No Time To Die marks the end of an era…at least for Daniel Craig as James Bond. I’m bittersweet about it because while I know the titular character of 007 James Bond will live on again actor Daniel Craig was my most favorite Bond. I have mad respect for the 007 lore and fandom, but I’ll admit to not being the biggest James Bond fan. 2006’s Casino Royale changed all of that for me. And while the Daniel Craig films have been hit or miss I’m still very sad to call this an end of an era. Anyone that has interest can see how I ranked and scored the rest of the Daniel Craig 007 Bond collection of films in my 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray review of the set HERE. However, for now and the rest of the review, let’s be concise and focus our proverbial spotlight on the December 21st Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Disc release of 007’s No Time To Die. We’re all ready for the end of another crazy year. It’s mind-blowing to me as I get older just how quickly time passes. Things fleet right past me and I just wonder how things went so fast. Even now, I’m kind of blown away that I purchased and watched nearly 100 4K titles this year. This is saying a lot and made for a very interesting choosing style for this year’s 4K top ten. I made a list – funnily enough, I made a long list then broke it down into one comprehensive list. Yes, it took days… but I’m loving the variety and am so excited to share this with you all!

Here we are about to wrap a bow on 2021 and some things have certainly improved from twelve months ago while some of this all feels the same. One aspect which hasn’t changed is the unfaltering delivery of our shows, our films and our comic books to dodge and parry the current norm. We’ve all still managed to find our escapes through these various media, and not only that, but some have gone beyond just good entertainment or solid reads. Some, such as the comic books you’re about to become acquainted with, rose to that tier for one reason or another. We can agree, we can disagree, but we can all be entertained by them.

Released back in June 2021, Werewolves Within is a clever whodunnit adapted from the Ubisoft video game. It rightfully received its share of praise and currently holds the record as the highest-rated video game movie. That’s for good reason, as director Josh Ruben assembled a terrific cast of actors and comedians who were game to dig into the humor and the horror found within. The film was recently released on Blu-ray, and Why So Blu had the chance to speak with Ruben about the ideas and inspirations for this film, casting the right people, having a positive bonding experience on the snowy filming locations, and how to balance the right tone. The Wolf of Wall Street for me needs no introduction. It’s Goodfellas with Leo in it to me. It’s also responsible for Harley Quinn in my life. Well let me rephrase that. Wolf of Wall Street introduced me to the woman who would later go on to embody my beloved Harley Quinn, Margot Robbie. It’s also a fantastic movie to boot! I thought long and hard if I wanted to write my own review or pay homage to the original one written by Kori Kemerer in the previous Blu-ray review (HERE). I opted for the latter. I did so not to be altruistic lazy, but instead I felt Kori hit all the highlights of why I love this film. She’s responsible for me liking it as she attended the original press screening in my place as I was occupied with other work. She raved about it afterwards and took me to see it on Christmas Day that year. So I owe her much respect for her previous efforts in regards to this feature. Therefore, the below film review is all Kori, but like her I too give Wolf of Wall Street a resounding 5 out of 5 doggies. Let’s begin! West Side Story, the second filmed adaptation of the Tony award-winning Broadway musical, is, shockingly, legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg’s first full foray into the world of singing and dancing. Besides a USO number in 1941 and that time Kate Capshaw belted a mostly Mandarin “Anything Goes” in the Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom opener, the Spielberg-verse has been sorely lacking in show-tunes. Finally, two decades into the 21st century, we’re being treated to an outright stunner of a picture featuring songs many know by heart and a story that’s both timeless and timely. Starring Ansel Elgort alongside newcomers Rachel Zelger, Ariana Debose, and Mike Feist. Rita Moreno, who won Best Supporting Actress in the 1961 original, also returns in a different but no less important role. The gang’s all here, so why not feel pretty instead of making with a rumble? Faithful, invigorating, and at the top of the heap when it comes to pure filmmaking, West Side Story is one of the year’s best films.

Spider-Man: No Way Home opens this weekend with the added pressure of possible leaks and spoilers that feel gargantuan even for the MCU. Tom Holland and the rest of the cast have remained tight-lipped over speculation regarding the plot and cast (though apparently, not producer Kevin Feige). Movies, of course, are not just about checking off cameos or plot points. The good ones tend to have characters we root for and stories that keep us invested long after Emperor Palpatine just somehow showed up. What gets any true believer’s Spidey sense tingling are the laughs, thrills, and maybe even a few tears starring our favorite wall-crawler from Queens. So let’s swing into this as only a spider can. As for spoilers, I’ll only discuss what’s been shown in trailers and posters. Cool?

Upon hearing the announcement of The Criterion Collection’s first set of 4K UHD Blu-ray releases, I was excited by all that was being offered (Citizen Kane! Menace II Society II), but I was most interested in seeing The Red Shoes in 4K. Looking at the list of archival releases put out in 4K in this year alone, I had little doubt that Criterion’s 4K presentation of the classic Powell and Pressburger drama would be the technicolor feast I had hoped for. I was not wrong. Without putting down the other recent 4K releases from Criterion (the ones I’ve seen are pretty great), The Red Shoes looks stunning. It also happens to be a spectacular feature, with sequences representing some of the best that cinema offers.
