Doctor Who: Series Six Part 1 (Blu-ray Review)

Doctor Who: Series 6, Part 1 is the first half of  the second season from award winning lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat (Sherlock, Coupling) and starring BAFTA nominee Matt Smith as the Doctor, premiered on April 23 on BBC AMERICA.  The new season includes a two-part premiere set in the U.S. and an episode penned by long-time Doctor Who fan and award-winning writer Neil Gaiman (Coraline, Neverwhere, The Sandman).  The season opener also marked the first time Doctor Who has filmed on American soil for a story that will have a major impact on the Doctor Who universe.   As Steven Moffat has said: “As ever, in this show, the stories all stand alone, and every episode is a perfect jumping-on point for a new viewer. But at the same time the over-arching plot will be a bigger player this year. More than hints and whispers – we’re barely ten minutes into episode one before our heroes face a dilemma that they’ll be staring at months from now. And there will be no easy answers.” Continue reading ‘Doctor Who: Series Six Part 1 (Blu-ray Review)’

Subspecies (Blu-ray Review)

Ah, it’s been a long time coming with our next review.  Fresh off  our trip to Comic-Con 2011 in San Diego, California, one of my real purposes of going was to snag me a copy of the Full Moon Entertainment production of Subspecies featuring one of my favorite vampire incarnations of all time: Radu.  It had to be mine.  This Blu-ray release marks the 20th anniversary of Subspecies and the first time (I believe) on DVD and Blu-ray in general.  Full Moon Entertainment was in the business of producing direct-to-video features shot in Romania, Bucharest, and parts of Eastern Europe.  This always lent a bit of weight in their productions due to the filming locations used.  Having not seen the original Subspecies film since my early VHS days back in the early 90’s, how will it stack up against today’s more modern counterparts?  Read and see.  Continue reading ‘Subspecies (Blu-ray Review)’

SDCC 2011: Sony: The Amazing Spider-Man, Total Recall, 30 Minutes or Less, and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance

Among the biggest things at San Diego Comic Con this year, people were heavily anticipating panels for Spielberg and The Adventures of Tintin, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and of course Twilight.  Another widely anticipated event would be the reveal of new footage from the upcoming Spider-Man film.  During the Sony Pictures panel on Friday in Hall H, fans were treated not only to the new adventures of everyone’s favorite web head, but an entire two and a half hour block worth of panels to promote not only Spider-Man, but also Total Recall, 30 Minutes or Less, and the surprisingly promising Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.  This really was a packed panel, which did its best to provide plenty of buzz worthy news about each upcoming film. Comic-Con 2011: Twilight

Hey all you TwiHearts, I had the pleasure of covering the Breaking Dawn Part 1 panel in Hall H at Comic Con on Thursday morning!  People had been in line since Sunday, talk about dedication.  I decided I better secure a place too, so I settled in about 7 pm the night before.  There were already hundreds of people ahead of me, Moms, Dads, people of all ages.  The Twilight series has touched the hearts of so many people, not just teenage girls.  The dedication and devotion of these fans is just so over whelming.  Continue reading ‘Comic-Con 2011: Twilight’

See A Bunch of Stars Fall In ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love’

With several weeks’ worth of action films out of the way, it is now time to step back into the realm of romantic entanglements involving a lot of attractive people dealing with the complications of maintaining relationships.  Crazy, Stupid, Love benefits from having a lot of very good actors dealing with mostly solid material, while bringing forward the qualities that make these people likable to begin with.  It is unfortunate that the movie does not pull its weight all the way to the end, sacrificing its knowing sense of irony in favor of a more clichéd and sitcom-like finale.  Regardless, audiences can still be treated to watching an endearing cast wade through familiar, yet fun material, as they act a little crazy and a little stupid for the sake of love. Peep World (Blu-ray Review)

I’ve recently become addicted to the TV show Dexter, and I requested a copy of Peep World on the basis that it stars the man who plays Dexter, Michael C. Hall.  When the Blu-ray arrived, I study the outside of the box to see that Michael C. Hall is not the first or only name listed.  Right away, I’m thinking that either this is an ensemble piece or I am about to be disappointed since indie films aren’t really my thing.  I take comfort that the movie stars Rainn Wilson from The Office, Ron Rifkin from Alias and Lesley Ann Warren from Clue.  The movie is about a young novelist who hits it big with his latest book, but when his siblings see their horrible selves reflected in his characters, they threaten to throw the book at him, and worse. This is the story of what happens when awful people get together for a nice family celebration.

SDCC 2011: DreamWorks: Fright Night

It is funny how two Hall H panels in a row featured films that have vampires in the lead roles, during a sunny Friday afternoon at San Diego Comic Con.  Following the Screen Gems panel that featured Attack the Block and Underworld Awakening, next up was DreamWorks presentation of Fright Night, a remake of the 1985 horror/comedy/cult classic.  For an hour long panel that was not about to bring people to ecstatic levels like the Tintin panel earlier in the day, a commendable job was done thanks to the presence of the cast/crew (namely Colin Farrell), multiple clips from the film, and a cool and appropriate choice for the panel moderator. Source Code (Blu-ray Review)

Source Code stars Jake Gyllenhaal who is one of my favorite actors, and whose name I am unable to spell correctly.  I can never remember how many l’s and a’s there are and my goal for this review is to spell it correctly throughout.  Up until recently I thought that Gyllenhaal was about 20 years old and that made me a dirty old woman for having a crush on him.  I’m pleased to have found out that he is actually 30 years old and that’s not so bad since I am a mere 33 years old myself.  Source Code marks the second effort from director Duncan Jones who previously directed the well-regarded Moon. Comic-Con 2011: Interview with CHILLERAMA’s Adam Rifkin & Tim Sullivan

In addition to my interview with Adam Green this past Friday at the Gas Lamp Cinemas in San Diego, I also got the chance to sit down and candidly speak with Chillerama directors Adam Rifkin and Tim Sullivan.  Never having met these two gents before, I was optimistic that our conversation would be both fruitful and exciting.  And thankfully, both results and more were yielded.  I know I say this constantly about Mr. Green, but these two gents, Rifkin and Sullivan, are some of the nicest people you will ever meet in Hollywood.  You know how when you meet someone for the first time you reserve judgment for a few minutes until you get to know them?  First impressions, whether it be body language or whatnot, are really important and can make or break the interview experience.  Well I kid you not, these two had me from hello. Comic-Con 2011: Interview with CHILLERAMA’s Adam Green

Whenever I get the chance to talk to writer/director Adam Green, I jump at the opportunity to do so.  I drop everything I’m doing and I seize the moment.  Because for me, talking with Adam Green is more valuable than any education in film that you will ever receive.  All one has to do is watch the behind the scenes extras or listen to the commentaries on Hatchet, Hatchet 2 or Frozen to completely understand where I’m coming from.  Simply put, you will never find a nicer person in Hollywood who is willing to not only pay attention to you, but also give you priceless advice.  And I encourage you that whenever Adam speaks, you listen carefully and take precise notes because this man is a walking book of knowledge to all us aspiring filmmakers. Comic-Con 2011: CHILLERAMA

Chillerama is an upcoming direct-to-video comedy/horror anthology film consisting of four stories that take place at a dusk ’till dawn monster movie marathon in an old school drive-in in California.  Considering Adam Green is involved, would you really expect anything less than “old school?”  Come on!  But more importantly, Chillerama was premiered to us live at Comic-Con 2011 and I couldn’t be happier about it. Each story (or segment) is a homage to a different style and a different genre.  So aren’t you curious to know what each story is about?  You’re lucky I like you guys so much!  Come on…let’s further dissect Chillerama. SDCC 2011: Screen Gems: Underworld Awakening and Attack the Block

Mid-afternoon in Hall H on Friday at San Diego Comic Con was an interesting place to be when it came time for the Screen Gems panel.  As the studio had two films to plug, one being the fourth in a successful franchise that I have no real interest in and the other being a future cult classic in the making, which has little mainstream attention thus far.  Suffice it to say that this panel seemed like it would have very clear ups and downs for me; however, I came away moderately interested in Underworld Awakening and continuing to hope that Attack the Block becomes at least a mild success as far as limited release genre films are concerned.  It also helps that the presence of director Edgar Wright can make any panel incredibly enjoyable. Comic-Con 2011: A Talk with Clone Wars Actress/Entrepreneur Ashley Eckstein

I had the good fortune of interviewing Ashley Eckstein during this year’s Comic-Con about her character Ahsoka Tano, who happens to be Anakin Skywalker’s apprentice on Star Wars: The Clone Wars.  During our chat we discussed the show’s future, her character’s not-so-rosy future fate, the franchise’s generational shift, and the business she created called Her Universe which sells cool sci-fi clothes to women.  She’s also married to Major League Baseball player and two-time World Series Champion, David Eckstein, and they generously support a variety of organizations and causes including, Mid-America Transplant Services, Donate Life and The Ronald McDonald House.  Our talk took place at at her booth on the convention floor which was incredibly noisy but I did the best I could to transcribe our loose informal conversation that flowed around customers, the Hulk himself, and the multitude of people.  Ashley was very sweet, friendly, and a pleasure to talk to and who was nice enough to take time away from her booming business to chat with me.
