To save what you love, you must become what you fear when “Keanu” arrives onto Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD. Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, a.k.a. the hugely popular comedy duo Key & Peele, star in New Line Cinema’s action comedy “Keanu.” The two play Clarence and Rell, cousins who live in the city but are far from streetwise. The film also stars Method Man (“The Fast and the Furious,” “Red Tails”) as the menacing gang leader, Cheddar; Tiffany Haddish (“Real Husbands of Hollywood”) as the stone-cold gangster, Hi-C; with Luis Guzmán (“We’re the Millers,” “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island”) as the Mexican cartel kingpin, Bacon; Nia Long (“The Best Man” films) as Clarence’s beautiful wife, Hannah; and Will Forte (“The Last Man on Earth,” “Nebraska”) as the eccentric drug dealer, Hulka. Peter Atencio (“Key and Peele,” “The Last Man on Earth”) directed the film from a script written by Jordan Peele and Alex Rubens (“Key and Peele,” “Community”). Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, Peter Principato, Paul Young and Joel Zadak produced the film, with Ben Ormand serving as executive producer. Continue reading ‘Keanu (Blu-ray Review)’

Luis Guzman (The Do-Over, Keanu, Boogie Nights) and Edgar Garcia (How to Make It in America) take the roles of two Puerto Rican NYPD officers on a Paris adventure in Puerto Ricans in Paris, which hit Digital HD on June 10, 2016, and is hitting Blu-ray, DVD, and On-Demand tomorrow August 2, 2016 courtesy of Universal Pictures. The best way I can explain this movie is it’s a dramedy, that tries way to hard to be funny, and just really isn’t. Continue reading ‘Puerto Ricans In Paris (Blu-ray Review)’

He’s back. He’s bad. And, he’s a dad! Belial, everyone’s favorite beast-in-a-basket, is back in this sensational third film in the wildly macabre BASKET CASE horror series. 1982’s BASKET CASE introduced horror fans to Duane Bradley and his twin brother Belial, and a new horror classic was born. They also introduced the world to Frank Henenlotter, the uniquely crazed talent who would later give us BRAIN DAMAGE and FRANKENHOOKER. In 1990 and ‘91, Henenlotter and star Kevin Van Hentenryck returned for two even more demented sequels, both coming to Blu-ray from Synapse Films this August (The ninth to be more specific)! See below for more details and pre-order links! Duane Bradley and his surgically-separated twin brother Belial return one last time to be the second sequel to Frank Henenlotter’s original monster movie classic, BASKET CASE. Synapse Films is proud to present BASKET CASE 3: The Progeny in a beautiful high-definition transfer from the original 35mm camera negative. This review is going to be a challenge for me. You see, I’m not the world’s biggest Watchmen fan by any means. The limited comic series of the same name bores me. I also know how devastating that must be to read in the third sentence of a review. However, let the record show, I’ve always been a fan of Zack Snyder’s movie adaptation of the property. After all, it’s what paved the way for Rated-R superhero flicks like Kick-Ass or this year’s Deadpool to even exist. How can you not love it? It ingeniously integrates three classic genres into one cohesive, albeit long film. Those of course are science fiction, superhero and what movie aficionados would brand as noir mystery. Luckily for me, and for all you fans out there, Warner Bros. brought this big, bold adventure to the brand-new HD format, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. I can’t be anymore excited about it! I’m ready to begin here! Continue reading ‘Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

From Gail Simone (Batgirl, Birds of Prey) and Walter Geovani (Vampirella, Witchblade), based on the comic series originally published by Dynamite, Red Sonja: Queen Of Plagues gives the iconic fantasy heroine a fresh new attitude! And now, you can see it all brought to life, starring Misty Lee (Ultimate Spider-Man)! An epic tale of blood, lust, and vengeance, Queen of Plagues takes Red Sonja from the depths of her own grave to the heights of battlefield glory. Kurt Busiek of Astro City and Avengers fame says “Gail Simone’s Red Sonja is an absolute winner — powerful, thrilling stuff that builds up so much momentum you won’t ever want it to end. Richly textured action-adventure with an unforgettable heroine.”

When I first found out they were attempting to go down the road of reinventing, re-branding and rebooting the legendary Superman franchise I just flat out laughed. Then I found out Watchmen’s Zack Snyder was directing the project. I have absolutely nothing against the looks and visual style of his films. I know Snyder has a lot of potential. After all he did do 300 and created one of the most stunning movie intros ever, in my opinion, in Sucker Punch. So the cat has talent, that much I can’t deny. However, then it became known that Christopher Nolan was going to be serving as a producer. I thought maybe, just maybe, under the tutelage of King Nolan, Snyder could possibly nail it on the head and get Superman right this time out. After all, there’s no doubt that this franchise needs a hero. If anybody can do it, it’s definitely Nolan. I have explicit faith in Nolan, and therefore I entrusted my faith in Snyder too. So prepare to soar and be dazzled (because we’re talking about Superman after all). This is 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray review is made out of steel so treat it accordingly. You know how movies come and go from the theater? There always seems to be that one a year where you say to yourself that one got away from me. You wish you could have made it to the theater to see it. However, before you knew it you either forgot about it or the movie dissipated from the cinema. Well, Criminal is one of those films for me in 2016. I was full of euphoria after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (shameless plug of my 4K review here). Wonder Woman is in this! So why not? Could Criminal really be as awful as the critics say with Kevin Costner in the starring role? It also has Ryan Reynolds, Gary Oldman and honeys Alice Eve and Antje Traue. How bad can it really be? Let’s put this UHD disc in and press play. Continue reading ‘Criminal (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

Before I begin with my review here I just want to take a moment to reflect upon the fact that when you think about it, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – Ultimate Edition is the biggest 4K UHD Blu-ray title to hit the infant format since its debut earlier this year. Did that monumental thought sink in already? It’s a pretty heavy burden to ask anybody to thoroughly review this hotly anticipated title on the premium format of “my choice” now. Challenge accepted because let’s face it, honors like this don’t come to one just every day. Oh no! This is a special day here on Why So Blu. This is the day I get to recap and review my favorite film of the year so far (sad huh?) in the best presentation possible that money can buy. Believe me when I say this to you. These 4K UHD Blu-ray titles are money. Alright, my moment of reflection has ended. We can begin. Commencing countdown. Feeding the disc to the Samsung now. Produced by celebrated B-movie icon Roger Corman and directed by the legendary Francis Ford Coppola, the macabre thriller Dementia 13 has been digitally restored from 35mm archival film elements, bringing its terrifying suspense to the screen like never before. The 1963, B-movie classic will be available on Blu-ray July 26 from The Film Detective (distributed by Allied Vaughn). Written and directed by Coppola (The Godfather trilogy, Apocalypse Now, The Conversation) at just 24-years-old, Dementia 13 is considered his first mainstream, “legitimate” directorial effort. Backed by funds leftover from one of Corman’s (Death Race, The Terror, The Little Shop of Horrors) other projects – on which Coppola worked as a sound technician – the fledgling director wrote the screenplay in one night, bringing Corman’s idea for a low-budget, extremely brutal, gothic-themed Psycho knockoff to life.
