Better Living Through Chemistry On Blu-ray April 15

UNIVERSAL STUDIOS HOME ENTERTAINMENT BETTER LIVING THROUGH CHEMISTRYThe dark comedy BETTER LIVING THROUGH CHEMISTRY starring Sam Rockwell, Olivia Wilde, Michelle Monaghan, Ray Liotta and two-time Academy Award®-winner Jane Fonda, will be coming to  Blu-ray, DVD, & DIGITAL HD with UltraViolet™ on April 15, 2014 from Universal Studios Home Entertainment.  I honestly no very little about this film, but the cast made me a sucker for wanting to check it out.  Who knows how good it may be, but I like to be optimistic.  The loginline reads as this:  A small-town pharmacist’s uneventful life is turned inside out when he falls for a lonely trophy wife.  That is plenty to hold my interest and hopefully it all works out for the best.  Continue on to learn more about this upcoming release.

HBO Home Entertainment Announces True Detective on Blu-ray

True DetectiveTrue Detective, the critically-acclaimed show starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as two detectives assigned to a grisly and cultish murder case in the Louisiana bayou country, has become the most talked about new TV show of the year…and I have NOT seen it yet (insert unhappy face).  To say I’m looking forward to seeing it is like saying it sure gets hot in the desert.  Speaking of hot…hot off McConaughey’s Academy Award win (Dallas Buyers Club) and the show’s tense and explosive season finale, HBO Home Entertainment has just announced the June 10, 2014 Blu-ray with Digital HD, DVD & Digital Download debut of True Detective.  Just in time for Father’s Day, the sets are packed with exclusive bonus features including interviews with McConaughey and Harrelson, conversations with creator Nic Pizzolatto, director Cary Joji Fukunaga and series composer T Bone Burnett, whose music helped establish the dark and ominous tone of the series, and never-before-seen footage from the series. On April 1st, Get Your Copy Of NORMA Blu-RAE!

Norma RaeSorry about the title, but I saw the door open and went there.  Sally Field’s Academy Award winning performance as a millworking union leader is making the jump to Blu-ray.  Norma Rae was also nominated for several other Academy Awards and took home 2 statues.  This was actually one of the higher profile films that my college screenwriting professor had worked on.  But we’ll get into that more when we hit the review.  I haven’t seen this film in a super long time time (close to maybe 20 years?), so I’m excited to revisit it.    It comes out on April Fool’s Day, so we’ll see if its actually happening.  I kid, I kid.  Though I do wish some distributor would have played a joke this year with New Release Tuesday falling on April Fool’s to get the internet going in a tangent, like “Halloween 6 Producer’s Cut coming April 1!!!” and then it not coming out or something.  Okay, so maybe I’m have a dark sense of humor.  Anyway, read the specs on Norma Rae (No pre-order, but it really is coming out!) below where you can see the horribly photoshopped Sally Field on the cover. Also, how weird is it that they tell you there’s an Easter Egg on the disc already?   Continue reading ‘On April 1st, Get Your Copy Of NORMA Blu-RAE!’

‘The Raid 2’ Puts Rama Back In Crazy Action (Movie Review)

the-raid-2-poster whysobluWhen The Raid: Redemption hit theaters in America back in 2011, I was ecstatic over what it gave me.  Having looked forward to it for months, I felt like I was rewarded with a film that was one of the more visceral experiences I have ever had in a theater, complete with a great audience to experience it with.  It presented a ton of action, which included various fights, choreography, and filmmaking that I frankly had not seen presented in that manner before.  The story is not all that innovative, but it was immensely satisfying for me as far as what it was trying to do.  It was enough to earn a spot on my top 10 list that year.  Now we have the Raid 2: Berandal, which attempts to extend that visceral experience into something much grander, given the blown out nature of the plot, expansion of characters, and general chaotic feel of the action on display.  The result was another bloody good time at the theater.

Dwayne Johnson Stars As Hercules And Here’s The New Trailer

hercules whysoblu 2Honestly I was not going to post this, but it has been stuck in my mind all day.  The world did not need Kellan Lutz as Hercules, but putting The Rock in as Hercules has my attention.  I am a big fan of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and while I do not go out of my way to praise Brett Ratner, he has more often than not made entertaining films (if he keeps his mouth shut and just directs his films and his actors, his resume is pretty decent).  Now the two have come together to adapt the graphic novels based on the Hercules legend and it looks like a lot of fun.  I may not have cared for the recent Conan film with Jason Momoa, but this Hercules film looks to be a more solid step in the fun that can be had with that kind of story.  Also, The Rock looks freaking massive in this role, fitting of the mythological Greek hero.  Continue on to check out the trailer and see some pics and a poster.

Saving Mr. Banks (Blu-ray Review)

Saving-Mr-BanksDisney’s 2013 Oscar hopeful, Saving Mr. Banks has come to Blu-ray.  Boasting stellar performances by Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks, it stunned many when all it got nominated for was Best Original Score (Thomas Newman).  No matter, the film received plenty of other award recognition with some wins and was a rousing success at the box office, raking in over $112 million for just a $35 million budget.  It tells the story of a time during a golden age for the Mouse House, and the struggle with the creative process on developing one of the all time classics, Mary Poppins.   So, take your spoon full of sugar and grab your kite as we take to the sky and  chim chiminy chim chim review this Blu-ray.  What?  I’m in the spirit! The X-Men: Days of Future Past’s Full Trailer And A New Poster Debut

x-men poster-thumbHere is the second trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past.  Given how quiet marketing has been, as far as revealing plot details regarding one of the best story lines in the X-Men comics goes, this new trailer will surely satisfy those on board with the popular mutant franchise, as it has plenty to offer as far as juicy new footage, fitting of an action/superhero blockbuster.  A new poster has been released as well, once again suggesting that (aside from The Wolverine) Fox has no idea how to make a great X-Men movie poster.  This one is not terrible, but it’s still pretty blah.  Take a look for yourself at  both the new trailer and the new poster by continuing on in this post.

American Hustle (DVD Review)

American Hustle - www.whysoblu.comAmerican Hustle, more recently famous for being nominated for a whopping 10 Oscars, and winning none. Is that indicative of it not being a good movie? Absolutely not and we will squash those rumors down with our DVD review. American Hustle stars Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, and Jeremy Renner. It’s the story of the ultimate con and the conmen who weave its magic all using the backdrop of the 1970’s. David O. Russell who also directed The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook in recent years directed American Hustle. 48 Hours with PlayStation 4’s ‘inFAMOUS: Second Son’ (Game Review)

inFAMOUS Second Son TNI’m going to go on record right from the beginning here and admit that this won’t be the most prolific of game reviews covering PlayStation 4’s newly released inFAMOUS: Second Son, but it’s better than having no coverage at all like some sites that profess to having gaming reviews, right?  Such grandeur efforts of game reviews are far better off left for our resident experts like Aaron Neuwirth or Gregg Senko, whom I hope to see back here representing one day soon.  But for now, you’re just going to have to accept this quick review as the authority around here.  And if not for the encouragement of Aaron Neuwirth on how good he believed this game was going to be, I honestly would not be sitting here writing this as I initially had no plans to play this one.  Thankfully, I’m glad Aaron’s plug and affinity over this franchise persuaded me to give it a try. Buck Wild (Blu-ray Review)

Buck-WildMillennium Entertainment is bringing you the Blu-ray release of Buck Wild.  This zombie comedy was actually made all the way back in 2011, but is just now making its way to home video.  It made its big debut at the Dallas International Film Festival last year in April.  It then later took home the “Best Of The Fest” award at the Hill Country Film Festival the following month.  This film melds the genres of zombies and scary redneck hillbillies together in hopes of a great comedic romp.  The film was directed by Tyler Glodt.

THE SPIKE LEE JOINT COLLECTION Coming To Blu-ray!

Spike Lee Joint Collection THUMBThis doesn’t make up for Oldboy, but alas someone is finally digging into Spike Lee’s back catalog of films.  And, funny enough, I now need to write a new piece for next week’s ‘Wishlist’ article as it was going to be for The 25th Hour which now sees a release date of June 10!  It also includes a film I liked back when I saw it (but haven’t seen since the 90s) Summer Of Sam.  Probably the highest profile of this release to many will be He Got Game.  All the films feature a newly recorded commentary track.  Maybe Jungle Fever is down the pipeline sometime soon? Its still not clear whether these will be 2-disc sets or share a disc.  If they’re using BD-50s (which I would be shocked if they weren’t), then its really no big deal.  No pre-order is available yet, but scroll down for the first official announcement and specs! The Taking of ‘Muppets’ 123 (Movie Review)

muppets most wanted whysoblu thumb 1I love Muppets.  2011 gave me a big bowl of smiles in the form of The Muppets; seemingly a return of the classic characters to the big screen in the form of what could have been an emotional farewell to them.  It happened to also be a hysterical (and Oscar-winning) comedy suitable for everyone, but it definitely wanted to deliver on sentiment as well.  Muppets Most Wanted is more “business as usual” as far as Muppets movies go, as it does much less work from an emotional standpoint, with focus placed well into the madcap adventure category this go around.  As a result, the film feels less significant (which it is happy to point out from the outset), but it is still a chance to have a whole lot of fun with the Muppets, which I have no problem doing.
