To be very matter-of-fact, I Love You Phillip Morris is based on a true story about a gay con artist, who managed to escape prison many times and also fell in love with one of his fellow inmates, Phillip Morris. Despite its seemingly unique premise and the presence of Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor in lead roles, the film has been bouncing around for a couple years, trying to find a U.S. distributor. Four years ago we caught a glimpse of a fake trailer that would forever change the world of exploitation cinema for years to come. Machete! Originally used as a trailer to open Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror, fan reaction was enormous and the world wanted a full feature based on this mythical killing machine. Robert Rodriguez made mention that he already had a script, but was too busy working on other projects to dedicate himself to Machete alone. Some of these projects did not come to fruition, so now he had some time to tackle the one Mexican you don’t want to mess with. Continue reading ‘Machete (Blu-ray Review)’

If you are a fan of The History Channel’s series “The Universe,” you may have seen this segment during Season 5’s run. The difference between the episode on this disc and the one on the Season 5 set is that this one is in both 2D and 3D whereas the season set only offers the 2D version. For those of you that aren’t aware of the show, it’s a documentary series that premiered in 2007 on The History Channel that explains astronomical concepts and objects through the use of computer generated graphics and a group of experts whose expertise includes astronomy, cosmology, and astrophysics. While this movie wasn’t a box office smash, it was well received on the indie circuit and its tale of a man and his imaginary superhero friend is now available on Blu-ray. The movie came about during a bleak time for the husband and wife team of Kieran and Michele Mulroney who almost had their Justice League movie filmed until it was canceled at the last minute which left them despondent over show business. They wrote and directed this movie during that period when they weren’t sure if they even wanted to continue in their profession.

It was in in the first half of 2010 when I came across the trailer for Nicholas Cage in Season of the Witch. As the months left the calendar, my interest for this film remained in some deep, dark corner of my brain, though its title escaped me. It wasn’t until a month ago when I saw a movie poster that my waning curiousity for the film was revived. Nicholas Cage has not exactly been a fan favorite at the box office in recent memory. Will his Hollywood stature of old be rekindled? Or will Season of the Witch continue the Oscar-winner’s hex?

In the interest of full disclosure, the Beatles are my favorite band and I’ve enjoyed all of their post-Beatles efforts as well. Now that that’s out of the way, LENNONYC is a glimpse into the life of John Lennon after the Beatles disbanded and he moved to New York City with Yoko Ono. The Time That Remains is a film that is broken into vignettes and tells the story of writer/director Elia Suleiman who hilariously inserts himself in the vignettes themselves as an “observer” type of character. The story takes place from 1948 to the present. Watching the trailer, I was taken by its almost whimsical tone. It was almost like watching a silent movie with sound. IFC Films is proud to present The Time That Remains. The film opens opens this Friday, 1/7/11 at the IFC Center in NYC and is available nationwide on demand starting on 1/5/11. One of my top ten films of 2010, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps hits Blu-ray for the first time, but it is it worth it? Is it worth spending your hard earned cash or precious time to check out the world that was first introduced in that glorious year that was 1987? Well, that’s kind of subjective, and somewhat of a loaded question. If you’re ready to continue the adventures of Wall Street and then you need to read the following review of Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. I did not get a chance to check this one out in the theaters, but I was very interested in seeing it. The reviews have been mixed for the most part, but I think I will give it a shot this February. Dreamworks has just announced a February 25th Blu-ray release date for the animated film starring the voices of Will Ferrell and Brad Pitt. I don’t have any 3-D details, but I do have the list of special features that will be found within. Ready? Continue reading ‘‘Megamind’ Brainstorms a Blu-ray Release Date’

A new year, a new scare. What would 2011 be without the upcoming Halloween franchise that will probably replace the Saw series for the moment? I’m talking Paranormal Activity 2 folks. Paramount has officially made plans to bring the thriller to Blu-ray as an Unrated Director’s Cut on February 8th. The release will see a DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio surround track and will feature a DVD and Digital Copy of the Unrated film. Bonus materials are as follows. The great thing about the Playstation Store is the amount of highly entertaining games that can be had for those frugal at heart. With games usually topping out at a cost of $14.99 and most hovering around $9.99, you can build quite a library on your PS3’s hard drive in no time. One of the most recent additions to store is Marvel Pinball, brought to us from Zen Studios, creators of Zen Pinball. Pinball tends to focus on a specific audience and can easily fail in the transition from physical table to video game. Does Marvel Pinball do the format any justice? It seems like it’s that time of year again. End of the year picks for the top movies, in our opinions. Well, I am as egotistical as anyone, and like to have my views known (wink, wink), so here are my picks for the best of 2010. I see by reading the other posters here that some of our picks are similar, while we differ on a few others. They will come around to my way of thinking sooner or later. Ha Ha…It was a pretty good year for movies, and here’s hoping 2011 brings even better fare. Let me know what you think of my choices. (Hey, at least mine are the shortest!) Have fun! Jiminy Critic

And I can’t be more thrilled about it! This film was pulled right from under me the day I planned on checking it out in the theater. And I didn’t want to ruin it for myself by watching some crappy VOD version of it so I have been holding out for its eventual Blu-ray release. Thankfully, my wait is almost over! Adam Green’s Unrated Director’s Cut of Hatchet II will slash onto the Blu-ray format on February 1st. Did you hear what I said Sean? I said Adam Green’s Hatchet II! Pre-order your copy now! Before I go on vacation I thought I would throw up a Blu-ray press release for one of Aaron Neuwirth’s favorite films of 2010 (just kidding Aaron). Anyway, Warner has announced a February 8th Blu-ray release date for the Josh Duhamel/Katherine Heigl romantic comedy, Life As We Know It. The title will arrive on Blu-ray as part of a combo pack with a DVD and Digital Copy of the film. The audio is slated to be a DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio surround track and special features include the following. Continue reading ‘‘Life As We Know it’ on Blu-ray’

If you enjoyed the first two Family Guy Star Wars spoofs (Blue Harvest and Something Something Dark Side) like me, then you will probably enjoy the final installment in the saga, It’s a Trap! I’ve always been impressed with how much effort the Family Guy team puts into matching the source movies down to the smallest details such as the music cues and the editing with its dead on accuracy that thrills the inner Star Wars geek in me.
