NBFF Review: The Perfect Host

I feel like I have done something wrong in picking out films to watch during the 12th Annual Newport Beach Film Festival.  Besides my initial screening, every film that I have seen so far has been very good.  Wednesday night, May 4, 2011, was no different, as I got to watch another highly entertaining feature.  This time it was an offbeat thriller, The Perfect Host, in which a criminal cons his way into the house of a man planning to throw a dinner party, only to have the tables turned on him in the worst possible way. The Future is Always in Motion – New Details on the Star Wars Saga’s Blu-rays! Updated with Cover Art!

Today as part of Star Wars Day, Lucasfilm finally spilled the beans on the details on the upcoming Star Wars Blu-ray box sets.  While I don’t think they’ve told us everything, there is still a lot to be excited about.  They will now be in 6.1 DTS Surround Sound and there’s over forty hours of special features!  There’s still no word on whether or not the original theatrical editions will be included or not, but hopefully that’s something they are saving as a surprise for later.  I’m sure there will be more information given at Comic-Con this year, but there’s still been a lot of cool things revealed today! Take a look at the details below and May the Fourth Be With You! Continue reading ‘The Future is Always in Motion – New Details on the Star Wars Saga’s Blu-rays! Updated with Cover Art!’

Aaron’s Top 15 Most Anticipated Films of Summer 2011

So the time has come to prepare for the onslaught of summer blockbuster entertainment.  I previously put together a list of films I anticipated for the spring, and with that now out of the way, it’s time for the next stage of this year – massively large budgeted entertainment.  The number of films coming out this summer is so large that I had to add an extra five films to the list, because a top ten just wouldn’t cut it.  Once again, I use the term “summer” loosely.  I am not going by the actual start and end of the summer; I am going by the summer film season, which begins at the start of May and ends at the start of September.  As far as these choices go, the dates are subject to change, but at this point, they should mostly be sticking to these release dates.  So with all of that out of the way, let’s get to the flicks: Continue reading ‘Aaron’s Top 15 Most Anticipated Films of Summer 2011’

NBFF Review: Der Sandmann (The Sandman)

Tuesday night for the Newport Beach Film Festival was an international showcase night, featuring films from countries including France, Sweden, Australia, and Switzerland, which is the country where the filmmakers responsible for Der Sandmann have come from.  Once again, I have chosen wisely, as Der Sandmann is a wonderful film that managed to bring a fantastical element into the realm of a romantic comedy.  It is a sweet and funny film, but also charming in the way this fantasy element adds to the film’s imagination and spirit.  Settling into strange territory, this is the kind of romantic comedy that I can enjoy; one that is original, with interesting ideas that are well thought out, while still maintaining the right kind of emotional backing. Katrina Bowden Joins The Cast of Dimension Films’ Piranha 3DD!

I’m excited about this news.  It’s not because it’s about a sexy female, but because it involves the sequel to one of my favorites from 2010 (see here).  Of course I’m talking about the upcoming November release of Piranha 3DD.  Katrina Bowden, star of 30 Rock and recently named Esquire Magazine’s 2011 Sexiest Woman Alive, will be seen galavanting around in Dimension Films’ Piranha 3DD this fall.   Bowden has been added to the already busy menu which includes Gary Busey, Danielle Panabaker, Matt Bush, Chris Zylka, David Koechner, Meagan Tandy, Paul James Jordan, Jean-Luc Bilodeau, Hector Jimenez, Adrian Martinez, and Clu Gulager.  Piranha 3DD will be released November 23rd.  Production on the film started just last week.  I’m a bit nervous though…that’s a pretty fast turn around time. Mortal Kombat: Legacy – Ep. 4 – Kitana & Mileena (Part 1)

This week’s episode of the Mortal Kombat web series is a nice change in pace and may be the best episode yet. It does not feature much action and the running time once again lasts a little less than 10 minutes, including credits, but we learn a lot of backstory about several classic Mortal Kombat characters. We get to see the land of Outworld for the first time, where the characters of Shao Kahn, Baraka, Mileena, Kitana and Sindel are all introduced. This episode also benefits from a change up in its style. Along with live action set pieces (which really stretch the budget, given the look of Baraka), this episode features a number of motion comic-styled animated sequences to provide for some of the more abstract designs from within Outworld. It was also nice to see this episode not retrain from Mortal Kombat-style bloody violence, which was missing from last week. Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane is the man behind American Dad which centers around CIA Agent Stan Smith and his family and their wacky adventures.  Stan’s family consists of his wife Francine, daughter Hayley and son Steve, and an alien named Roger.  Roger was rescued from Area 51 by Stan and most days Roger makes Stan regret that decision.  Last but not least is Klaus – a German man trapped in a goldfish body.  American Dad could have easily been called Craziest Family Ever. NBFF Review: Redline

It was a Monday night Asian showcase on May 2, 2011, for the Newport Beach Film Festival.  The films featured as spotlight screenings were all products of Asian filmmakers.  To continue to mix up the types of movies I have seen so far, I chose Redline, the first anime film to be featured as a Spotlight Screening for the NBFF.  I ended up making a fantastic choice, as Redline was a hugely entertaining film.  The film is a sci-fi auto racing-themed work of art, featuring incredible animation, a knowingly over-the-top style & story, memorable & hilarious characters, and some slick animated racing action.  I had a ton of fun watching this film, especially in my drive to appreciate anime more. Deep Red (Blu-ray Review)

Blue Underground continues to show mad love for Dario Argento on Blu-ray as do we in reviewing Dario Argento films on Why So Blu.  The latest offering from the Italian master of horror is his film Deep Red which is separate from his “Animal” trilogy and came before Suspiria. Argento was busy during the 70’s for sure!  Blue Underground has remastered and produced BOTH  versions of Deep Red. There is the 105 minute English version and the 126 minute Italian cut of the film.  The following review of Deep Red will contain information of what both cuts of the film have to offer as opposed to two separate reviews.  Come on in and take a stroll into darkness with Deep Red on Blu-ray!   Continue reading ‘Deep Red (Blu-ray Review)’

Serving as a warm-up and placeholder for the upcoming Avengers movie, The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes airs on the Disney XD channel and has now been released on DVD. This action-packed superhero series features Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Ant-Man, Wasp, Black Panther, Nick Fury, and The Hulk. There’s also appearances from the Fantastic Four and some of the other heroes and villains from the Marvel Universe. These two volumes offer a continuing storyline and true to character portrayals. While the animation could be better, this new series is the best animated show Marvel has released to date. NBFF Review: A Bag of Hammers

For my screening on the fourth night of the 12th Annual Newport Beach Film Festival, I managed to be pleasantly surprised by A Bag of Hammers.  Going into the film, I was expecting to maybe have a good laugh at a simple comedy; however, I was delighted to see that the film not only accomplished having a comedic touch, but found very solid footing in balancing what turned out to be a comedic drama.  This was a very good film that I was happy to have enjoyed deeply and I attribute many of the film’s charming qualities, such as its strong writing and dialogue, solid performances, and great chemistry between all of the actors, to that conclusion.  While the film may reach a few points of being a tad too dark, with a story that is not entirely unpredictable, these minor issues hardly effect a film that is very well crafted and highly entertaining. Beverly Hills Cop (Blu-ray Review)

Cue the synth theme!  Don’t try to play it off, you know exactly what synth theme I am talking about.  It’s the theme that once you hear it it stays in your head and you begin humming or whistling it all day long.  That would be the Beverly Hills Cop theme, and you can now listen to it in all its lossless glory!  Eddie Murphy stars alongside a who’s who of crazy and eclectic characters dispensing his own brand of streetwise justice on the glitzy streets of Beverly Hills.  Besides 48Hrs., Beverly Hills Cop was one of the first films to define the wisecracking-buddy cop films that were soon to follow in abundance.  It’s actually no surprise that Beverly Hills Cop was a Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson vehicle.  How does the Beverly Hills Cop Blu-ray stack up to scrutiny?  Come in and find out!  Continue reading ‘Beverly Hills Cop (Blu-ray Review)’

NBFF Review: Project Nim

The 12th Annual Newport Beach Film Festival’s screening of Project Nim was one of the screenings I was most anticipating.  Project Nim is the new documentary from director James March, who previously made the Oscar winning documentary Man on Wire.  Since Man on Wire was both an incredibly well crafted documentary and also one of the most enjoyable docs I had ever seen, his latest feature about Nim, a famous chimpanzee from the 70s, was one I was going to give the benefit of the doubt to and hope for the best.  Once again, Marsh has made a film that is incredibly well crafted, but the enjoyable factor is replaced by a story that is somewhat comic, but more revealing, and fairly unsettling at times.  All of this is to say that Project Nim is another great film from Marsh, not as a crowd pleaser, but as an emotional journey.
