Witness for the Prosecution [Masters of Cinema] on Blu-ray & DVD September 10, 2018!

Based on the hit play by Agatha Christie, Billy Wilder’s Witness for the Prosecution was nominated for six Academy Awards and was reportedly praised by Christie herself as the best adaptation of her work she had seen. When a wealthy widow is found murdered, her married suitor, Leonard Vole (Tyrone Power), is accused of the crime. Vole’s only hope for acquittal is the testimony of his wife (Marlene Dietrich)… but his airtight alibi shatters when she reveals some shocking secrets of her own. King of Hearts [Eureka! Masters of Cinema] (Blu-ray Review)

A cult comic masterpiece from acclaimed director Philippe de Broca, King of Hearts was a flop upon initial release in France, but was a smash hit in the US, where it ended up running for five years straight. During the latter part of World War I, Private Charles Plumpick ( Alan Bates; Women in Love) is chosen to go into the French town of Marville and disconnect a bomb that the German army has planted. However, Charles is chased by some Germans and finds himself holed up at the local insane asylum, where the inmates are convinced that he is the “King of Hearts.” Feeling obligated to help the inmates, Charles attempts to lead them out of town, but they are afraid to leave and frolic about the streets in gay costumes. Will Charles be able to deactivate the bomb in time and save his newfound friends? Featuring a score by legendary film composer Georges Delerue and also starring Geneviève Bujold ( Anne of the Thousand Days, Dead Ringers), King of Hearts is presented here from a gorgeous new 4K restoration in its UK debut as part of The Masters of Cinema Series, in a special Dual Format edition. Salvador [Masters of Cinema] on Blu-ray & DVD September 17, 2018!

A harrowing drama set during the Salvadoran Civil War, Salvador is a one of director Oliver Stone’s most underrated films, a thrilling and violent look at the chaos of war as seen through the lens of an amoral photojournalist. In 1980, young men, women and children are being brutally killed in a bloody civil war in El Salvador. A horrific setting, but a perfect one for Richard Boyle (James Woods in an Oscar®nominated role), a sleazy journalist whose career needs a jumpstart. Armed with his camera, Boyle joins the front lines in an attempt to capture atrocious-but-valuable images of pain and horror. But with each picture he takes, he catches a tragic side of humanity that ignites his long-buried compassion. And he unexpectedly discovers something that will change him forever: his soul.  Also starring Jim Belushi (Thief, Twin Peaks: The Return) and John Savage (The Deer Hunter, The Thin Red Line), Salvador is a searing critique of the United States role in the Central American crisis, and The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present the film in its UK debut on Blu-ray in a special Dual Format edition. The Virgin Spring – The Criterion Collection (Blu-ray Review)

As much a fan I may be of legendary director Ingmar Bergman, I’ve never actually written at length about one of his films. Thanks to this re-release of his Oscar-winning film, The Virgin Spring, from The Criterion Collection, I now have the chance. Numerous superlatives go with almost any of Bergman films, and this one is no different. In addition to being an odd inspiration for some films that came later on, this was the movie that brought Bergman a lot more international acclaim, having already delivered some of his signature work. All that success and he wasn’t even much of a fan of this entry in his oeuvre. All that and more in this assessment of another great Blu-ray upgrade for a terrific feature.

Review: The Endless

The EndlessJustin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have made a career out of the unexplainable that tugs you into a spiral of anxiety. They have a unique rhythm that take some getting acquainted with, but it has previously paid off quite well. Their breakout film, Resolution, is a descent into insanity, and Spring is a sensuous, peculiar love story. With The Endless, they have perhaps leaned too far into their aesthetic; while it is a significant part of the narrative, it is also it’s detriment. Their desire to discombobulate the viewer has backfired, resulting in a product that could have easily been a segment in an anthology.

Dagon – Collector’s Series (Blu-ray Review)

Vestron Video has made July 2018 sort of their HP Lovecraft month with the previously reviewed Beyond ReAnimator and Dagon. While Dagon gave us some Herbert West and known Lovecraft actor Jeffrey Combs, we get his usual partner in crime, director Stuart Gordon for this aquatic horror film. There had been rumor for a few months that Vestron would be adding this one to the Collector’s Series and fans were pretty excited when it turned out to be true. They’ve come through with a slew of brand new interviews and bonus materials for everyone to dig into as well. You can grab this one, along with Beyond ReAnimator, to keep your Vestron Video Collector’s Series Blu-rays up to date by using the Amazon link below. This one hits shelves (Probably more like virtual shelves) on July 24th! Continue reading ‘Dagon – Collector’s Series (Blu-ray Review)’

‘Skyscraper’ Is A Gravity Defying Blast! (Movie Review)

SkyscraperSkyscraper, which we are gathered here to discuss today, is NOT the rousing Demi Lovato song.  Instead, Skyscraper is the newest Dwayne Johnson action vehicle.  I mean how much lull can we have theatrically speaking without a new Rock movie packing seats in the theaters?  That was of course a very rhetorical question.  The answer to that is simply not much at all.  The Rock is back and this time he’s playing Die Hard in a very tall building occupied by terrorists with a slight “twist.”  He has a twist off lower left leg!  Now you can not say this is the same old kind of movie The Rock is always in or they didn’t give his character a flaw.  If nothing else, Skyscraper is the film that puts The Rock at a slight physical disadvantage, but not too much where can’t make huge, gaping horizontal/vertical leaps or use his artificial stump as an effective prop.  There are limits, people. The Quick And The Dead (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

When Sony announced the 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray release of Sam Raimi’s The Quick and the Dead, I found myself a bit surprised. It just wasn’t a film I’d think would be leaping to the format right away. Its not hitting any sort of notable milestone this year (23 years old) and Sam Raimi doesn’t really have some big new film coming out. Oh well, though. The Western, headlined by Sharon Stone is making its way with a brand new 4K transfer and newly mixed Dolby Atmos track. They are also tossing on some never seen Deleted scenes in the mix, making this a pretty solid 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray release. You’ll be able to pre-order the film from the Amazon link we have provided below. Land yourself a copy of Raimi’s Western when it arrives July 17th. Gravity Falls: The Complete Series (Blu-ray Review)

Gravity Falls ran on both Disney Channel Disney XD (Where Star Wars: Rebels also aired) during its broadcast run from 2012 to 2016. I had always meant to give it a go, but never got around to it…UNTIL NOW! Wanting to start fresh from the beginning and not trying to sift through OnDemand and streams, Shout! Factory is delivering the complete series Blu-ray set on July 24th. Disney and Shout! Factory teaming up? Crazy! This 7-disc set will also come with a host of impressive extras including and almost 2 hour documentary and commentaries on all 40 episodes. Ready Player One (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Ready Player One, based off of the Ernest Cline novel of the same name, became one of the first bigger hits in the Spring of 2018 post-Black Panther. The film took in some nice dough and found a some popularity overseas, raking in almost 600 billion dollars on the worldwide stage. Financially its been one of Steven Spielberg’s biggest in years. Now, its coming from the theater arcade to your home video console. I’m excited for this to be a 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray release, but boy…how fun would it have been to include or sell separately a collector’s Beta or VHS tape of the film. And not in letterbox either, fully cropped as was per usual. Missed opportunity there. Maybe on a rerelease. Anyway, this release is pretty loaded with extras and you can check it all out when it arrives on July 24th. Continue reading ‘Ready Player One (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’
