‘Larry Crowne’ Is Nice Enough To Just Not Care

I guess Tom Hanks could at least receive a “Thanks For Trying” award.  Back in 1996, Hanks made his directorial debut with That Thing You Do, a film that oozes likable charm.  Now, he has made Larry Crowne, a film that oozes something else.  I am not sure what it is that drove Hanks to co-write and direct this film, but I can only assume that he had a lot of fun making it, because the end results don’t match up very well.  One would think it would be tough to make a bad film about ostensibly nice people, all nice and having a good time, complete with a happy ending, but Larry Crowne manages to do just that. Cedar Rapids: The Super Awesome Edition (Blu-ray Review)

I was happy to be able to revisit Cedar Rapids.  I thought it was a very charming comedy that was unfortunately only able to be seen in limited release, during its theatrical run.  Fortunately, the Blu-ray for this film is now available and many can now buy or rent this sweet-natured, raunchy comedy.  It helps that the disc looks great and packs a nice set of special features as well.  I am not about to say that this is the best comedy of the year, but the film does have a lot of good laughs and all of the actors share great chemistry here.  Certainly worth a look, so scroll on down and read a bit more about the film and this disc. Transformers – Headmasters (DVD Review)

Transformers – Headmasters represents the missing link in the Transformer mythology for American audiences since the show only aired in Japan.  The toy-line was made by the company Takara, were originally known as the Diaclone and Microman’s Micro Change toy-lines, which were re-branded as “Transformers” by Hasbro when the toys were brought to the U.S. market.   Takara imported the original series to sell their toys until they felt they could do it on their own and created their own series known as Transformers – Headmasters which took place after the events of Generation 1 (More Than Meets the Eye) that aired in America.  While most of the continuity from the original show was retained, there were some differences between the two such as how the Headmasters were created. Why So Blu hasn’t done a lot of coverage on gaming lately, but hopefully with the help of Wizards of the Coast, that will change quite a bit.  To kick off our new focus on gaming, Wizards of the Coast was kind enough to send me their Essential Dungeons and Dragons Starter Kit with the new 4th Edition rules.  This set is the best way to start playing the 4th Edition Dungeons & Dragons Fantasy Roleplaying Game since it has everything you need to get started.  Designed for 1–5 players, this boxed game contains everything needed to start playing the Dungeons & Dragons Fantasy Role-playing Game, including rules for creating heroes, advice for playing the Dungeon Master, a solo play adventure, and group-play adventure content. The Lincoln Lawyer (Blu-ray Review)

I am thrilled that a new Matthew McConaughey movie has arrived at my door.  While I love Matthew McConaughey in a completely superficial way (he’s hot), I’m glad to see that this isn’t the millionth Matthew McConaughey romantic comedy.  While he does a great job as a romantic comedy lead, most of those movies are identical, and I do think that given the chance, he can really shine in a dramatic role.  This movie is based on the best-selling novel by Michael Connelly which focuses on an attorney named Mitch Haller (McConaughey) that has spent most of his career defending gutter-variety criminals,  until he takes on a case that could land him a real office, instead of running his practice out of his old Lincoln.  Haller reaches a crisis of conscious, though, while working on the defense of Beverly Hills playboy Louis Roulet (Phillippe).

Transformers 3: Boom Boom Bay

Throughout time, as far as Autobots are concerned, it has always been important to fight for what is right.  I think Michael Bay believes in what is right, I really do.  His more is more approach has proven to be poison from a critical standpoint, but I truly believe that he enjoys being able to deliver satisfying action and mayhem to audiences around the globe.  These Transformers films have certainly given him the opportunity to do things that have not been done before and it stands to reason that the fun element has been embraced by many.  This latest entry is pure spectacle through and through.  It delivers (especially in the final hour) a ridiculous amount of momentous special effects, all very shiny and presented in glorious 3D. Billy The Exterminator – Season 3 (DVD Review)

I am terrified of bugs and all things of the creepy crawly variety.  In addition I have a completely irrational fear of flying things (especially bees), particularly those small enough to fly into my ear canal.  A quick google search reveals that my abnormal and persistent fear of insects is called entomophobia. As a life long entomophobe, the fact that I am a loyal viewer of Billy the Exterminator just goes to show you how entertaining Billy Bretherton and family can be.  I watch every single episode – event the ones with spiders and cockroaches confident in the knowledge that those scurrying little devils will soon meet their maker when Vexcon is called. The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert (Blu-ray Review)

They always say that films featuring the identical subject matter come in two’s.  This happened in the mid 90’s with To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything! Julie Newmar and Australia’s The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert. A little over fifteen years have passed since Priscilla made her debut in cinemas and she is now ready to be unleashed on the Blu-ray format!  How will it fair against its contemporaries?  The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert is not a traditional musical, but does feature performances by men in drag.  These things are only a side note, because The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert is a lot more than just drag queens.  Get on the bus and find out what all the fuss is about!  Continue reading ‘The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert (Blu-ray Review)’

New York, New York (Blu-ray Review)

Acclaimed director Martin Scorsese teams with Academy Award winners Liza Minnelli and Robert De Niro in this splashy, flashy musical spectacle celebrating the glorious days of the Big Band Era in the Big Apple!  Jimmy is a joint-jump in saxophonist on his way to stardom.  Francine is a wannabe starlet who dreams of singing in the spotlight.  When they meet, sparks fly and when he plays and she sings, they set New York on fire! It’s the beginning of a stormy relationship, as the two struggle to balance their passions for music and each other under the pressures of big-time show biz. Clear the theater, the heavyweight champ has arrived!  Transformers: Dark of the Moon returns just in time to remind us just what a Hollywood Blockbuster looks like after a summer of mediocrity.  Transformers: DOTM arrives in a tour de force, staying true to its cheesy comic relief, PG-13 language and sensuality, but delivering on action, action, action for those of us who can’t get enough of the hot cars and industrial vehicles morphing into warriors while driving 100mph. Original Sin (Blu-ray Review)

To say that time really flies when reviewing Blu-ray discs would be an understatement.  Has it really been 10-11 years since Original Sin premiered in theaters to critical dismay?  It seems like only yesterday that this film, or the anticipation of this film, was creating a bit of a stir do to the steamy starring duo of beautiful people like Antonio Banderas and Angelina Jolie.  I remember watching the theatrical trailer and thinking that they really pulled out all the stops in a traditional romance tale.  Yes, that was just in the trailer.  Now that we are in the present, it was finally time to sit down with the newly minted Blu-ray in hand and see if Original Sin was truly as bad as they had said it was.  You may be pleasantly surprised at the results.  I know I was.  Continue reading ‘Original Sin (Blu-ray Review)’

Amazon’s Deal of the Week – The Sound of Music Limited Edition Box Set for $38.99 (57% off)!

At last the hills are alive with the Sound of Music on Blu-ray! This is is one of my all time favorite musicals (a genre that doesn’t have that many movies that interest me) and one of the movies that never fails to cheer me up.  After all, it was brilliantly directed by Robert Wise and has a stellar cast, great songs and choreography, and breathtaking panoramic visuals that just beg for the Blu-ray treatment.  This movie was nominated for 10 Academy Awards and won Best Picture, Best Director (Robert Wise), Best Musical Score, Best Editing, and Best Sound.  Julie Andrews was absolutely fantastic in this and this became one of her signature roles (the other being Mary Poppins).  If you’d like to read my review of the stand-alone Blu-ray release for this movie, you can do that here, but this is the ultimate box set that has even more goodies than the one I reviewed! This deal lasts this week only so make sure you get your copy while you can! Continue reading ‘Amazon’s Deal of the Week – The Sound of Music Limited Edition Box Set for $38.99 (57% off)!’

The Boondocks Saints: Truth & Justice Edition (Blu-ray Review)

The 1999 cult hit, The Boondock Saints has become an interesting sort of film to write about.  There are various camps that acknowledge the film differently.  Some see it as a fun, Tarantino-lite sort of film.  Others find it to be way too derivative and all style, blood, and swearing.  Then you have the frat boy devotees to everything that is Boondock Saint-related.  Finally, there is the set of folk that are indifferent, due to their feelings regarding writer/director Troy Duffy and his ego, when it came to his short-lived time as a Hollywood wunderkind, based on how he’s portrayed in the documentary Overnight, about Duffy’s rise to fame.  I am no superfan, but I did see this film when it was initially released on DVD, had a good time with it, and continue to do so. Sucker Punch (Blu-ray Review)

Since the film’s theatrical release, it has been very interesting to hear everyone’s thoughts on Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch.  I have people in my life that very much opposed the film, going as far to say its subject matter is an abomination of the screenplay format, and others like me who can’t wait to view it again and see if this 18 minutes of extra footage on the Blu-ray makes this worth our while.  Yep, that’s right.  You heard me correctly.  This Warner Bros. Blu-ray contains an Extended Cut of the film that adds an extra whopping serving of 18 minutes of footage and even bumps the film’s rating up from PG-3 to an R.   You got to love that, huh?   But the main question you are all probably dying to know is whether or not that 18 minutes is enough to make this a somewhat enjoyable film and warrant a purchase, rather than the theatrical presentation we all suffered through.  That question and more is what I hope to address below so if you pardon me, I have some writing to do.
