House of Lies is a Showtime series based on the book by Martin Kihn, which presents a dark comedy focused on a management consultant and his team. Despite not receiving universal acclaim, the series was popular enough during its first season run, with the second season of the series debuting this January. I missed this show during its initial run, but have now had the chance to catch up on its first season. What I took away from watching this series is that Showtime essentially wanted to create their own version of HBO’s Entourage, by way of Glengarry Glen Ross. The solid cast and satirical style certainly helps in all of this, but the show is not without its flaws as well. Continue on to find out more regarding my thoughts on the series, as well as the quality of this DVD package of the complete first season.

We’re taking a step back today and bringing some low budget DTV on DVD into the light with our next review for something called Rogue River. Rogue River comes to us from Lionsgate’s vast DTV vault. The film stars Bill Moseley and Michelle Page. The film is also produced by that grown up tyke Zachary Bryan (the oldest son from television’s Home Imporvement), so something like this definitely lends itself to a certain sense of gravitas, if you will. In the grand scheme of things will Rogue River make it up the creek or will it sink in shallow water? Keep it here, folks. Continue reading ‘Rogue River (DVD Review)’

I came across Todd and the Book of Pure Evil by accident and just rolled with the fact that it had a neat sounding name that promised hijinx. At least the cover art did, but that’s all I knew of the show. Okay, and I also knew that the show was a Canadian production, so how funny could Todd and the Book of Pure Evil really be? I’ll just say that I received the DVD yesterday and I quickly sat down to devour the entire first season marathon style today. It’s a 13 episode first season, so it damn well better be the bomb, right? Read on and find out if it cut the mustard or not. Catherine Deneuve’s porcelain perfection hides a cracked interior in one of the actress’s most iconic roles: Séverine, a Paris housewife who begins secretly spending her afternoon hours working in a bordello. This surreal and erotic late-sixties daydream from provocateur for the ages Luis Buñuel is an examination of desire and fetishistic pleasure (its characters’ and its viewers’), as well as a gently absurdist take on contemporary social mores and class divisions. Fantasy and reality commingle in this burst of cinematic transgression, which was one of Buñuel’s biggest hits. Continue reading ‘Belle de jour: Criterion Collection (DVD Review)’

From Israel’s most important filmmaker , Carmel is Amos Kitai’s deeply personal and resonant meditation on Jewish and Israeli identity. Using both fiction and documentary techniques, Gitai links his family history to ancient history. Through a series of long takes, he re-enacts the Jewish-Roman wars that began in 66 A.D., and contrasts to the young soldiers enlisting in Israel’s army today, including his own son. The cycles of violence are never-ending, but so are the bonds of family. Carmel is narrated by Jean Moreau. Continue reading ‘Carmel (DVD Review)’
