Everyone nod you heads, because the black suits have come back. Still protecting the earth from the scum of the universe, the Men In Black have returned, but most importantly, they have redeemed themselves with an enjoyable third entry that gets better as it goes along. It has been a while since the last ‘Big Willie Weekend’, but Will Smith and everyone involved have managed to come up with a film that outshines its overblown production troubles. A lot of the same wit and humor that made the first film so enjoyable is present here, along with the strong makeup/effects work that has been present throughout the series. While it does take some time to really get going, the strong finish is what truly makes Men In Black 3 a worthwhile summer sci-fi comedy. Continue reading ‘‘Men In Black’ In Time’

Here’s another one I missed in the theaters. Dammit! But I did hear good things about it. Nevertheless, the action-thriller Man on a Ledge features an all star cast, led by Sam Worthington (Avatar, Clash of the Titans, Terminator: Salvation) as an ex-cop who escapes from prison to plan the ultimate heist: steal a $40 million diamond from a cutthroat businessman, and in the process prove his innocence. Hailed by critics as “a heart-pounding adrenaline rush,” the film will debut on Blu-ray and DVD on May 29th. But we have something better planned for one lucky reader. How would you like to win a Blu-ray prize pack that includes not only the Blu-ray, but also a black baseball cap with the film’s logo and a black coffee tumbler, also with the film’s logo? Wow! Now you’re talking! Way to sweeten the pot, Lionsgate! Please read on to learn how to win all of this! Continue reading ‘MAN ON A LEDGE Blu-ray Prize Pack Giveaway Contest!’

I could have easily titled this article “G.I. Joe & the Paramount Predicament” as it’s no secret by now that next month’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation is no longer slated for a June 29th release. Actually, it’s not even on the radar for this year, but instead has been pushed back to March of 2013. This move has many scratching their heads and has already caused many a fan to react unfavorably toward the news that came out of left field earlier this week. So what is Paramount’s real reason for this unprecedented change in release dates?

Hell on Wheels tells the epic story of post-Civil War America, focusing on a soldier who sets out to exact revenge on the Union soldiers who have killed his wife. His journey takes him west to Hell on Wheels, a dangerous, raucous, lawless melting pot of a town that travels with and services the construction of the railroad, an engineering feat unprecedented for its time. The lavishly-produced series documents the railroad’s engineering and construction, as well as institutionalized greed and corruption, the immigrant experience and the plight of newly emancipated African-Americans during Reconstruction. Chronicling this potent turning point in our nation’s history, this fan favorite series shows just how uncivilized the business of civilization can be across 10 absorbing episodes. In Men in Black III, Agents J (Will Smith) and K (Tommy Lee Jones) are back… in time. J has seen some inexplicable things in his 15 years with the Men in Black, but nothing, not even aliens, perplexes him as much as his wry, reticent partner. But when K’s life and the fate of the planet are put at stake, Agent J will have to travel back in time to put things right. J discovers that there are secrets to the universe that K never told him — secrets that will reveal themselves as he teams up with the young Agent K (Josh Brolin) to save his partner, the agency, and the future of humankind. Mash-up genre author Seth Grahame-Smith’s career is one I’m watching very closely and with great admiration for my own selfish reasons. I last visited his work in 2010 with my review of his masterpiece, in my opinion, Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter (see my book review here). Coincidentally, Grahame-Smith was able to adapt that story to the big screen making it along with Prometheus, one of my most anticipated films this June (see the theatrical trailer here). In addition to next month’s big screen debut, Grahame-Smith has been keeping himself very busy with his first motion picture writing credit, Johnny Depp and Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, his resurrection of the Beetlejuice franchise, development of a stop motion animated B-movie monster film, Night of the Living, and of course, the reason we are all here, last April’s release of his third full length novel, Unholy Night. Directed by lauded filmmaker and photographer Lauren Greenfield, who won the U.S. Directing Award for Documentary Film at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival for this film, The Queen of Versailles is a character-driven documentary about a billionaire family and their financial challenges in the wake of the economic crisis. With epic proportions of Shakespearean tragedy, the film follows two unique characters, whose rags-to-riches success stories reveal the innate virtues and flaws of the American Dream. The film begins with the family triumphantly constructing the biggest house in America, a 90,000 sq. ft. palace. Over the next two years, their sprawling empire, fueled by the real estate bubble and cheap money, falters due to the economic crisis. Major changes in lifestyle and character ensue within the cross-cultural household of family members and domestic staff. Continue reading ‘‘The Queen of Versailles’ in theaters July 20, 2012′

If Superman: The Movie made you believe a man could fly, Chronicle will make you believe that three boys can hold their own up in the air as well. Chronicle is a pretty entertaining story about a group of high school kids that discover superpowers. That the film has the added quality of being shot by way of camcorders, cell phones, security cameras, and news footage is an interesting route to take. Setting the film up as a “found footage” flick does suggest some gimmickry is at play, especially when justifying the presence of the camera at times, but the joy of seeing a fresh take on what is both a superhero and supervillain origin story, made on a small budget, makes it worthwhile. Now that it is available on Blu-ray, I discover whether the disc has even more power to discover within. Continue reading ‘Chronicle (Blu-ray Review)’

¡Alambrista! is our next Criterion Collection Blu-ray review, which tackles that pesky subject of immigration and those coming over to make a better life for themselves and their family. If memory serves me correctly, ¡Alambrista! was the first film released theatrically to cover the subject. That would have been in 1977. Whether it remains relevant or not is another question. Then again, it’s in the Criterion Collection vaults for a reason, so I’ll let you take a wild guess on its relevancy. How does ¡Alambrista! stack up 35 years later? I will do my best to shed some light on the film – it’s subject matter I’m too familiar with. Let’s do this. Continue reading ‘¡Alambrista!: Criterion Collection (Blu-ray Review)’

These movies were either panned by critics, bombed when they were released theatrically, or both! But we still champion them as our favorite Guilty Pleasures.
