Comic Con 2014: Comedy Central First Look: Moonbeam City

moonbeamI was happy to sit in on the Comedy Central panel at Comic Con and following a hilarious panel for the hit sketch show Key & Peele (I reviewed the Blu-ray for the first two seasons HERE), a special look at a new animated series took place.  Here’s the official word:  Today at San Diego Comic-Con Comedy Central unveiled the first look at “Moonbeam City,” the brand’s newest animated series debuting in 2015. “Moonbeam City” is an absurdist take on the gritty, sex-drenched crime dramas from the 1980s and follows undercover detective Dazzle Novak (voiced by Rob Lowe), a handsome idiot who commits more crimes than most criminals. The show also stars his tyrannical chief, Pizzaz Miller (Elizabeth Banks), who won’t get off his back and hotshot rookie Rad Cunningham (Will Forte) who is dying to see him fail. With the world against him, Dazzle is thrust into a living nightmare: having to do actual police work. “Moonbeam City” is executive produced by Will Gluck’s Olive Bridge Entertainment in association with Titmouse Studios. Comedy Central’s panel at Comic-Con today featured the series’ Executive Producers Scott Gairdner and Tommy Blancha.  Continue on to see a clip and some pictures from the show.

Comic Con 2014: Batman ’66 Panel

batman 66There are a lot of things to see at San Diego Comic Con every year and while I am certainly excited to see a number of the high profile panels taking place this year, I am not overstating it when I say that a Hall H panel focused on the 60s Batman television series definitely had my attention.  After years of waiting, the entire series is finally going to be released onto Blu-ray and DVD this November and apparently Comic Con was the place to reveal the details of the upcoming set.  Not at all hurting was the presence of Adam West, Burt Ward, and Julie Newmar, who were game to share some stories, while audiences were also treated to clips from the newly remastered episodes.

You Betcha This Year’s Most Emmy Nominated Miniseries, Fargo Season 1, Is On Blu-ray This October

fargo tv whysobluFargo is a favorite movie of mine. A TV show based on Fargo could have been a disaster, but FX pulled through to deliver one of the best TV seasons of recent years. I am excited for this release: The first instalment of Fargo features an all-new “true crime” story and follows a new case and new characters, all entrenched in the trademark humor, murder and “Minnesota nice” that made the film an enduring classic. Oscar® winner Billy Bob Thornton stars as “Lorne Malvo,” a rootless, manipulative man who meets and forever changes the life of small town insurance salesman “Lester Nygaard,” played by BAFTA Award® winner and Emmy®-nominated Martin Freeman. Colin Hanks plays Duluth Police Deputy “Gus Grimly,” a single dad who must choose between his own personal safety and his duty as a policeman when he comes face-to-face with a killer. Allison Tolman also stars as “Molly Solverson,” an ambitious Bemidji deputy. Fargo is written by Noah Hawley. Hawley, Warren Littlefield, Joel & Ethan Coen and Geyer Kosinski serve as executive producers.

Don’t Lose Your Head, But ‘SLEEPY HOLLOW’ Hits Blu-ray This September!

sleepy hollow bluFirst of all:  I love Sleepy Hollow, the breakout supernatural TV series that premiered on Fox last fall, and I would be remiss if I did not mention the fact that myself and fellow Why So Blu? writer Brandon Peters co-hosted a podcast devoted to the entire first season, along with our friend Maxwell Haddad (which can be found HERE).  With that said, clearly Fox recognizes how big a hit this series was, as Sleepy Hollow: The Complete First Season is arriving on Blu-ray on September 16th and it is packed with special features.  This is a series that puts a twist on the classic Washington Irving tale about Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman by turning it into an X-Files like procedural show, set in modern times.  If you think that sounds ridiculous, you would be right, but it is also a very fun show, with surprisingly strong writing, given that the pilot episode features a headless horseman wielding an assault rifle.  Read on to learn more about this upcoming Blu-ray release.

Eastbound & Down: The Complete Fourth & Final Season (Blu-ray Review)

eastbound and down s4 whysoblu coverI have been a huge fan of HBO’s comedy series Eastbound & Down and the ridiculous, foul-mouthed anti-hero character that is Kenny Powers since the beginning.  I know some people are not big fans of Danny McBride, but I find him hilarious and this show, which he is heavily involved in the production of, was a perfect way to harness his comedic energy over the years.  The fourth season was an unexpected one, given the finality of its third, but dammit if McBride and co-creators Jody Hill & Ben Best didn’t find a way to make a truly glorious final season for the series.  Eastbound & Down was always the story of a former baseball player and all-around horrible guy coming to terms with evolving for the better as a person, but in the craziest ways possible, making it plenty entertaining.  Now the final season is available on Blu-ray for all to see…or better yet, the whole series is now f***kin’ out!

The Walking Dead Escape Returns To San Diego Comic Con This Year

the walking deadI look forward to seeing The Walking Dead’s presence at Comic Con this year, as they always have pretty elaborate set ups on the showroom floor, let along super popular panels. A few years back I was happy to participate in The Walking Dead Escape. This is The Walking Dead-themed obstacle course that takes over San Diego’s Petco Park during Comic Con.  It is a ton of fun to run away from zombies, let alone admire the zombie makeup creations on regular folk who are apparently happy to go after geeks running through a baseball stadium in full on zombie makeup for hours at a time.  It is returning to Comic Con once again this year, along with several other stops around the country.  Read on to learn more, including details on deals for signing up early!

Don’t Miss the Riveting Third Season of Homeland, Available on Blu-Ray this September

homeland s3 whysobluI may not have enjoyed the acclaimed Showtime series Homeland as much as I have since its fantastic first season, but this is a series I certainly still enjoy quite a bit and am still compelled to see play out further, especially given how the third season ended.  Speaking of which, the third season of Homeland is coming to Blu-ray on September 9, with a few special extras to go with it.  For those that have only caught up on the second season, some things have obviously changed, but the show still has plenty of big surprises up its sleeve, along with a pretty fantastic finale to look forward too. Aging Pilots’ Memories Fly High During The Filming of ‘Old Bold Pilots’

Old Bold Pilots TNThis past Thursday night I finally got the chance to sit down with George Dawe, a 51-year-old actor and stuntman (you can check out his IMDB page here), residing in Fallbrook, CA and talk about his newest project he’s passionately working on.  Now let me back up for one minute before we dive into further discussing this newest endeavor of his.  I have known George for a number of years now and let me tell you the man has quite an impressive resume of accomplishments in life.  Not only is he an actor and a stuntman like I mentioned prior, but he was also once an attorney and a pilot.  I mention the word pilot to cleverly segue into the reason we are all here today to talk about his newest “pilot,” the documentary television series Old Bold Pilots.  And yes, for anyone who’s counting, I said the word pilot three times in a sentence.  I am aware of that, but I digress.  Let’s talk some Old Bold Pilots. The Honeymooners: “Classic 39 Episodes” (Blu-ray Review)

the honeymooners whysoblu thumbSeeing as The Honeymooners was a show from the 50s, I was obviously not around when it first aired, but it is a show I hold in very high regard.  I used to watch and laugh loudly at old reruns of The Honeymooners with my father, when I was very young, and the show has continued to hold up over time.  This is a series that uses dialogue and great physical comedy to create classic comedy scenarios that have yet to feel dated.  While the show is obviously from a certain time, I think it holds up due to its simplicity and the universal nature of the humor, which is why I was very happy to revisit it on this wonderful Blu-ray set.

‘Rizzoli & Isles’ The Complete Fourth Season (DVD Review)

Rizzoli and IslesI’m new to the world of Rizzoli & Isles. I’ve never watched a single episode of the series and was somewhat shocked to see that it’s now up to season four, so it’s obvious that it generates enough ratings to keep it on the air. I also figured that I might as well jump right into the events of season four first and catch up with the previous three seasons at a later date. All I knew going into season four of Rizzoli & Isles was that there were two very attractive females on the cover of the DVD case. Now, a couple of pretty faces don’t make or break a show, but what was I in store for? Read on to find out, folks!  Continue reading ‘‘Rizzoli & Isles’ The Complete Fourth Season (DVD Review)’
