While various frivolous top ten lists come and go (and according to my previous stomping grounds Starpulse.com are the sole key to site traffic!) there always seems to be a slight disconnect between the writer and the cinematic subjects they are highlighting. Taking into account trends, movies with legacies and selections that stand out, most lists in a sole effort to be Goggled lack personal insight and passion from the scribe to take things to the next level. So in looking over my own work recently as a film critic I wanted to get a little more intimate and thus give anyone interested a detailed walk down movie memory lane Jason Coleman style. So what follows below are ten films that in my life changed the game in terms of what a film could be and my personal stories behind their inclusion. (Listed by year and not importance folks!) These are not merely popular choices nor films that were my only favorites, but flicks that took elements in their various genres and elevated them to a place that some movies only dream of going – in short films that had a profound effect on me. (And remember I grew up in the 80’s hence the small timeline!) Spilling my movie geek guts for all to see, here are my…Top Ten Movie Game Changers!

Braveheart is one of those Top 10 films of mine that I will continue to re-purchase without any thought or hesitation every time its available on a newer/better home media format. First VHS, then DVD to Blu-ray and now I’m bringing this epic war film home on 4K Ultra HD, There’s just so much I love about Braveheart not to mention the fact that I once dated a descendent of William Wallace’s, so she says. To me historic pieces of this kind really don’t get any better than this especially under the love, care and ultimately direction of its main star, Mel Gibson. Say what you want about the man. He may be a drunk and a reckless person in real life, but he’s one hell of a passionate director when it comes to his film projects. In this case though Braveheart is both the icing on the cake and the yummy cake itself. I know it sounds like I’m biased in my words. I am, but there’s just so much ammo to back up my thoughts here with. Let’s revisit the years 1995/96 down below in more detail. Shall we? Continue reading ‘Braveheart (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

From the acclaimed graphic novel comes an epic adventure about a world beyond imagination. Teen Barbara Thorson (Madison Wolfe, The Conjuring 2) is the only thing that stands between terrible giants and the destruction of her small town. But as she boldly confronts her fears in increasingly dangerous ways, her new school counselor (Zoe Saldana, Guardians of the Galaxy) leads her to question everything she’s always believed to be true. I Kill Giants is an intense, touching story about trust, courage and love from the producers that brought you Harry Potter.

Well if I ever wanted to know what it felt like to be stranded on a deserted island, all I had to do was watch Fifty Shades Freed. Why you ask? Because I absolutely loved it!!! I know I am not in the majority here, but I had so much fun with here. I mean who doesn’t want to live vicariously through Anastasia Steele (Grey)? She is getting married to Cristian Grey, a handsome billionaire with “all the right moves” if you know what I mean ;-).

When it comes to the catalog title 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray game, Paramount seems to have a better handle on what to pick early on to upgrade. They seem to either go for something that’s pretty popular to being with in terms of something that always gets picked up no matter the format or they release something prestigious that there’s no question why they would put it out. And often, they do a rock solid job of their new transfers and audio. With Gladiator, they are kind hitting on the best of both options; a super popular film in DVD/Blu-ray found in collections as well as being a Best Picture winner from a very notable director. No new bonus features, but this one has already been loaded with them in the past and they all port over here. You can pre-order to have it ready to put on the shelf for its release on May 15. A few years back, DC broke some barriers and unleashed a brand of their famed comic book heroes aimed strictly toward young women. Great new figures, costumes and a cartoon were launched in the DC Super Hero Girls brand. But, you know how you really know you were successful with it? You not only get LEGOS, but a LEGO cartoon movie edition of your brand. This isn’t the first one of said LEGO’izing the DC Super Hero Girls, but this is I believe the second of such films, coming a year later. This one is called Super-Villain High and returns the likes of voice acting favorite Tara Strong back to put life into the animated Harley Quinn. You’ll be able to snag yourself this one on DVD (Sorry, bummer, but no Blu-ray) when it hits shelves May 15. Continue reading ‘LEGO DC Super Hero Girls: Super-Villain High (DVD Review)’

When collecting and following the releases of Shout! Factory (And the subsequent Shout Select and Scream Factory), its not hard to take notice of some of their favorite filmmakers that they gun to have as many releases as they can for. But, when it comes to actors, it seems they are big fans of Peter Weller. And with good reason, he’s a top notch performer who seems to have always flown just under the radar. Previously they’ve done Robocop 2, Leviathan, Buckaroo Banzai and recently Shakedown to name some. Now comes the George P. Cosmatos film Of Unknown Origin that stars Weller. While not a Collector’s Edition, this one will feature a new transfer and three new interviews. You can add to your own Peter Weller collection by pre-ordering a copy below in time for its release on May 22nd. Continue reading ‘Of Unknown Origin (Blu-ray Review)’

Just as summer is about to hit, let us look back and recognize that Peter Rabbit is currently one of the Top 5 films at the box office for 2018 (Top 10 worldwide). Assuredly, it won’t even be Top 10 by years end if even by the end of summer. But, it managed to be a popular family/kids film to check out where #Justice4Paddington didn’t seem to catch fire no matter how much the raves came in for the sequel. Something stuck though, with it making solid bank through competition like Black Panther, the continued dominance of Jumanji, A Wrinkle In Time and Sherlock Gnomes coming out. You’ll be able catch the film again or for the first when you’re able to own the film on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray on May 1st. You can order a copy using the Amazon link below.
