On this journey into darkness fans will have to bite their tongues, because Insidious is a PG-13 venture.  Yeah, I was bummed out to.  How will the film turn out some would ask?  How can the guys who created bear traps for the face and bloody killer puppets get on with a PG-13 film?  A bloodless PG-13 horror film.  I guess to quote George Michael,  “you gotta have faith.”  That will also be the first and last time I will be quoting George Michael.  With that out of the way please sit back and get ready to  enter this house of horrors known as Insidious, on Blu-ray…watch your step.  Continue reading ‘Insidious (Blu-ray Review)’

Damnation Alley (Blu-ray Review)

In Damnation Alley the world is devastated by a nuclear holocaust, causing the Earth to tilt on its axis and bringing vast meteorological chaos.  As the weather stabilizes, mutated insects start to emerge, preying on the survivors.  The surviving crew at a U.S. Air Force bomb shelter in the Mojave Desert picks up radio signals coming from Albany.  The commander, Major Eugene Denton (George Peppard, The A-Team), unveils two armored vehicles he has constructed and announces a plan to cross “Damnation Alley,” the hundred-mile-wide strip between areas of radiation hazard, to join the survivors.  They set off, taking on two civilians — a novice singer they find in the ruins of Las Vegas and a wild teenager (Jackie Earle Haley, Watchmen) — along the way.  The journey is also beset by giant mutated cockroaches, storms and crazed survivalists, making for some hair-raising escapes in this post-apocalyptic thriller.  Originally released in theaters in 1977 from 20th Century Fox, Damnation Alley has been out-of-print on VHS for several years, so I’m sure many are anticipating its debut on DVD and Blu-ray. Battle Beyond the Stars (Blu-ray Review)

A long time ago, in a former lumber yard far far away (actually 1980 in Venice, Calif.), Roger Corman gathered together a fledgling team of filmmakers to make one of the best low-budget science fiction films of all time, Battle Beyond the Stars, a space opera that managed to playfully borrow from Star Wars and The Magnificent Seven, to come up with an enduring cult classic. Long out of print, Battle Beyond the Stars has been meticulously restored with a new anamorphic widescreen transfer (1.85:1) from the internegative, boasting a new 5.1 DTS Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray, and featuring a galaxy of extras, including commentary by writer John Sayles and Roger Corman; a new interview with actor Richard Thomas; a behind-the-scenes technical featurette and much more.  Continue reading ‘Battle Beyond the Stars (Blu-ray Review)’

Rob And Steve Have A Lot Of Fun On ‘The Trip’

There are a lot of very good past and present actor/director teams and actor/actor teams.  While it is easy to acknowledge examples such as Scorsese and De Niro or Johnny Depp and Tim Burton, more obscure ones, such as Viggo Mortensen and David Cronenberg are equally great pairings.  The subject of this review, The Trip, is very obscure (at least for American audiences), as it reteams director Michael Winterbottom with actors Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon.  The three have previously worked together on two very good films, 24 Hour Party People and Tristam Shandy: A Cock & Bull Story.  Their latest collaboration, The Trip serves as a humorous, and at times hilarious, look at two actors playing exaggerated versions of themselves as they go on a road trip through North England, acting as the perfect foils for each other. Find Out About Henry’s Crime This August on Blu-ray!

I’m very entertained by the casting of this movie.  It has Keanu Reeves, Vera Farmiga, and James Caan.  I missed it when it came out in limited release, but now we’ll all have a chance to see Henry’s Crime.  On August 23rd, this film will be released onto Blu-ray and DVD.  It is about a wrongly accused man ending up in jail only to decide to actually commit his so-called crime once he is released.  Complications of course ensue, once a woman gets involved in his life, during his planning.  It sounds intriguing enough and it will be a nice break to see Reeves not saving the world and participating in a romantic/crime comedy instead.  And James Caan is always reliable when it comes to some supporting fun.  We can all soon see how much fun this August.  Check out more details below! ‘Horrible Bosses’, Great Cast, Funny Movie

It has been a solid year so far for original, R-rated comedies.  While not every film has been a homerun, I do enjoy the fact that we are being treated to a lot of good, raunchy fun, as opposed to watered-down versions of films followed by the inevitable “unrated” edition 3-4 months later.  Horrible Bosses joins in on the fun, becoming one of the best-casted comedies so far this year.  Often times you have too many great elements in one project and it can become a mess, but what a film like this certainly benefits from is having a great cast, with the three leads making the best of their great chemistry together. Das Boot (Blu-ray Review)

I have a confession to make.  I’ve owned several versions of Das Boot (The Boat) throughout the years.  I used to own the director’s cut DVD which ran  209 minutes long.  I even owned the full original uncut version that ran for an even longer 293 minutes on DVD.  Yes, you can say I was a very dedicated fellow when it came to all things Boot. Well, this being Blu-ray and all, it was time to get back on…Das Boot again.  This newly remastered high definition edition of the WWII German film is finally available for all those poor souls who have never journeyed to the bottom of the sea while hell was raining down on them from above…. pretty dramatic, huh?  Take a journey with me to the bottom of the sea if you dare.   Continue reading ‘Das Boot (Blu-ray Review)’

‘ZOOKEEPER’ is Kevin James + Talking Animals + Famous Voices + Family Rating = DUD!

Let me start out by saying that I am a secret fan of Kevin James.  I liked him in King of Queens on TV, in his movie roles such as Hitch, Paul Blart: Mall Cop, Grown-ups, The Dilemma and so on.  I’m not saying these titles are fantastic, but I didn’t feel like my skin was being peeled off either.  I don’t mean to say James is a master thespian by any means,  just a regular guy, an anti-Hollywood type, if you get my meaning.  He’s not the first person you think of for leading man roles, etc…, but I like him anyways.  Maybe it’s because I can relate to him in his appearance (some say we look like brothers! – ha!), or his character’s shyness covered by his loud comedic joking, or just that he’s everyman… whatever… but in the movie ZOOKEEPER even I am having a hard time with Mr. James.  Let me explain… Continue reading ‘‘ZOOKEEPER’ is Kevin James + Talking Animals + Famous Voices + Family Rating = DUD!’

Rango (Blu-ray Review)

I was very curious about Rango when it hit theaters, but for whatever reason, I was not able to catch it on the big screen.  People kept telling me that since I’m a big western film buff that I would love it, because it in fact IS a western.  So far, so good!  The theatrical poster would tell you otherwise, because it’s just a chameleon holding a big orange fish.  Buzzkill.  I don’t care about that.  Then I started to read who was involved in the project.  Johnny Depp, Bill Nighy, Harry Dean Stanton, Alfred Molina, Ray Winstone, Timothy Olyphant, etc… Hey, these are all people I like!  My curiosity got the best of me and so the Blu-ray Gods gifted me with reviewing Rango on Blu-ray.  This is an early review, so let’s go!  Continue reading ‘Rango (Blu-ray Review)’

Our Second Enchanted Conversation with Zombex’s Emily Kaye

There are a total of five people in my life that when the opportunity arises that I can talk to them openly and candidly I don’t even bat an eye or think one second about it.  I literally drop everything I am doing and feverishly indulge.  You see, when it comes to these five people, this inquiring mind has a lot to learn from them so I fine-tune my questions and I listen sternly.  Thankfully, actress Emily Kaye is one of these people I am referring to.  You want to know the other four, don’t you?  Really?  Alright.  You practically forced it out of me anyway.  They are Rob Zombie, Adam Green, Jesse Dayton and Danielle Harris.  Are you happy now?  So the real reason, once again, that we are gathered here today is to shine that bright proverbial spotlight on an actress people will be seeing a lot of very soon. And You Thought You Had a “Horrible Boss”

We have all had “horrible bosses” at one point or another during our career, haven’t we?   Well I guess I should probably be addressing the 30-something year old crowd, but I truly think this topic transcends the ages, if you ask me.  And why wouldn’t you?   I’m kind of the authority around here, am I not?  God!   I dislike pompous people.  That’s why I’m going to start this review all over again.  Are you ready?  Good!  Let’s go!  Good day ladies and gentlemen.  Today we are gathered to talk about the all too familiar topic of “horrible bosses,” oops…I mean the film Horrible Bosses.  That was better, huh?
