I am going to say right now that this will be spoiler free, only detailing the basic facts that one can learn from the trailer, which also does nothing to spoil the story. The film is very interesting and engaging. It’s a well made documentary that is essentially a very sad love story. Don’t be fooled into thinking that this is another ‘found footage’ horror movie, because it isn’t. It’s hard to say this isn’t a thriller though, as unconventional of a thriller that it may be, the way this film is made certainly lends itself somewhat into that category, before evolving into something else entirely. When I first met Director/Writer Adam Green at Comic-Con this past July I thought, “oh wow, that’s a cool looking Metallica throwback t-shirt he’s wearing.” From afar, it looked like a nostalgic Ride The Lightning album t-shirt (possibly paying homage to “Trapped Under Ice”), but upon closer inspection, the Frozen movie logo was staring me right in the face (see here). Like his Hatchet film before, I had never seen Frozen, but I knew I wanted to. So after the Hatchet II panel, I immediately did what comes natural to me, YouTube! For months, people in the office tell me they can’t believe I’ve never seen CBS’s super hit comedy, The Big Bang Theory. “You’re totally cut out for that show,” one co-worker would exclaim. “What?! Watch it already!” as another would command. The fact is, I rarely watch network television. I find a lot of sitcoms poorly written and extremely contrived. Still, the geek-laden aspects of The Big Bang Theory were tempting to my otherwise TV-dormant soul. I mean, the show must have some layer of quality to it, right? Continue reading ‘The Big Bang Theory: Season 3 (Blu-ray Review)’

The Town is a very fun bank heist/cops and robbers movie. The film is Ben Affleck’s second time in the director’s chair, a follow up to the excellent Gone Baby Gone, and this film proves that he is quite capable behind the camera. The film is well made, wonderfully entertaining and backed by a strong cast. Even as it follows some familiar beats of this genre, it manages to be both a crowd- pleaser and confident in its structure. Continue reading ‘‘The Town’ is Wicked Entertainment’

Easy A is a high school comedy that tries to be a fun, modern take on The Scarlett Letter. It features Emma Stone in the lead role, basically working to establish her as a leading star. While the film is essentially a chick flick, it seems to have aspirations to push in some satirical elements surrounding the effect of gossip and the set up of high school in general. These elements are successfully met, with the script not paying off to be as witty as it thinks. Continue reading ‘An Average Grade for ‘Easy A’’

A film depicting the transition that Joaquin Phoenix the actor made into Joaquin Phoenix the bearded and overweight actor. I am not sure what I would have made of this film, had I have seen it a couple of days beforehand, when it was still unsure whether or not Phoenix had truly sworn off acting, but watching it when I did, I have mixed thoughts. On one hand it is kind of compelling to watch what is essentially a large-scale method acting performance taken to its extreme. To start things off, Devil a solid genre film. The film is the first of a film series known as “The Night Chronicles.” The films in this series will all be produced by M. Night Shyamalan, based on stories that he has come up with. Fortunately, he is not the screenwriter or director of these films. I don’t want to get into another spiel about the problems with Shyamalan, but suffice it to say that his writing has not been his strong suit in recent years. Fortunately, the crew involved in the making of this film has done a fine job at creating a short, but sweet thriller. Continue reading ‘‘Devil’ Gets its Due in This Solid Thriller’

Although I’m certainly not biggest Ben Affleck fan around, The Town is definitely one of the movies I have been looking forward to all summer long since seeing its trailer. Maybe it’s those devilish looking bank robbing masks that just remind me so much of Point Break or maybe it’s the simple fact that this film just blatantly looks so bad-a$$, but whatever it is, I was nevertheless pumped going into the press screening. With an impressive cast, an intriguing storyline (from what I knew) and a trailer that made me want to plop my hard earned cash down months ago on advance seating tickets, how could this film ever disappoint? Easy A is one of those films where let’s face it, if it were not for my wife wanting to see this, I think I could have come up with better ways to spend a free Thursday evening. But as a critic, it’s your job to subject yourself to torture and to prevent the average “Joe filmgoer” from the pain, misery and suffering, if your advice warrants so. It sounds so cruel, doesn’t it? Sometime it is. So in other words…I did this all for you ladies and gentlemen. Am I not a nice guy, or what? Continue reading ‘There’s No Such Thing As An ‘Easy A’’

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is one of those movies that has production stories just as interesting as the movie itself. Before the book was published, actor Kirk Douglas read it and bought the rights to the book and turned into a play that he took to Broadway. Despite good reviews and a great cast, the play closed after six months and Douglas went about trying to make a movie out of it. While traveling Europe, he ran into director Milos Forman and told him that he would send him a copy of the book to see if he would be interested in directing the movie. I was very happy to get this movie to review as I had missed it in the theaters and I was excited to see what Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney could do after their last swashbuckling effort resulted in the Pirates of the Caribbean series which I loved. You see, I have a serious weakness for these types of films as I love the old Errol Flynn and Douglas Fairbanks movies and nobody seems to make those kind of films anymore. I’m hoping with the success of the Pirates trilogy, the National Treasure series, and now this, that the studios will start making adventure films again. The most anticipated movie in our household (especially by my son) is finally coming November 2! Not only is Toy Story 3 getting the Blu-ray treatment, it’s also getting a deluxe box set that contains the entire trilogy and all of their special features in a replica of Andy’s wagon train toy box. Toy Story 3 dominated the box office this summer (over 1 billion dollars!) and is currently ranked as the 5th biggest worldwide movie of all time. Continue reading ‘Toy Round Up! Today, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is releasing their second 3D presentation to the Blu-ray format, Monster House. I’ve included the short press release below from Sony. Although there are no screeners available of the title, I’m interested in hearing people’s thoughts who pick this up and how the 3D effect works out for them. In addition to the filmmaker’s commentary there are a total of 8 featurettes and a photo gallery to boot. Check it out (if you have the proper hardware that is). I really can’t think of a better way to start my weekend off than to come home and find a Blu-ray review copy of Spartacus: Blood and Sand The Complete First Season sitting in my mailbox, can you? I must admit that I was quite smitten earlier this year by the Starz original series Spartacus: Blood and Sand and once again this summer at Comic-Con 2010 (see my exclusive coverage here). So smitten was I that I actually took time from my obligatory family schedule on Easter Sunday this year to reach out to the PR people at Starz and express how much my wife and I have enjoyed the Friday night programming this past winter/spring. My family and I are big Disney fans. We go to Disneyland whenever we can, we watch the Disney Channel, and we also enjoy all of the Disney/Pixar movies too. My two year old especially loves all things Disney so we watch a lot of it in our household. He seems fascinated by Tinker Bell and I’m not sure if it’s because she is cute, short, and blond which seems to be his preference or if it’s because she can fly around. Whatever the case, he is a fan of Tinker Bell and I am fond of her as well from my time growing up watching Peter Pan. Continue reading ‘Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue (Blu-ray Review)’
