It’s the one-time trilogy starter as Brandon Peters declares. To say the Terminator franchise has been a troubled one these past two entries would be like saying there’s a distinctive taste difference between vanilla and chocolate ice cream. It’s simply that apparent. Just when you thought Terminator Salvation was going to reinvigorate the franchise, production of a fifth film went right down the toilet slapped with bankruptcy forcing the property to once again go up for sale. The question was who’s going to buy it? You? Me? Why not Annapurna Pictures with distribution help from Paramount? And then there’s that spelling of “Genisys” in this film’s title to deal with. Oh well! You can’t win them all. I suppose in the end we should all be thanking the Gods for even letting a fifth film in this troubled Terminator franchise to exist, right? Absolutely! There was something a bit subliminal that originally drew me into eventually reviewing Dirty Grandpa on Blu-ray last May (see here for that review). Maybe it was partly my love of Bad Grandpa (see my review here) or my loss of my own grandfathers in real life, but it could have also been that ingenious swag Lionsgate sent over too (see in the review). You pick. However, I do miss my own grandfathers. The one was very wise and I wish I would have listened to him a lot more. He had a lot of valuable life lessons that went in one ear and completely out the other. And after taking in Dirty Grandfather for the very first time, I could totally see my other grandfather nailing De Niro’s role. That’s the kind of “dirty,” lovable guy he was. R.I.P. guys. Despite never being the biggest fan of the Jurassic Park movie franchise, there’s no denying the legacy of these suckers, especially that of the first one (hence the 25th anniversary moniker of it all). There’s also no denying the fact that many Hi-Def/4K UHD enthusiasts have been salivating over the eventual release of these monstrous titles on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format. I can respect all of that. Heck! Even I found myself a little giddy the lower and lower they minimized the retail price on this 4K 8-disc set. With its current price tag here of $50, which equates to roughly $12.50 per 4K feature, it makes it quite difficult to refute the appeal and obligatory addition of this box set to your home media collection. You’re never too old for peer pressure, right? Absolutely! So join me down below in celebration of the groundbreaking Jurassic Park franchise in this all-new limited edition 4K set released on May 22nd. Scream Factory is doing one of their first ever upgrades (Or as some as you may refer to it, “double dip”) with the Collector’s Edition of Ninja III: The Domination. The 1984 Cannon Films cult classic enjoyed a standard release with a commentary back in 2013 that has proven to be one of their most popular titles. With five years time, its good as any to revisit it and beef it up to Collector’s Edition status. This new release features some new key artwork to differentiate it of course, but also a brand new 4K transfer of the film to go along with brand new interviews, including star Lucinda Dickey. They’ve put the work in to make this worth the purchase again. And you’ll want to make sure you pre-order it to have it when it releases on June 12th. The 1970s brought us an interesting little horror genre, the Eco-horror film. This decade was littered with many person against nature films. Of course, the biggest one of them all was Jaws, but we were also subjected to things like the appropriately titled “Frogs” where, well you can guess the source of villainous evil in that one. Here, we may have the poster child for going to the craziest lengths with the concept; Night of the Lepus. Scream Factory has taken this cult classic gem and given it a restoration and are adding it to their library that has already brought forth some of these Eco-horror films including the aforementioned Frogs a few years ago. You’ll want to “hop” on over to Amazon with our link at the bottom and pre-order yourself a copy to have when it releases June 19th. Continue reading ‘Night Of The Lepus (Blu-ray Review)’

Ten years following the original film, that had a highly profitable box office run and a nice legacy on home video, audiences were treated to another deadly visit from The Strangers with Prey At Night. While it had a quieter run, it still found itself profitable and likely will find some sort of cult reception on home video. Will this be the last we see of this incredibly mysterious and merciless trio? It did take ten years to get a second one and this one didn’t seem to be as well received. Hey, maybe we’ll get a straight to video one for the third outing, who knows. For the Blu-ray release, they’ll be giving you an unrated version of the film as well as some bonus features. You can pre-order the film using the Amazon link below to have it on the day of release, June 12th. Continue reading ‘The Strangers: Prey At Night – Unrated (Blu-ray Review)’

Seems like forever ago, but director David Ayer actually stocked himself up some well reviewed movies before the back-to-back nosedive of Suicide Squad and Bright. While critical praise isn’t there, Suicide Squad did made oodles of money and Bright was a pretty sizeable success for Netflix. Fury was the film prior to those, that had some buzz and anticipation going for it leading in. The film did okay in America but wound up pulling in over 200 million dollars on the worldwide market. Sony has decided its high time to bring this one to the 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray format already. Pairing it along with the Mel Gibson led film, The Patriot, it will be coming out May 22nd. If you’re a fan, feel free to order yourself a copy from the link at the end of the review. Continue reading ‘Fury (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

Not too long after the historic release of Braveheart (see my 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray review of it all here) an oddly similar role and tale came into existence for Mr. Mel Gibson. I suppose it’s relatively easy to confuse the two tales as we’ll cover in more detail down below they very much share the same DNA in both story and character. However, Braveheart took place in Scotland within the 1200s and the story we are all gathered here today for, The Patriot, transpires during the 1770s in which the American Revolutionary War went down. Like Braveheart though The Patriot thrives on a very inspirational leader in a character once again portrayed by Mel Gibson and is ripe for the picking with grand scale epic action and emotional zingers. It very much moves me in all the same ways in which Braveheart does and for that I can award the film nothing less than a P-E-R-F-E-C-T score. Keep in mind though like Braveheart is The Patriot is also a long one too, albeit well worth the wait in my opinion.

Alex Garland really made a sweeping debut Ex Machina. A smaller scale science fiction film that was welcoming both to the hardcore and general moviegoer. That film even snuck up on us and won an Academy Award. For his follow up, Annihilation, Garland dug even deeper in the the hard science fiction elements. The film was noted for getting a wide release domestically, but Paramount let this become a Netflix movie for all the other countries in the world. Controversial, yes, but this may have been a good move as this isn’t the most accessible or general friendly audience film many of the people upset about the Netflix deal might think. Lucky enough, it IS coming to 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray after just initially announcing standard Blu-ray only. The trick was that the 4K was coming as a Best Buy exclusive. This exclusive also is set for a May 29th release. Continue reading ‘Annihilation (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

Gnomeo & Juliet have been holding on, waiting and waiting and pining for the sequel to their beloved animated film for seven long years. In 2018, they all could breathe a huge, collective sigh of relief as Sherlock Gnomes finally came together and was released to theaters. Adding a brand new character to the mix, the superfans had plenty of mystery going in on “Who exactly is this Sherlock Gnomes, anyway?” Twitter seemed okay with actor Johnny Depp playing the titular role, unlike some other franchises he’s been apart of, as not a peep or tweet was angrily made at the film’s screenwriter or director. No theories of Sherlock Gnomes having shapeshifting abilities were tiredly shared. Anyway fans, your day to own it is here. You’ll be able to grab a copy of the film when it comes to Blu-ray June 12th. Continue reading ‘Sherlock Gnomes (Blu-ray Review)’

Spy fantasy films seem to be on the comeback trail the last few year, with a year like 2015 deliver upwards of five of them alone. This year will see the sixth Mission: Impossible film in the Tom Cruise-led franchise. Red Sparrow finds us reteaming Jennifer Lawrence with the director of three out of four Hunger Games films, Francis Lawrence. The film focuses on the modern day Russian side of the espionage game. If anything its an old school star led vehicle for Jennifer Lawrence and finds her with a pretty talented supporting cast. While the film underwhelmed at the box office, the take still kind of impresses being the movie was sold as based on nothing but Jennifer Lawrence name and face on the poster and trailers. You can snag yourself a copy of the film now by order from the Amazon link below. Continue reading ‘Red Sparrow (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

Disney had high hopes for the big budget adaptation of the classic book A Wrinkle In Time. Making waves by hiring on acclaimed director Ava DuVernay to helm as well as exciting diverse casting announcements. Unfortunately, this didn’t really take off as they’d have liked and opened to poor reviews as it bombed at the box office back this spring. But, when you’re making Black Panther and Infinity War money, the studio can afford to try something like this out and keep trying something like this out. The film is coming to 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray for those who missed it to check out, and maybe it’ll develop a following after its theatrical release. It comes with a nice package of supplemental features and will be hitting shelves on June 5th. Continue reading ‘A Wrinkle In Time (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

Let’s face it. Escape Plan is the tag team hardcore action moviegoers of my generation have been dying to see happen on the big screen ever since the big guns of the 80’s. With the exception of Arnold’s brief scenes in The Expendables series, Escape Plan truly marks the first time Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger have starred together in the same film. I don’t know how you feel about it, but that’s one massive production in my opinion with both of those hulking names thrown together in the same ring. With the upcoming sequel, Escape Plan 2: Hades, hitting theaters everywhere June 14th Lionsgate decided to step the game up here with the first film on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray June 5th. So until we can discuss the sequel in more detail we are gathered here today to everything about 2013’s Escape Plan.

Amid the triumphant box office phenomenon that was Black Panther, we witnessed many would-be blockbusters falter of produce average/underwhelming results. However, there were some solid counter-programming hits during that run. One of those was the R-rated adult comedy-mystery Game Night. Taking the silver to Black Panther its opening weekend, the film made a solid run with good holds to work its way to over $116 million for the $37 million budgeted comedy. While a decent hit, its getting passed over for the 4K Ultra-HD format for a standard Blu-ray. This movie does lend itself to many of pros that would have come with the format, but this is otherwise fine. I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets one down the road sometime when producing the discs is a little cheaper. For now you can grab this stnadard Blu-ray. by clicking the Amazon link following the review. Continue reading ‘Game Night (Blu-ray Review)’

The Matrix is almost synonymous with the term science fiction in the late 90’s. If you look the term up in the dictionary, you’ll find a reference to the film The Matrix. I’m just kidding, but universal law should work that way. When The Matrix came out it was pretty much instantly adopted and heralded as a sci-fi classic. It was even pioneering in the way special effects were done in movie making. Do you remember how pretty much every film that came out within a few years of The Matrix’s release adopted the slow motion action sequences seen within? I do and they still use this gimmick. Look at last year’s Justice League. Some of the film’s action sequences took pages out of The Matrix’s playbook. Not that it was ever dead, but it certainly lit a fire under the career of Keanu Reeves not to mention pave the careers of The Wachowski Brothers. So let’s talk all about this down below. What say you? The red pill or blue?

It can’t be simple to follow-up a directorial debut as successful as the Oscar-winning Ex Machina. For Alex Garland, however, things seem to be falling into place. Annihilation is his sophomore effort as a director, but Garland’s previous screenplays for films such as 28 Days Later, Sunshine and Dredd have established him as one willing to explore science fiction in a variety of ways. Given all his experience, it’s only right to see him take on a project such as this, which provides a balance between hard sci-fi concepts and the horror found in a beautiful, yet dangerous wonderland. Unfortunately, Paramount didn’t quite know what to do with the well-reviewed film, so following a controversial theatrical release, this solid Blu-ray release now exists to give audiences enough special features and a fantastic technical presentation to supplement a terrific film.
