Comic-Con 2011: A Talk with Clone Wars Actress/Entrepreneur Ashley Eckstein

I had the good fortune of interviewing Ashley Eckstein during this year’s Comic-Con about her character Ahsoka Tano, who happens to be Anakin Skywalker’s apprentice on Star Wars: The Clone Wars.  During our chat we discussed the show’s future, her character’s not-so-rosy future fate, the franchise’s generational shift, and the business she created called Her Universe which sells cool sci-fi clothes to women.  She’s also married to Major League Baseball player and two-time World Series Champion, David Eckstein, and they generously support a variety of organizations and causes including, Mid-America Transplant Services, Donate Life and The Ronald McDonald House.  Our talk took place at at her booth on the convention floor which was incredibly noisy but I did the best I could to transcribe our loose informal conversation that flowed around customers, the Hulk himself, and the multitude of people.  Ashley was very sweet, friendly, and a pleasure to talk to and who was nice enough to take time away from her booming business to chat with me.

World War I in Color (DVD Review)

World War I claimed the lives of 10 million soldiers and shaped an entire century. Narrated by four-time Academy Award nominee Kenneth Branagh, this extraordinary documentary brings the war’s horror and heroism to life in a way never before revealed. Rare archival film—meticulously colorized under the guidance of expert historians—makes the past fresh, relevant, and alive.  In addition to these newly reclaimed sights and sounds, surviving WWI veterans share their experiences, personally testifying about life in the trenches, the terror of “going over the top,” and the courage and sacrifice of battle.  Analysis by military historians, detailed maps, and excerpts from the diaries and letters of men and women in the struggle offer a full range of perspectives on this unimaginably brutal, bloody clash of empires. Damnation Alley (Blu-ray Review)

In Damnation Alley the world is devastated by a nuclear holocaust, causing the Earth to tilt on its axis and bringing vast meteorological chaos.  As the weather stabilizes, mutated insects start to emerge, preying on the survivors.  The surviving crew at a U.S. Air Force bomb shelter in the Mojave Desert picks up radio signals coming from Albany.  The commander, Major Eugene Denton (George Peppard, The A-Team), unveils two armored vehicles he has constructed and announces a plan to cross “Damnation Alley,” the hundred-mile-wide strip between areas of radiation hazard, to join the survivors.  They set off, taking on two civilians — a novice singer they find in the ruins of Las Vegas and a wild teenager (Jackie Earle Haley, Watchmen) — along the way.  The journey is also beset by giant mutated cockroaches, storms and crazed survivalists, making for some hair-raising escapes in this post-apocalyptic thriller.  Originally released in theaters in 1977 from 20th Century Fox, Damnation Alley has been out-of-print on VHS for several years, so I’m sure many are anticipating its debut on DVD and Blu-ray. Battle Beyond the Stars (Blu-ray Review)

A long time ago, in a former lumber yard far far away (actually 1980 in Venice, Calif.), Roger Corman gathered together a fledgling team of filmmakers to make one of the best low-budget science fiction films of all time, Battle Beyond the Stars, a space opera that managed to playfully borrow from Star Wars and The Magnificent Seven, to come up with an enduring cult classic. Long out of print, Battle Beyond the Stars has been meticulously restored with a new anamorphic widescreen transfer (1.85:1) from the internegative, boasting a new 5.1 DTS Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray, and featuring a galaxy of extras, including commentary by writer John Sayles and Roger Corman; a new interview with actor Richard Thomas; a behind-the-scenes technical featurette and much more.  Continue reading ‘Battle Beyond the Stars (Blu-ray Review)’

Transformers – Headmasters (DVD Review)

Transformers – Headmasters represents the missing link in the Transformer mythology for American audiences since the show only aired in Japan.  The toy-line was made by the company Takara, were originally known as the Diaclone and Microman’s Micro Change toy-lines, which were re-branded as “Transformers” by Hasbro when the toys were brought to the U.S. market.   Takara imported the original series to sell their toys until they felt they could do it on their own and created their own series known as Transformers – Headmasters which took place after the events of Generation 1 (More Than Meets the Eye) that aired in America.  While most of the continuity from the original show was retained, there were some differences between the two such as how the Headmasters were created. Amazon’s Deal of the Week – The Sound of Music Limited Edition Box Set for $38.99 (57% off)!

At last the hills are alive with the Sound of Music on Blu-ray! This is is one of my all time favorite musicals (a genre that doesn’t have that many movies that interest me) and one of the movies that never fails to cheer me up.  After all, it was brilliantly directed by Robert Wise and has a stellar cast, great songs and choreography, and breathtaking panoramic visuals that just beg for the Blu-ray treatment.  This movie was nominated for 10 Academy Awards and won Best Picture, Best Director (Robert Wise), Best Musical Score, Best Editing, and Best Sound.  Julie Andrews was absolutely fantastic in this and this became one of her signature roles (the other being Mary Poppins).  If you’d like to read my review of the stand-alone Blu-ray release for this movie, you can do that here, but this is the ultimate box set that has even more goodies than the one I reviewed! This deal lasts this week only so make sure you get your copy while you can! Continue reading ‘Amazon’s Deal of the Week – The Sound of Music Limited Edition Box Set for $38.99 (57% off)!’
