In reviewing a film that would be described as a political thriller, the question of how that person leans versus how the film is deciding to lean can easily come up. This is the same as associating any personal view towards a film, come time for its evaluation. Being subjective while holding back personal views can easily be tricky business to contend with. It also feels non-bothersome to me, as I am fairly apolitical and was really just interested in seeing what this fantastic cast could do in this film. Headlined by Ryan Gosling and starring George Clooney both in front of and behind the camera, among others, The Ides of March is a solidly entertaining film that may not have the punchiest dialogue or sharpest take on modern politics, but is very well acted and assuredly made. And now it’s time to review a Blu-ray title that I know everyone out there is probably jealous and envious of me for. Eat your hearts out because today we’re tackling a motion picture that took the box office by storm earlier this year. No one could have ever predicted that this little superhero flick could have garnered so much praise, fanfare love and positive attention in the eyes of merciless critics around the globe. And honestly, no one even bothered to believe that the film’s subject matter and lore could ever possibly be presented in such a down-to-earth reality-like fashion like that employed in Nolan’s Batman franchise. I know. I once stood with all of you. I was once a naysayer of the picture too. I overlooked the grand picture and judged the book by its cover. Then came the premiere screening on June 17th and it suddenly hit me like the football that once struck Marsha Brady in the nose. My world was never going to be the same…ever again! As if one giant freaking robots movie was not enough for one year, we now have a new one that involves the seedy underbelly that is robot boxing. Well not quite, Real Steel is a fairly standard sports action/drama, which happens to be set a small amount of time in the future where robots have replaced humans in the world of boxing. However, despite the Rock ’Em Sock ‘Em concept of this film, the central plot of this story revolves around a father and his estranged son learning to come to terms with each other, bonding over the accomplishments of a robot boxer they turn from an underdog into the people’s champ. Despite its adherence to clichés and many other issues that I had with the film, there was enough heart, likability, and sweet robot fighting action to have kept me involved with what was going on. Further proof that the 70s were a wonderful time for horror films, although this is less of a horror film and more of a series of unfortunate and really messed up events involving two teenage girls and a group of escaped psychotic killer convicts, The Last House on the Left is a film that pushed boundaries at the time, feels dated today, but is still a solid retrace of the earlier steps taken by Wes Craven. While Craven has recently done very little to keep me interested in what he has left to offer (he made the worst film of 2010 and Scream 4 was no return to form either), I can at least look back to these early days, when he had more interesting films to offer. It also helps that this Blu-ray supplies plenty of further info about this film, its production, and the times in general. It had the #39 rank in terms of box office receipts and an awesome $7,826 per theater average. Did I mention it only opened on 11 screens? Wow, time for a flashback of a review with A Guy Thing. I honestly thought A Guy Thing was only a couple of years old, but when I looked at the back cover it said 2003 – which means it was probably in production in 2002, and next year will be 2012 which make it a nearly ten year old film! Sorry, the logistics are fascinating to me. Jason Lee (Mallrats, My Name Is Earl), Julia Stiles (The Bourne Trilogy), and Selma Blair (Hellboy, Hellboy II) are cool people that I happen to like which did not make me dread watching the Blu-ray of the film. I know I’m in the minority, but this movie is very funny to me. Everything about Mike Judge’s Extract is delightful. From the story, to the script, to the acting; everything about this movie is a clear example of the way that Judge can put his audiences in a world of pure escapism containing outrageous humor. You can furthermore experience the greatness of Extract in Blu-ray, presenting theater quality video, but not so much for the sound department. After the gigantic cliffhanger that ended the second season, FX has now brought us Sons of Anarchy: The Complete Third Season to the Blu-ray format. Sons of Anarchy is a television show that runs on the FX network and comes to us from the makers of The Shield (an excellent show, by the way), so you best believe that Sons of Anarchy will not be pulling any punches. Sons of Anarchy features a great ensemble cast of characters like Ron Perlman (Hellboy) and Katey Sagal (Married With Children). How will this season stack up to the previous two? The final week of issue 1’s from DC’s New 52 have been released and the public has had their day in the sun to review them. While I didn’t get to every issue that came out last week, I did take a look at six of the titles. I passed on David Finch’s The Dark Knight, simply because I’m not big on the idea of stopping a series three or four issues into it, then rebooting it right away. Plus, that title did not receive favorable reviews on Comixology, so in its place, I went with the lesser known I, Vampire. With other titles like Superman and the Flash gracing last week’s releases, week four saw the New 52 first-issue premiers going out with a bang…or was it more like a pop?

I wanted Rocky with robots, and I got it and so much more! Do I need to say anymore? Well, adhering to my own review structure on the website kind of dictates that I do. Boo! So let’s talk some more about a film I heard about so long ago, but never bothered to research or learn what the subject matter was until I saw my first trailer this past summer. All it took was one viewing of the trailer and I knew, I had to see this one. This past summer saw the release of 30 Minutes or Less, director Ruben Fleischer’s follow up to the smash hit Zombieland. While I can’t say that I personally loved the film (review HERE), it certainly had a lot going for it and I’m willing to give it a second shot on Blu-ray, come its release on November 23rd. The film was about Jesse Eisenberg’s character, a pizza delivery boy, being forced to rob a bank, as dimwits played by Danny McBride and Nick Swarsdon strapped a bomb to him. Eisenberg recruits his best friend, played by Aziz Ansari, to help him, and things get “explosively funny” from there. Given the comedic talent in this cast, I’m sure the Blu-ray should supply some extra amounts of hilarity as well. Find out this November and continue on to learn more about this upcoming release.
