Intense, enthralling, and unforgettable, Sunset Boulevard stars Gloria Swanson as Norma Desmond, a faded silent-movie star, and William Holden as Joe Gillis, a down-on-his-luck screenwriter whom she enlists to help her make her triumphant “return to the screen.” Directed by and co-written by Billy Wilder, this mesmerizing Hollwyood classic won three Academy Awards. Meticulously restored frame-by-frame, Paramount Studios has released Sunset Boulevard on Blu-ray for the first ever. The Blu-ray also contains over 2 1/2 hours of bonus materials. Let us see how the Blu-ray stacks, shall we? Yes, we shall. Continue reading ‘Sunset Boulevard (Blu-ray Review)’

After a long delay, Mad Men came back this past spring and was able to continue to show why it is among the best that television currently has to offer. With four seasons already in the bag and an ending in sight, Made Men is basically cashing in on all that has been established thus far, as the direction and look of the series is still fantastic and all of the actors are perfectly in tuned to playing the roles they have created. It certainly helps that the show is in good company, as it is featured on AMC, which is also home to what I do believe is currently the best show on TV, Breaking Bad (though Homeland had an amazing first season). Mad Men is certainly comfortable at the top, which shows in the series’ superb fifth season. Now the Blu-ray is available for all to enjoy, as it looks and sounds great, and features insight into this season’s production process.

Chasing Mavericks is the kind of film that clearly has its heart in the right place. I would not say that the story crashes like a wave onto the beach, because of its devotion to making its lead character a saint that can do no wrong, but it does suffer because it is so willing to not so much have real characters as it has easily defined types and several, by-the-numbers, dramatic subplots. On the plus side, Chasing Mavericks does make the case for their needing to be a true IMAX documentary about surfing, because this film does feature some pretty wonderful cinematography, when dealing with the mythical waves that our hero hopes to surf one day. It is a familiar sort of film, but being too familiar does not ruin it completely. Continue reading ‘Gerard Butler Rides Giants and Chases ‘Mavericks’’

For all the sequels and blockbuster we have gotten this year, an ambitious, high-budgeted, semi-independent film has certainly tried to push itself to the top as well. Cloud Atlas is one of the more unique films I have seen this year, as it not only swaps between six different storylines, but six different time periods, which range from the 1840s to way into the future. Add to that a handful of actors, all playing a variety of different roles and you can see why it is a very intriguing project, developed and directed by three talented filmmakers. Some flaws aside, I found Cloud Atlas to be incredibly well structured, given the complex nature of the story being told, and a wonderful work of art, after discounting the awkwardness of putting familiar actors in odd makeup. It will surely be divisive, but I was really into what co-directors Andy & Lana Wachowski and Tom Tykwer challenged themselves to make. On Saturday, October 20th, at LA Live Regal Cinema, John Carpenter was present at the 12th Annual Screamfest to receive a Career Achievement Award and to be a part of a Q&A before a screening of one of his films, The Prince of Darkness, which was celebrating its 25th Anniversary. John Carpenter has of course had a lengthy career, largely working on the outside of the Hollywood system to make movies on his own terms. He has also been responsible for several classics and game changers in the horror genre, including Halloween and The Thing. I was in attendance at the Q&A and managed to record all of it, which is posted in this article along with images of the 13 exclusive posters that were for sale at Screamfest on this day. Proceed further to hear this Q&A and check out the awesome posters that were on the scene. Continue reading ‘Screamfest 2012: John Carpenter Q&A And Original Artwork’
