Perhaps one of the most underrated of the collaborations between director John Ford and star John Wayne, Rio Grande manages to be both a conclusion and a new beginning for this most iconic of actor-filmmaker collaborators. The film is the final entry in Ford and Wayne’s “Cavalry Trilogy, ” following their hits Fort Apache (1948) and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949). Yet it also marks the first of five appearances Wayne made with actress Maureen O’Hara, three of which were directed by Ford. Wayne is Lt. Col. Kirby Yorke, attached to the Texas frontier in 1879 to protect settlers from attacks by Apaches. When Yorke’s son a West Point flunkee turned Army private is assigned to his father’s regiment, tensions flare upon the arrival of Yorke’s estranged wife Kathleen (O’Hara), who wants their teenaged son out of Yorke’s unit. After Apaches attack, the stakes of Yorke’s mission escalate, and he must journey to Mexico where the Apaches are hiding out. With his son and two old recruits (Ford/Wayne regulars Ben Johnson and Harry Carey Jr.) as accompaniment, Yorke faces his toughest battle. Continue reading ‘‘Rio Grande’ [Eureka! A few months back (October to be exact), our very own retired/not retired Jason Coleman gave a 5-star review to Gille Klabin’s film, The Wave. Coleman also interviewed Klabin on the site and you can find all of that HERE. We also managed to snag a pull quote for the press release materials for the film’s home video (Blu-ray and DVD) release. And a thank you to Epic Pictures for the schmoozing as they provided a poster, a postcard, a tye-dyed rag of sorts, a cookie and a mysterious powder. Having seen the movie now, I think I’ll stay away from solving the mystery of the powder. Gille Klabin’s mind-bending film stars the likes of Justin Long, Donald Faison, Sheila Vand and Tommy Flanagan. It will be unleashed onto glorious home video to see what Jason Coleman is raving about on February 11th.

DC Comics has made a concerted effort to release some top tier programming on their streaming DC Universe platform. Amidst their growing library of shows include Doom Patrol, Teen Titans, both of which are live action, and the insanely fun Harley Quinn cartoon. Within that list of title is the king of the green, defender of the bayou, Swamp Thing. The live action series debuted in 2019 and was unfortunately cancelled after one season, largely due to budget issues. To put it plainly, the show got too expensive. Swamp Thing comes out on Blu-ray this Tuesday, February 11th, and I had a chance to check out ahead of time. Let’s take a look how the ten-episode, two-disc series looks.

Rom-coms that stray from time-tested formulas risk alienating audiences. Last Christmas, a movie about a would-be London singer who works at a year-round Christmas-themed shop while trying to navigate a very hectic life is one of those films. Despite a strong cast and a director with a solid track record, the film failed to connect with theatergoers last holiday season. I, too, was one of those viewers that couldn’t quite wrap my head around director Paul Feig and writer Emma Thompson’s high concept Christmas love story with a plot twisty last act, filled with wall-to-wall tunes from the late, great George Michael. Yet, here we are months later, and it’s a Christmas miracle, aka the joyous rewatch. I may have wished this was a 4K release, but I couldn’t have hoped for a better reevaluation. I liked Emilia Clarke even more this time around. Henry Golding had me wanting to dance and jump around the U.K. There was a bit more to this tale than I had originally understood. And man, does this package have amazing stocking stuffers via extras! Last Christmas is here, just in time for… Valentine’s Day.

Harley Quinzel breaks free of her former fatally-flawed squadmates, acquiring an all-new team that’s better in every way imaginable. This will not be one of my standard intros, where I hold back on my assessment until the second paragraph. I loved Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) as much as despised 2016’s Suicide Squad. While technically not a direct sequel – Suicide Squad 2 aka The Suicide Squad arrives next year – Birds has the same “this is way better” vibe the sequels to Ouija and Annabelle delivered (all the same studio too, so great job Warner Bros.!). Nearly every problem present in David Ayer’s much-maligned supervillain team-up is addressed: the fight scenes, the plot, the characters, ya know, the DNA of comic book flick. If you’re a fan Margot Robbie (who isn’t?), the DCEU, or you just want to have a heap of fun, this intentionally messy banger is a real hoot.

Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn is a movie title I like saying over and over. It rolls off the tip of my tongue like belly skin does over a wet Wham-O Slip ‘N Slide. It’s also my number one most anticipated film of 2020. I’ve been looking forward to this one for over 3 years since I penned this insightful 4K Review of 2016’s Suicide Squad HERE. One might even say I was born to write this review like some fateful, divine intervention shushing any naysayers from spewing any negative comments. So if I never see another movie in 2020, I’d be perfectly content as I have my brand spanking new Harley Quinn movie and all the endless merchandise I can get my grubby hands on. And let me tell you I got a lot! However, it’s time to lay all my biases on the table and intelligently deconstruct a fair, honest review of what you can expect from Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn. Oh wow! It truly never gets old saying that one, but I feel I just have to digress. Am I reading this wrong or has the title been switched up a little bit? It has, right? It used to be Hansel & Gretel… but its Gretel & Hansel now? This is Gretel & Hansel? Well Gretel & Hansel it is then. Anyway I went to see Gretel & Hansel (2020) earlier this week. It shouldn’t seem like such a foreign tale, regardless of the names of our main characters being switched around in the title. However, you would be surprised at how different this new take on the tale can be. Well let’s pack a few treats and trudge through the dark and mysterious forest. Shall we?

As we all know, Doctor Sleep is the continued story of Danny Torrance, the tortured son of Jack in The Shining. We are following him on his own journey into the madness. What overtook his father once has lived in him for the last 40 years. There was a time when Danny couldn’t fight those frightening images. He was afraid to face those who tried to steal his shine. We learned a little bit about The Shining from Dick Halloran in the first film, but here, we get further in-depth on the subject. Just like this review! Look for far more on The Shining via Doctor Sleep, in stores this Tuesday.

Edward Norton’s second crack at directing makes its way home on Blu-ray sans any Oscar nominations but is nonetheless a solid adaptation of Jonathan Lethem’s award-winning novel. There are have been plenty of gumshoe detective tales in cinema. Some like Chinatown are masterworks, while too many are forgettable – like that one that with ‘Mulholland‘ in the title but not David Lynch under ‘directed by.’ A 4K release of a good-looking period tale would have been preferable. Still, this 2K transfer is no slouch for anyone who loved the film or even folks like me who were anxious to play catch up. The strong cast includes Alec Baldwin, Willem Defoe, Bruce Willis, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Norton himself as the lead. There’s corruption afoot, so let’s venture into a Motherless Brooklyn to see what a junior private investigator uncovers.

Adapted directly from the play by Eugene O Neill (considered the Nobel laureate s magnum opus), Long Day’s Journey into Night is a four-act study of addiction and recrimination that the playwright claimed was written “in tears and blood”. Taking place over a single, fateful day in the summer of 1912, the Tyrone family (modelled after O’Neill’s own) confront their bitter failings and long-held resentments. Patriarch James (Ralph Richardson) is a renowned stage actor who s never forgotten his squalid Irish childhood, and has forsaken artistic ambition for commercial success. His wife Mary (Katharine Hepburn) has developed a morphine addiction, his eldest son Jamie (Jason Robards, Jr. ) is a violent alcoholic and failed actor, and his youngest (and clearly favoured) son Edmund (Dean Stockwell) is a nervous young man in poor health. All of them have something painful to say, and their silence is even worse. Continue reading ‘‘Long Day’s Journey into Night’ [Eureka! Masters of Cinema] on Blu-ray & DVD March 16, 2020!’

1981’s My Bloody Valentine first made its way onto Blu-ray to coincide with the Todd Farmer/Patrick Lussier remake of the same name. A Paramount film, Lionsgate put out that release, which included a never before seen uncut version of the film featuring footage thought to be lost forever. That version had since gone out of print and was going for astronomical prices on the secondary market. For those of you who missed out on it the first time, hopefully you held out and didn’t pay out the wahzoo for it, as Scream Factory will be bringing it back to Blu-ray via a brand new 2-disc Collector’s Edition. This updated release will feature 4K scans of both the theatrical and uncut versions, previously a deleted scenes/branching option, as well as a plethora of brand new interviews and director commentary. As one would expect, Scream Factory is wasting no opportunity with their new Paramount deal, and giving this film the rock star release it has always deserved. Fans can finally own or upgrade their old copy when My Bloody Valentine – Collector’s Edition arrives on February 11th. Just in time to crack open a Moosehead and enjoy with your bloody valentine.

While it feels a lot longer to me than just a mere 10 years Shutter Island has always held a warm spot in my heart. Both the book and movie adaptation brought to us by Martin Scorsese managed to thrill and excite me. Truth be told I just revisited the film on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray this past summer by acquiring an Australian import of it. I don’t know why, but I didn’t think Paramount would ever deliver a U.S. release. Obviously I was so wrong. If I would have just had a little patience, I could have saved myself some bones last year. However, I digress. Shutter Island is officially on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the U.S. and I couldn’t be happier! Let’s discuss the film and pertinent specifics down below.
