‘Being Human’ is Syfy’s Big Winner

So a vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost move in together.  It sounds like the makings of a bar joke, doesn’t it?  It’s actually the basis for the Syfy channel’s Being Human, a show that is anything but a joke.  Originally a product of the UK, Being Human has made its way to the US and Canada with a new cast courtesy of the Syfy channel with its first season airing now.  So what exactly does this show bring to the table and who’s in it?

A Talk With Disney’s Glen Keane About Tangled

I had the privilege of talking to Glen Keane when Beauty and the Beast was released on Blu-ray and last week I got another chance to talk to him about Tangled.  Mr. Keane is not only a legendary Disney animator, but he was also the original director of Tangled before becoming the Executive Producer and Supervising Animator for the film.  Continue reading ‘A Talk With Disney’s Glen Keane About Tangled’

Get ‘Wrecked’ with Adrien Brody

Here’s a special announcement from our friends at IFC Midnight for the film Wrecked starring Adrien Brody.  Brody plays a man who has awakened at the bottom of a cliff.  He has no memory of how or why he’s down there.  Battered, bloody, and bruised, he will try to free himself from the wreckage.  Wrecked will be opening up in limited release in New York on April 1st, and Los Angeles on April 8th.  Wrecked is currently available On Demand.  This gives new meaning to the phrase “you better check yourself before you wreck yourself.” Enjoy the trailer!  Continue reading ‘Get ‘Wrecked’ with Adrien Brody’

Fair Game (Blu-ray Review)

Fair Game is a film about how Valerie Plame Wilson’s secret role as a agent for the CIA was blown due for political reasons when her husband Joe Wilson wrote an op-ed piece in the New York Times decrying the intelligence being used to justify a war in Iraq.  Directed by Doug Liman who also directed The Bourne Identity, Fair Game is an interesting glimpse into some real life events that exposed some ugly truths about politics and international brinkmanship. ‘Kill the Irishman’ Relives Life of Mobster Danny Greene

Mobster movies and shows like Goodfellas and The Sopranos always bring out that underworld fascination with American audiences. The lifestyles are so provocative, violent and immoral, yet many, myself included, flock to this material like moths to a flame. The latest in the line of American mafia flicks is Kill the Irishman and contains an impressive array of actors from the likes of Val Kilmer to Christopher Walken to Paul Sorvino. Probably best known for his role as Titus Pullo in HBO’s Rome, is Irishman‘s leading man, Ray Stevenson.

A Talk With the Directors of Tangled

Last Wednesday I had the pleasure to talk with the directors of Tangled, Nathan Greno and Byron Howard and was graciously given a chance to ask them some questions thanks to the fine folks that handle publicity for Disney.  It was great to be able to talk to both of them about the movie and also about the upcoming Blu-ray which I had already fortunately reviewed before our talk.  You can read my review of the Blu-ray set here.  I hope you enjoy the interview as much as I did, since both of them were a lot of fun to talk to. IFC Films: Official Trailer for “Cave of Forgotten Dreams”

Our friends over at IFC Films have sent us the release information for  Werner Herzog’s Cave of Forgotten Dreams. This documentary was shot in actual native 3D, so expect great visuals from the amazing Werner Herzog.  Herzog and his skeleton crew of technicians will journey deep into the Chauvet Cave in France which features drawings from early man believed to be about 30,000 years old.  Judging from the trailer footage you would think that these cave man artisans were early versions of Da Vinci or Rembrandt.  I’m just giddy over the fact that out of all people to get into the 3D mix it was Werner Herzog.  It will be an epic win of enormous proportions!   Continue reading ‘IFC Films: Official Trailer for “Cave of Forgotten Dreams”’

Hitch A Ride With ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’, If You Can Afford It

For a March release coming out a week after winter’s summer film – Battle: Los Angeles, it certainly feels like The Lincoln Lawyer is quite the event itself.  Ads have been everywhere for this movie, but I can certainly see its appeal.  There is a large list of actors involved, the story is based off of a bestselling novel, and courtroom dramas tend to be quite appealing for audiences. Treme: Season One (Blu-ray Review)

Treme is a show created by David Simon (The Wire) and it takes place in New Orleans three months after the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. This dramatic show has a lot to say about life in New Orleans and shows the anger and desperation of the people who are still struggling to survive there.  The show focuses on the lives of regular people trying to rebuild their lives, their businesses, and their homes after the costliest natural disaster to ever hit the United States. Hereafter (Blu-ray Review)

Clint Eastwood and Matt Damon have re-teamed to bring us the psychological thriller-drama Hereafter.  This is Clint’s thirty fifth film as director.  The subject  matter depicted in Hereafter may offend or disturb certain individuals with the recent tragedy in Japan.  It truly is art imitating life.  Hereafter was pulled from theaters due to the sensitivity of the material there.  How does Hereafter stack up with Clint’s other dynamic body of work?  He’s been cranking them out every year or two for  the last few years.  Let’s see if Hereafter stacks up to his previous releases.  Continue reading ‘Hereafter (Blu-ray Review)’

I Had A Fun, Close Encounter With ‘Paul’

It seems like 2011 is going to be littered with aliens and otherworldly beings.  Paul falls into that category and I feel I must clarify what it is, as the TV spots I have seen for it do really poor justice to what is quite a funny movie.  Paul is an R-rated, road trip, buddy comedy with an extraterrestrial twist.  If features a great cast of comedic actors and has been written as a geek-friendly love letter to Steven Spielberg. Continue reading ‘I Had A Fun, Close Encounter With ‘Paul’’

Lord of the Dance 3D – Footwork Wows, Not 3D

Michael Flatley has come a long way from his early days in Chicago to a worldwide star.  The most successful dancer of all time took an art form that is hundreds of years old and lit the fuse in his own characteristic style, creating an Irish dance blitzkrieg that took over the planet in the late 90’s.   Since that time, Flatley has created a few other shows along the way in the form of Feet of Flames and Celtic Tiger, and while each attracted audiences in explosive numbers, neither ever changed the landscape quite like Lord of the Dance (LOTD) did.  In a late 2010 reunion, Flatley once again took the mantle as Lord of the Dance for a brief but highly successful European tour, but this driven individual did not stop there.  Not only did Flatley return in LOTD, he brought it to us in 3D.

Tangled 2D/3D (Blu-ray Review)

Tangled marks Walt Disney’s 50th animated feature film and it’s a fitting choice since it seems to bridge the company’s legendary legacy of traditional animation with the new focus on computer animation.  Although the film is entirely CGI, Disney has perfected it so well that it’s taken what worked traditionally and integrated it into computer animation seamlessly. Inferno (Blu-ray Review)

We told you we would be back with more material from our friends over at Blue Underground and here we are.  WhySoBlu? is proud to present Dario Argento’s Inferno on Blu-ray!  Dario Argento is one of Italy’s premiere old school horror directors along with Lucio Fulci, but whose material is totally different from one another in some aspects.  Inferno can be considered the middle film in The Three Mothers trilogy.  Suspiria came before, and The Mother of Tears after.  I have not seen either of those, so take this unbiased review as you will.  I look forward to more Dario Argento material on Blu-ray in the future for review.  Continue reading ‘Inferno (Blu-ray Review)’
