With 2011 stinkers like Sucker Punch and Thor (IMO) out there, I don’t get as excited about upcoming films as I used to, but one press release, I did not so long ago, really peaked my curiosity. After watching the movie’s trailer I found myself actually looking forward to a film other than The Hangover: Part II. Basically, the film’s logline did me in. It simply reads: GRIEF-STRICKEN PARENTS TRY TO BRING THEIR DAUGHTER BACK FROM THE DEAD IN A THRILLER FROM THE MOST FAMOUS NAME IN HORROR. Now dissected, there’s a lot in that logline for me to love. You have a story about bringing someone back from the dead. I’m always fascinated about that subject, as I want to learn how to do it myself one day. You have a tale about grief-stricken parents. What kind of person can’t sympathize with that? And finally, you have the last line that tells you this film comes from the most famous name in horror. Now come one! Admit it. All good things must come to an end, so here is the final Blu-ray music review brought to you by Why So Blu and Eagle Rock Entertainment. It is the David Byrne concert documentary entitled Ride, Rise, Roar. Yes, that is the same David Byrne of Talking Heads fame. His solo performance has been given the royal treatment in this high definition Blu-ray disc. Featured in Ride, Rise, Roar is an eclectic performance featuring contemporary dancers, Byrne rocking out, and several documentary segments. Getting into this disc, I was aware who comedian Bill Hicks was, but I had not watched much of his stand up. Now consistently ranked high on lists concerning the top stand up comedians of all time, Bill Hicks unfortunately passed away in 1994 at the age of 32, due to pancreatic cancer. Hicks was known for evolving his comedy act into a much darker showcase of his humor, where he developed lots of controversial material involving social commentary in regards to issues like consumerism and pop culture in general, as well as literally challenging the audience during his shows. This film is a documentary about his life and evolution as a comedian, featuring lots of archival footage and interviews with those closest to him. It is sad when a movie, capable of being better than its actual results, goes down the inevitable path of disappointment. Initial footage of Green Lantern was met with lukewarm reactions. The completely computer generated costume never seemed to click with the masses. Only the power of Ryan Reynolds’ charisma and the intrigue that stems from seeing a live action Green Lantern using imagination-based abilities seemed to be giving people hope. I had remained cautiously optimistic in anticipation of the film’s release, but alas, despite a lot of entertaining and well put together portions, the film did not end up working for me as a whole. Much like my Blu-ray review of last year’s Burlesque (see here), I know I’m going to get bashed here. For some reason, the critics didn’t receive Battle: Los Angeles too well. Well la deed da. What the f#$k do they know? I guess they are all dead inside and truly don’t know how to have a good time by letting go and escaping reality for a little bit. This movie never claimed to be another Platoon or Saving Private Ryan, but instead it sought out to do just what 1996’s Independence Day did, captivate and entertain audiences with its non-stop alien warfare and adrenalized action. On those levels, I believe very much that it succeeded. Battle: Los Angeles has been one of my most anticipated film this year ever since I saw the panel at last year’s Comic-Con (see here). Is that hardcore or what? Ha ha. I really don’t care if you think it’s hardcore or not. That’s just filler to make this first paragraph longer so it looks good on the web page. I find it interesting that I have gotten to see both Beginners and Submarine within the span of the same week. Both films are engaging, romantic, comedic dramas, which use quirky sensibilities that manage to both give the film a unique voice and feel as though it is working hard to be different. Keeping both of these thoughts in mind, I am happy that I really enjoyed these films, but for different reasons. In Beginners, I admired the performances, among other aspects of that film. For Submarine, the subject of this review, I admired the film’s cold sense of humor. If I had to use another movie to describe this movie as a spring board, Submarine is essentially a very British version of Rushmore, with some more obscure qualities. I remember last year sitting outside the 6,000-seat capacity Hall H at the San Diego Convention Center. It was a cool, gray-skyed morning as the line of pedestrian traffic snaked around the dewy grass. We all shared a common eagerness to experience the discussion panel of the Green Lantern. The almost-year since then has passed quickly and the Lantern Corp is upon us as Ryan Reynolds takes the famed oath, dons the ring and stars as the emerald hero!

With the release of the 1988 romantic comedy, Mystic Pizza, onto Blu-ray it must have been obvious that I was of course the one member of Why So Blu who was meant to cover it. Ok, so maybe that’s not quite the case, but I did receive it and I did watch it, so an appropriate review is going to be provided. Having not seen Mystic Pizza before, I was at the very least intrigued by a film that had a younger Julia Roberts, before she was a much bigger star and seemed more like an actress and less like a movie star.
