I think a lot of people (especially guys) dream of being a superhero and got our fix through comics, movies, or videogames. I grew up on a steady diet of DC and Marvel comics and sat through countless iterations of Batman (the 60s show, guest starring on Scooby Doo, etc.) and the SuperFriends. I know I am dating myself but I bet there’s a lot of you that did the same thing.

As a general rule, I hate all reality TV shows. All of the manufactured drama, the display of the worst human behavior, and the formulaic presentation always makes me cringe and I do my best to avoid it. When I was offered this show to review, I almost reflexively said no until I actually looked into it.

Tony Scott’s UNSTOPPABLE arrives this Frbruary 15th and I’m excited to see it since I missed it in the theaters. If you’d like, you can read Aaron Neuwirth’s review for the movie here. Tony Scott usually delivers the goods, but I wish he would try something other than his usual hyper-kinetic style of shooting although I heard that it serves this movie well. No matter what, you can’t go wrong with this cast since it stars Denzel Washington, Chris Pine, and Rosario Dawson among others. Continue reading ‘UNSTOPPABLE Races to Blu-ray February 15th!’

I recently reviewed an episode that was was excerpted from this season five set, The Universe – 7 Wonders of the Solar System in 3D which you can read here, and this is the review for the complete season set. The Universe does a great job covering many aspects of science and future possibilities and making it accessible for average viewers. This two disc set contains all eight episodes that total 376 minutes of viewing time.

If you are a fan of The History Channel’s series “The Universe,” you may have seen this segment during Season 5’s run. The difference between the episode on this disc and the one on the Season 5 set is that this one is in both 2D and 3D whereas the season set only offers the 2D version. For those of you that aren’t aware of the show, it’s a documentary series that premiered in 2007 on The History Channel that explains astronomical concepts and objects through the use of computer generated graphics and a group of experts whose expertise includes astronomy, cosmology, and astrophysics. While this movie wasn’t a box office smash, it was well received on the indie circuit and its tale of a man and his imaginary superhero friend is now available on Blu-ray. The movie came about during a bleak time for the husband and wife team of Kieran and Michele Mulroney who almost had their Justice League movie filmed until it was canceled at the last minute which left them despondent over show business. They wrote and directed this movie during that period when they weren’t sure if they even wanted to continue in their profession.

In the interest of full disclosure, the Beatles are my favorite band and I’ve enjoyed all of their post-Beatles efforts as well. Now that that’s out of the way, LENNONYC is a glimpse into the life of John Lennon after the Beatles disbanded and he moved to New York City with Yoko Ono. At long last, the Star Wars Saga is coming to Blu-ray this September and is available for pre-order right now! The Star Wars Saga and the Indiana Jones Trilogy are the movies I’ve been the most anxious to arrive in high definition and it’s awesome that we finally have a release date of September 16, 2011! If you enjoyed the first two Family Guy Star Wars spoofs (Blue Harvest and Something Something Dark Side) like me, then you will probably enjoy the final installment in the saga, It’s a Trap! I’ve always been impressed with how much effort the Family Guy team puts into matching the source movies down to the smallest details such as the music cues and the editing with its dead on accuracy that thrills the inner Star Wars geek in me. Making a Top Ten list of Blu-rays was a lot harder than I thought it would be. The fact that there’s so many excellent releases that I haven’t seen yet just made it even harder because I know a lot of them would be on my list. So I decided to make a list of the Top 10 Blu-rays that I’ve seen and most likely reviewed, and another list of Blu-rays that I really want to see and would most likely would have been included in this list if I had seen them. This has been a great year for animated movies and Despicable Me continues that tradition with it’s unusual character of Gru who is voiced brilliantly by Steve Carrell and who seems to be a blend of Dr. Evil, Looney Tunes, and the Addams Family. Aided by a multitude of not so bright yellow minions, Gru wants to be the biggest villain in the world. His only obstacle is a young upstart named Vector (Jason Segal) who has the same goal. The World at War is without question, the definitive historical documentary account of World War II. The scope and breadth of this documentary series is unparalleled as it covers events from 1933 through the war’s end in 1945. Commissioned by Thames Television in 1969, it took four years to assemble all of the footage (including some rare footage in color) and it ended up costing what would now cost around $12 million dollars to produce. Knight and Day represents a return to form for Tom Cruise who had a choice of movies to pick from (The Tourist was one of them) before he decided to sign on to this movie. I believe it was a good decision since Knight and Day lets Tom Cruise be Tom Cruise. There’s a lot of action and humor in the movie and it really provides a showcase to remind people why Tom Cruise became a movie star in the first place. David Milch has been involved in or co-created some of the most memorable shows in television history. With a career going back to Hill Street Blues, or more recently the fantastic NYPD Blue, Milch has always done exceptional work. Deadwood is his tour de force and the culmination of a brilliant career. The series was nominated for twenty-two Emmys, won seven, and also won a Golden Globe for Ian McShane’s performance. Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland is a sequel of sorts to the original animated Walt Disney classic. It’s been thirteen years since Alice left Wonderland, and things have changed quite a bit in her life and also in Wonderland. This updated take on the classic story by Lewis Carroll, tweaked the original story in a lot of ways to make the unreal land become more real for viewers by giving the characters some history and valid reasons for their behavior. Space: 1999 is hard to categorize. It’s a mix of Forbidden Planet, Star Trek, and 2001 – A Space Odyssey and yet it’s it’s own thing as well. All of the sets for the show were supposed to be originally for the second season of creator Gerry Anderson’s show UFO, but when that was canceled he had to come up with a new plan. He retooled the show to focus on the moon-base concept that was already planned for and from that Space: 1999 was created. Continue reading ‘Space: 1999 Season One (Blu-ray Review)’

Walt Disney intended Bambi to follow Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs but his quest for perfection and other issues, delayed Bambi for years before it became the fifth animated classic released in 1942. The timeless tale of man vs. nature, this is one of Walt Disney’s most beloved movies. Continue reading ‘Disney’s Bambi is Coming to Blu-ray March 1st!’

Lennon loved New York City and proclaimed it to be his new home but his vocal and effective anti-war stance quickly brought the full force of the U.S. Government down upon him. This is a look into the life and times of John Lennon who while trying to discover what kind of life he wanted also had to fight from being deported from America for being who he was.
