there is a longer version of the film available on Blu-ray, which is packed with Ridley Scott-style goodness.
