WonderCon 2015: Wayward Pines

6180109_GWonderCon is here and while the high profile slate seems a lot lighter than normal (too many cons these days I suppose), there are still some worthwhile panels this year. One of them was for the upcoming Fox miniseries Wayward Pines. If you have been wondering where Wayward Pines is, don’t worry, so have I. The show screened its pilot episode at Comic-con last year, but has been MIA ever since. Now we know this M. Night Shyamalan mystery series will be premiering in May, which is good, because based on the pilot episode, there is a lot of promise here.

Boardwalk Empire: The Complete Fifth Season (Blu-ray Review)

boardwalk empire s5 thumbBoardwalk Empire is the series that I always felt both audiences and HBO wanted more from.  Make no mistake, this Prohibition era-set crime drama, starring Steve Buscemi, was certainly a handsome production, with many fine performances, and a narrative that made some big turns throughout its 56-episode run, but I never felt like this would serve as one of the acclaimed HBO shows that would be used to make a statement about the premium network’s legacy.  Regardless, the show has now come to an end and for those that stuck with it, or wanted to, I can say that I was at least very involved in the way the final hours of this series played out, given the finality that comes with the last season of a crime drama such as this.  Now the fifth and final season has come to Blu-ray, so the word can spread on just how quietly this series may or may not have gone out.

Reno 911!: The Complete Series (DVD Review)

reno 911 whysoblu coverI recall being a very young lad and watching MTV trying to figure out what ‘good’ music was, by chance I stayed up late enough to watch a group of young up and coming sketch comedy actors on the show, The State.  I had no real idea of what I was watching but I was riveted.  It was odd and I didn’t get all of the jokes, but I still laughed because I was that guy all the way back then. Eventually the show was cancelled, this was back before the internet and I had no idea why or where these young actors went.  I was upset but eventually time went on and I saw Thomas Lennon, Kerri Kenney, and Michael Ian Black pop up on their own new show Viva Variety on Comedy Central a number of years later. I was stoked!  I was older so I understood more of the jokes and I was just happy to see some talented and deserving comedians on TV again.  And like the The State, Viva Variety was cancelled.  A chubby, nerdy, and Latino Jr High school child cried out, “IS THERE NOTHING JUST IN THIS WORLD?!?!?!”  Luckily, there would be another chance for Lennon and company to bring me more comedic joy.  In 2003, Comedy Central premiered Reno 911! and it was a critically and commercially successful show, and most importantly, I got more than just a season or two of it.  It was created by three The State alums, Thomas Lennon, Kerri Kenney-Silver, and Robert Ben Garant.  While the show had 6 seasons, not all episodes were on the same level of hilarity, but they were all consistently funny.  Follow me and we go through each season together… Ladies and gentlemen, let’s visit Reno!

Banshee: The Complete Second Season (Blu-ray Review)

BansheeFrom executive producer Alan Ball, creator of True Blood, this Cinemax action drama charts the continuing twists and turns that follow Lucas Hood (Antony Starr), an ex-convict who improbably assumes the identity of sheriff of the rural, Amish-area town of Banshee, where his former lover and partner-in-crime (Ivana Milicevic) lives under her own alias, Carrie Hopewell. Season 2 takes up immediately after the S1 finale, when Carrie’s father, gang kingpin Rabbit (Ben Cross) was left for dead after a climactic warehouse shootout. Carrie, now exposed and estranged from her husband and kids, is torn between her devotion to her family and her connection to Lucas, who had given himself up in order to save her years earlier. The new season finds Lucas, having escaped detection after being interrogated by FBI agent Jim Racine (guest star Zeljko Ivanek), with his hands fuller than ever as sheriff, dealing with (among other things) the murder of a Kinaho tribe girl, the continuing escalation of tensions between Amish overlord Kai Proctor (Ulrich Thomsen) and Kinaho tribe leader Alex Longshadow (Anthony Ruivivar), and the unwelcome appearance of a surprise visitor: the reprobate son of the real (dead) Lucas Hood.  Continue reading ‘Banshee: The Complete Second Season (Blu-ray Review)’

Arrested Development: Season 4 (DVD Review)

arrested development s4Arrested Development is one of my all-time favorite television series.  Mitch Hurwitz created the kind of sitcom that was hilarious, witty, well-acted, one-of-a-kind, and ahead of its time.  All of that means it was very well-regarded by critics, won numerous awards, and pockets of audiences knew the amazing show they were getting, only see it cancelled after a shortened third season.  Now, after years of rumors, we were able to find the entire cast back together again for a noble Netflix experiment.  Season 4 of Arrested Development was released last year on the popular streaming service and has now arrived on DVD in a nifty three-disc package.  Now I can really delve into my thoughts on the latest adventures of the Bluth family.

HBO Home Entertainment Announces The Wire: The Complete Series

the-wireOne of the best shows…well, ever, is coming to Blu-ray.  The Wire is both one of the greatest TV shows of all time and also one of the least represented when it comes to all the Emmys and Golden Globes it should have won.  With that in mind, the expansion of HBO’s availability at least means more people will now be able to see the critically acclaimed crime drama series.  First it is going to make its high definition debut on HBO Go, but coming summer of 2015, the series will be released on Blu-ray.  Continue on to learn more about this very exciting news.
