Scream Factory has provided us with a load of clips for their upcoming release of John Carpenter’s Body Bags. I’ve already reviewed the film HERE. The horror anthology brings plenty of laughs, scares and disturbing stuff. Fun for the whole family! It’s also a chance to catch Carpenter himself in rare form. He hams it up as the host of the anthology and you can tell he’s having a blast. The movie sports some familiar faces and some gooey gore as well. So, if you were on the fence about that preorder (you shouldn’t be!), check out these clips below to finally sway you. Then go ahead and click my Amazon link below and ensure your copy for this coming Tuesday!

80s fashion, comets, end of the Earth, underground science labs, valley girls and of course-zombies make for a damn good time in Scream Factory’s latest resurrection, Night Of The Comet. This is a film I’d like to slap myself for not becoming more familiar with sooner. The movie is a terrific, stylized load of comedy, action and horror. With two strong females taking the reins, this movie strives to be its own and tells a very unique side of zombie fiction that I don’t think has been attempted or matched since. This one had its release date delayed in order to get some bonus features taken care of. And folks, it was well worth your wait. Scream Factory gives it their highly coveted “Collector’s Edition” status, providing hours of entertainment beyond just watching the film. Let’s get to the dirty details on this one, shall we? It is strange that a film like The Book Thief will likely be facing an uphill battle in its efforts to be regarded as a praise-worthy film, beyond just the idea that sits as pure Oscar bait. Granted, it is a WWII drama, set in Germany, based on a popular novel that deals with a young girl vs. the tenets of National Socialism, but that does not mean it should be dismissed. Personally, I am not a fan of the term, “Oscar bait,” but it is hard to avoid it sometimes and a film like The Book Thief fits the criteria to a T. With that said, ideally the term applies to movies that are generally good and that is why I am happy to defend my thoughts on the film, as The Book Thief was an affecting piece of filmmaking overall, with some splendid performances and a story that has a nontraditional backdrop to work with, despite being set during World War II. I just wish the film found a way to play some key dramatic moments a bit differently.

Whether or not you knew this already, modern renaissance man/seemingly always squinting actor James Franco has not only been starring in films, but he has also tried his hand at directing several times. One of his latest efforts is an adaptation of the William Faulkner novel As I Lay Dying, which is considered to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. As a film, it is a bit of an odd duck. Franco’s directorial choices, as one hears the words of Faulkner come out of these actors, makes this film lean in a direction that was not entirely favorable to me. Still, as this film has the semblance of an experimental feature, among other things, there is a feature here that should provide some interest to those who seek it out.

Happy new release Tuesday! It’s also the first Tuesday in November. Meaning, all the dates for Blu-ray releases through the end of the year are pretty much set and locked in by now. There could be a wild card for late December thrown in somewhere, but it’s highly unlikely it would be an older catalogue release. So with all this set, I wanted to compile my own personal list of films I’d like to see finally hit Blu-ray in 2014. These are films that aren’t available in ANY territory. So, if you happen to be like list potentials Blue Steel and The Man Who Wasn’t There (sold in other territories as “The Barber”) who have releases in Germany and France you are not eligible for this list. These are also titles that have not been announced at all. Also, thanks to Scream Factory for announcing Sleepaway Camp last Thursday as it was originally on this list! I was going to make this list just 10 movies, but then I noticed I was editing stuck at 14 titles which oddly became appropriate. Trust me, there were plenty omissions from this list as well. What are some of your hopes for Blu-ray in 2014? After my list, let me know what some of yours are below! Continue reading ‘Brandon’s Wishlist: 14 Blu-ray Hopefuls For 2014′

Twelve-year-old Cyril (Thomas Doret), all coiled anger and furious motion, is living in a group home but refuses to believe he has been rejected by his single father (
Summer Hours’ Jérémie Renier). He spends his days frantically trying to reach the man, over the phone or on his beloved bicycle. It is only the patience and compassion of Samantha (
Hereafter’s Cécile de France), the stranger who agrees to care for him, that offers the boy the chance to move on. Spare and unsentimental but deeply imbued with a heart-rending tenderness,
The Kid with a Bike is an arresting work from the great Belgian directors Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne (
Rosetta), masters of the empathetic action film.

Along with the pics, the latest trailer is also in this post, along with a link to a Mustache Maker, in honor of the month of Movember. Feel free to have some laughs with this trailer, check out pics of the gang, and then load up an image of yourself and add a very specific mustache to your picture. It will make your face that much more hip!

Freda Kelly was just a shy Liverpudlian teenager when she was asked to work for a local band hoping to make it big. Though she had no concept of how far they would go, Freda had faith in The Beatles from the beginning and The Beatles had faith in her. Many people came in and out of the band’s circle as they grew to international stardom, but Freda remained a staple because of her unfaltering loyalty and dedication. As The Beatles’ devoted secretary and friend, Freda was there as history unfolded; she was witness to the evolution – advances and setbacks, breakthroughs and challenges – of the greatest band in history. For the first time in 50 years, Freda shares her story. Continue reading ‘‘Good Ol’ Freda’ on Blu-ray and DVD December 3rd!’
