Of all the recent, popular, fantasy book series that have been adapted into films since the initial launch of the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings films, C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia series is the only one that I have read all the way through. It has been unfortunate that I have not been very impressed by the first two film entries. I was disappointed by ‘Wardrobe,’ and while I thought Prince Caspian was better (despite heading into a more disturbingly dark direction, while still being rated PG), I felt it still had problems finding the way to handle the world of Narnia. David Milch has been involved in or co-created some of the most memorable shows in television history. With a career going back to Hill Street Blues, or more recently the fantastic NYPD Blue, Milch has always done exceptional work. Deadwood is his tour de force and the culmination of a brilliant career. The series was nominated for twenty-two Emmys, won seven, and also won a Golden Globe for Ian McShane’s performance. In the spirit of full disclosure, Recipe for a Perfect Christmas is 100% chick flick, brought to you by Lifetime. As I am, in fact a “chick” I may be genetically predisposed to liking such films. Those of you with overwhelming testosterone levels should know that there are no explosions, nudity, or gunfights.

A&E brings you Billy the Exterminator, my new favorite reality show. As the title suggests, Billy Bretherton is an exterminator. He runs the family business, Vex Con – a very busy company located in Lousiana. Billy and his team remove everything from cockroaches to alligators and it does not appear as though he ever turns down a job. Billy and his family are as white trash as they come, but somehow it’s part of their charm. Continue reading ‘Billy the Exterminator Season One (DVD Review)’

My good friend has a one-word saying where if something is just barely plausible in her opinion she will respond by saying “meh.” Honest to God, I can’t think of a better word to describe The Tourist. When she asked me today how the film was I was not quick enough to respond in the language only she would truly understand (the use of the slang word “meh”). Instead I used my intellectual vocabulary (yeah right) to simply state that I needed another viewing to formulate a true opinion of the flick, but after just chatting with fellow reviewer Aaron Neuwirth, I no longer think that is necessary. No pain, no gain. It’s a saying that’s nearly been used to death, to the point where one may cringe when it’s mentioned. Sure, that unpleasant facial expression may be one of tiredness from hearing the cliché. Or, the grimace may be one of experience, drawn on the physical durability that’s been humbled through trial and tribulation. The latter is not simply somewhat befitting of Master John Kim, but one he can certainly relate to and speak freely on. The martial arts instructor took some time to meet with Why So Blu this past week, discussing his fighting history and abilities as well as those of his students. Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland is a sequel of sorts to the original animated Walt Disney classic. It’s been thirteen years since Alice left Wonderland, and things have changed quite a bit in her life and also in Wonderland. This updated take on the classic story by Lewis Carroll, tweaked the original story in a lot of ways to make the unreal land become more real for viewers by giving the characters some history and valid reasons for their behavior. Space: 1999 is hard to categorize. It’s a mix of Forbidden Planet, Star Trek, and 2001 – A Space Odyssey and yet it’s it’s own thing as well. All of the sets for the show were supposed to be originally for the second season of creator Gerry Anderson’s show UFO, but when that was canceled he had to come up with a new plan. He retooled the show to focus on the moon-base concept that was already planned for and from that Space: 1999 was created. Continue reading ‘Space: 1999 Season One (Blu-ray Review)’

The creators of Meet the Spartans and Disaster Movie bring you a spoof of the Twilight Saga. In order to appreciate most of the jokes, you should have already seen the Twilight movies. I think people like myself are the perfect audience for this spoof. I’ve seen the Twilight movies, enjoyed them, and remember enough of the details to get the jokes. I don’t read the books, have a team Jacob T shirt, and am not offended by laughs had at the expense of the Twilight movies and characters. Off hand, I can think of a few Twilight fans that would not be amused, but many more that would. Continue reading ‘Vampires Suck (Blu-Ray Review)’

In the interest of full disclosure, the Beatles are my favorite band and I’ve enjoyed all of their post-Beatles efforts as well. Now that that’s out of the way, LENNONYC is a glimpse into the life of John Lennon after the Beatles disbanded and he moved to New York City with Yoko Ono. Lennon loved New York City and proclaimed it to be his new home but his vocal and effective anti-war stance quickly brought the full force of the U.S. Government down upon him. This is a look into the life and times of John Lennon who while trying to discover what kind of life he wanted also had to fight from being deported from America for being who he was. There may not have been any headless pigeons, but the evening was graced by the self-proclaimed Prince of Darkness nonetheless. In 1952, the NBC television network aired one of the most ambitious network documentary series ever attempted with Victory at Sea. The concept for the series came from Henry Salomon who spent his wartime service assisting historian Samuel Eliot Morison who was then writing the 15-volume History of United States Naval Operations in World War II. During that period, Salomon discovered how much footage of combat operations was available after the war which he later put to good use in Victory at Sea.
